44 Years Strong: A Look Back at PGT Trucking’s Pennsylvania Journey https://www.pgttrucking.com/44-years-strong-a-look-back-at-pgt-truckings-pennsylvania-journey/ Wed, 11 Jun 2025 19:31:01 +0000 https://www.pgttrucking.com/?p=9919 This year, as we celebrate 44 years of excellence on the road, let's look back at some of the key milestones that have shaped PGT Trucking's journey.

The post 44 Years Strong: A Look Back at PGT Trucking’s Pennsylvania Journey appeared first on PGT Trucking.

]]>

PGT Trucking, Inc. has a rich history rooted in the heart of Pennsylvania. Established in 1981 in Industry, PA, by the then 26-year-old Patrick Gallagher, PGT has grown from a vision into a nationally recognized force among trucking companies in Pennsylvania, and across the U.S. This year, as we celebrate 44 years of excellence on the road, let’s look back at some of the key milestones that have shaped PGT Trucking’s journey.

The Early Years

Pat Gallagher’s commitment to safety — embodied in PGT’s motto, “Safety is Everyone’s Job – All the Time” — set the tone from the beginning, along with a focus on building personal relationships. Through this individual approach, PGT established partnerships that played a pivotal role in the company’s success, including Crucible Steel in Midland, PA, and U.S. Steel in Pittsburgh, PA. PGT’s first driver, Richard Powers, became a long-standing part of the team and helped launch those initial operations.

Another foundational partnership started with our first truck purchase from Jack Hill at O.S. Hill & Co., Inc. International. In 2022, PGT and Hill International celebrated the 2,000-truck milestone, and the partnership continues today. With these relationships, PGT focused on serving Pennsylvania’s industrial backbone from the start.

Growth & Expansion

As PGT grew, so did our operational needs. In 1990, we experienced rapid business expansion that required more space and personnel, sparking our HQ relocation from Industry to Monaca, PA. This extensive campus was a beacon of business growth in the local community of Beaver County.

PGT continued to develop new transportation solutions for customers in PA and across the U.S., even establishing van and tanker divisions to provide additional support for our clients. PGT’s strategic decision to focus on customer relationships was pivotal in solidifying our place among trucking companies in PA and the transportation industry.

Safety at PGT Trucking

PGT Trucking has consistently prioritized safety throughout our history. This commitment goes beyond basic compliance, exemplified by the development of PGT’s first securement manual in 1994. Our unique “one for the family” securement practice requires drivers to add an extra securement device beyond DOT regulations, underscoring this dedication to protecting our customers’ cargo and everyone on the road.

Broadening Reach and Capabilities

PGT Trucking’s journey has been marked by strategic expansions that have broadened our reach and opportunities. Key moves include the establishment of the Laredo Terminal in 1995, which opened a vital gateway for shipping in and out of Mexico. This commitment to cross-border logistics was further solidified with the opening of PGT’s new, state-of-the-art Laredo facility in 2024, significantly enhancing our capabilities for seamless North American trade. The launch of the Lease Purchase Program in 1997 also created new opportunities for drivers, providing truck drivers in PA and across the U.S. with an accessible path for truck ownership. Furthermore, with the founding of Southern Pines Trucking, Inc. in 2002 as a division of PGT, the company offered diversified solutions, initially focusing on nuclear moves before expanding into Heavy Haul and Cryogenic Tanker operations.

Innovation and the Future of Flatbed®

PGT’s commitment to innovation continues to shape the future of the flatbed industry. We actively explore and integrate advancements that enhance efficiency, safety, and service. This forward-thinking approach positions PGT at the forefront of the Future of Flatbed®, embracing new technologies and strategies to adapt to evolving market demands and deliver cutting-edge transportation solutions.

Pennsylvania Pride & Partnerships

PGT’s connection to Pennsylvania extends beyond our founding and headquarters. A unique partnership with the University of Pittsburgh Athletic Department, established in 2006, showcases this local pride. PGT provides a custom-designed truck and trailer to transport the Pitt football team’s equipment, a highly visible example of our commitment to the community. In 2016, we moved our headquarters to the Hopewell Industrial Park in Aliquippa, PA, after supporting the construction of the Shell ethylene cracker plant in Monaca, PA. This strategic relocation, followed by the 2021 opening of an Operations and Training Facility in Blairsville, PA, further establishing PGT Trucking as a premier company in Pennsylvania.

Honoring People & Looking to the Future

PGT Trucking’s success is built on the dedication of our people. Long-time employee Lori Brown, who has been with PGT since the beginning, and drivers like Randy Kelly and Rick Franklin, who have dedicated decades to the company, exemplify this commitment. We also recognize and celebrate driver achievements through our Million Mile, Safe, and Premier Professional Driver programs, demonstrating a deep appreciation for our drivers, the backbone of all trucking companies in PA and across the country.

PGT Trucking recognizes the important contributions of military veterans, with several on staff and among our dedicated drivers. We honor them with special decals on their trucks, showcasing their service. PGT actively invests in our staff, exemplified by the Flatbed Fundamentals course at the Blairsville training facility, ensuring that all employees, including office staff, gain a comprehensive understanding of the physical demands and safety procedures of flatbed trucking.

From our humble beginnings in Industry, PA, to our current position as a leader among trucking companies in Pennsylvania and nationally, PGT Trucking’s 44-year journey is a story of growth, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to our people, our customers, and the communities we serve. As PGT Trucking looks to the future, we remain dedicated to our core values of safety, innovation, and excellence.

Providing jobs in transportation and logistics along the eastern shore

Established in 2015, PGT Baltimore is a primary hub for PGT Trucking’s East Coast operations, providing flatbed transportation services to all points north, south and west. Trucking drives the economy in Maryland, with 1 in every 16 jobs based in transportation, and the Port of Baltimore ranks ninth in total dollar value of international cargo. PGT Baltimore is strategically located near several industrial customers and the port, supporting the city and surrounding area with a commitment to quality and efficiency. Come see diversified transportation and logistics in action at PGT Baltimore.

Centralized Location in Southeast Baltimore

Situated in Southeast Baltimore, PGT’s terminal sits within a 10-mile radius of some of PGT’s largest flatbed customers. This prime location ensures a consistent flow of freight year-round, with over 150 loads hauled in the region daily. PGT Baltimore effectively moves freight in all directions – north to New England, west to Pittsburgh and Chicago, and south to the Carolinas and Atlanta.

One of the key strengths of PGT Baltimore is its proximity to the Port of Baltimore, located just two miles away. This international base provides a steady stream of flatbed freight and revenue for both PGT and its drivers. To navigate the secured maritime facilities effectively, truck drivers in the area must possess a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC card) issued by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration. PGT helps our drivers obtain their credentials, opening doors to advanced career opportunities at PGT.

With easy access to major highways like I-95 and 895, PGT Baltimore plays a pivotal role in supporting America’s supply chain. The terminal is surrounded by numerous manufacturers, allowing PGT drivers to transport a variety of goods, including wallboard, lumber, shingles, rebar, pipes, super sacks, steel coils and more.

Putting Drivers First

In 2023, PGT Baltimore moved to a brand-new facility, reflecting PGT‘s commitment to providing top-notch amenities and features for its drivers, staff and visitors. Spread over four acres, the terminal includes two drop yards and ample on-site parking. Nearby, PGT flatbed truck drivers have convenient access to several truck stops and fueling stations, making it easy to get back on the road quickly. The new facility also houses a dedicated drivers’ lounge, where PGT’s Proud Professionals can relax and engage with their operations team, including the terminal manager and fleet managers.

Maintenance Powered by Penske Truck Leasing

Penske technicians manage the on-site maintenance facility, keeping PGT’s fleet in optimal condition. With quick response times and the capability to address minor tractor repairs, these technicians contribute to the overall efficiency and reliability of PGT’s operations in Baltimore.

With over 100 active drivers and 165 flatbed trailers, PGT Baltimore continues to operate as a major trucking hub in the Mid-Atlantic region. The terminal showcases PGT’s dedication to supporting its customers, drivers, and the local communities in which it operates. The PGT fleet comprises late model tractors, and regional positions are available, making it the perfect time for flatbed truck drivers to join the Proud Professionals at PGT Baltimore.

The post The Power of Partnership with PGT Trucking: Spotlight on GASA Transportation appeared first on PGT Trucking.

]]>

In the world of logistics and flatbed transportation, partnerships are the backbone of innovation and progress. These collaborations have the power to transform the industry, leading to more efficient processes, improved customer service, and wider reach. PGT Trucking’s strategic alliance with GASA Transportation exemplifies the strength of partnership in trucking, offering seamless cross-border flatbed transportation solutions to meet the evolving needs of our customers.

For over two decades, PGT Trucking has been a leading flatbed transportation provider to and from Mexico. With a network of more than 30 terminals across the United States, our Laredo, Texas location was strategically established in 1998 to support our flatbed drivers and customers with cross-border shipping needs.

With a diverse customer base and their ever-changing transportation requirements, PGT recognized an opportunity to expand services beyond the border into Mexico. More than a decade ago, PGT established a partnership with GASA Transportation, a family-owned trucking company founded in 1981. GASA has locations in Monterrey, Nuevo Laredo; San Luis Potosi, Mexico; and Laredo, Texas, making them a natural fit to assist with our cross-border offerings.

GASA Transportation is a multi-sector trucking company with a fleet of over 200 tractors and currently handles the majority of PGT’s Mexican operations. Our partnership with GASA exemplifies collaboration in the transportation industry, combining strengths to create seamless end-to-end logistics solutions. Customers choose us for their international shipments for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Door-to-Door Service: We provide a door-to-door service, ensuring that the flatbed trailer loaded at the place of origin remains the same throughout the journey, eliminating the risks associated with shipment transfers at the border.
  • Bilingual Personnel: Our experienced bilingual representatives facilitate communication, ensuring seamless operations and addressing any challenges that may arise.
  • Warehousing Partnerships: Unforeseen delays by Customs can disrupt shipments. Our warehouse partnerships offer cost-effective storage solutions to minimize delays.
  • Cargo Insurance: Optional cargo insurance within Mexico provides added peace of mind to our customers.
  • Notifications: Real-time satellite tracking and delivery notifications keep customers informed throughout the shipping process, with evening operations personnel available for assistance.
  • Customs Clearance: PGT works directly with freight forwarders to expedite shipments and provide preliminary Customs information, reducing border crossing delays.

Customers of both companies benefit from an expanded range of services. PGT’s flatbed capabilities complement GASA’s strengths, resulting in a comprehensive suite of international transportation solutions. Our partnership has made safety and security paramount. We have shared best practices and provide ongoing driver training to ensure the safe delivery of flatbed loads. Working collaboratively, we share ideas and create synergy, with GASA readily embracing new protocols and regulations, seamlessly integrating them into their operations.

GASA’s expertise in navigating the intricacies of cross-border transportation is invaluable. They possess an in-depth understanding of documentation, customs procedures, and regulations, ensuring that cross-border deliveries are smooth and efficient. The foundation of the PGT-GASA partnership is trust and transparency.

“Customers appreciate how streamlined our process is,” said Sergio Villarreal, Director, Mexico Operations for PGT Trucking. “Over the years, PGT and GASA have learned a lot from one another, and we are committed to continuously developing shipping solutions that exceed our customers’ expectations.”

Beyond enhancing logistics, our partnership with GASA has enriched our cultural exchange. We take pride in what we have achieved together and look forward to many more successful years ahead. Over the years, we have learned from each other, elevating our ability to serve clients even better. This collaboration has significantly increased the volume of loads moved from the U.S. into Mexico, a testament to the power of partnership. Annually, PGT Trucking ships more than 4,000 loads into and out of Mexico. GASA brings a unique perspective to the way we transport international shipments, considering factors that might be overlooked in domestic shipments, with safety and security at the forefront.

The partnership between PGT Trucking and GASA Transportation reflects the ever-evolving nature of the transportation industry. It serves as a shining example of how collaboration can create new opportunities and keep up with the growth of a market. The landscape of international commerce in Mexico is evolving at a remarkable pace, driven by the escalating manufacturing endeavors aimed at sustaining the U.S. supply chain. This projected growth paints a bright and promising future for Mexican manufacturing. As an increasing number of businesses contemplate the advantages of nearshoring their operations, they will naturally seek out the top carriers like PGT Trucking and GASA to facilitate their international freight.

“We’ve been working with PGT for over a decade, and it’s been an incredible journey,” said Ovidio Gonzalez Villarreal, Operations Administrative Assistant for GASA Transportation and Cargo Carriers, LLC. “Their focus on safety, professionalism, and open communication has not only made us better but has set the standard in the industry. Together, we’re achieving remarkable success across borders.”

PGT Trucking’s partnership with GASA Transportation is a testament to how two companies can come together to provide enhanced services, extend their reach, and offer innovative solutions. This partnership benefits not only the companies involved but also the customers who rely on us for their transportation needs.

In today’s fast-paced business world, organizations are constantly seeking ways to streamline their operations, reduce costs, and focus on their core competencies. One increasingly popular strategy for achieving these goals is outsourcing back-office support functions. According to Statista, 66% of American companies employed outsourcing to optimize their operations and attain positive outcomes. By delegating non-core responsibilities to specialized service providers, organizations can redirect their efforts toward core strengths, expedite their expansion, and secure a competitive advantage. It is no different within the trucking industry, where teams manage thousands of service routes annually, handle extensive paperwork for both incoming and outgoing shipments, and accurately process payment information. Among the numerous outsourcing options available, partnering with Hispanic companies like Lean Solutions Group has emerged as a powerful and cost-effective solution.

Lean Solutions Group was founded in 2012 in Colombia, expanding its footprint now to Guatemala, Mexico, and the Philippines with more than 9,000 employees. Lean Solutions Group has been on the INC 5000 fastest growing private companies in America list for four years straight. Their service offerings include back-office support, technology, marketing, sales, customer service and more.

Expertise and Efficiency

Prior to launching Lean Solutions in 2012, the founders of Lean Solutions Group both owned companies in the Transportation and Logistics industry. PGT Trucking recognized their experience and familiarity in this sector, and in 2019, initiated a partnership to assist our Billing and Collections department, providing additional support to our flatbed truck drivers, transportation customers and operational staff. Lean Solutions has a unique understanding of the operational gaps within the transportation and logistics industry, and they have leveraged that knowledge to help PGT with our administrative tasks.

Lean Solutions specializes in a wide range of support functions, including data entry, customer support, payroll processing and more. Their experienced professionals are dedicated to delivering accurate and efficient services, enabling their customers, like PGT Trucking, to focus on their core business activities. By integrating Lean Solutions’ experts into our team, we were able to enhance our accuracy and efficiency, freeing up valuable time and resources for additional initiatives.

Scalability and Flexibility

Outsourcing support departments helps businesses manage fluctuating demands on the fly. Having the flexibility to hire a contractor with specific knowledge or skill sets keeps departments within budget without having to hire a full-time staff expert.

Lean Solutions has been able to successfully adapt to PGT Trucking’s evolving needs. Whether it has been for a short-term project or long-term departmental support, they offer scalability and flexibility that can accommodate our demands.

When PGT Trucking first partnered with Lean Solutions, there were four team members working alongside our in-house Billing and Collections team. In the last four years, our Colombian team has expanded to 16 professionals who support our Brokerage, Load Center, Safety, and Compliance departments, as well as Billing and Collections.

“Working with PGT has been a rewarding experience, as it has helped me grow as a person and as a professional,” said Delma Rodriguez, Lean Solutions Account Manager. “I am grateful to this company, which has placed trust in me to lead PGT Colombia. Getting to know these excellent people and colleagues who have worked alongside me, with the best disposition and commitment to carry out our goals, I have no words to express my gratitude to PGT.”

Delma is one of PGT’s most experienced Billing Specialists, spending nearly four years with PGT. Delma plays a huge role in our team’s success, helping to hire, train and promote PGT’s customer service culture at PGT Colombia. Delma’s contributions ensure that our customers are accurately and timely invoiced for their shipments, and she leads our South American team with a positive and cheerful attitude.

Cultural Affinity and Language Proficiency

One of the standout advantages of outsourcing to Hispanic companies is the cultural affinity and language proficiency they bring to the table. Lean Solutions, for instance, is well-versed in both Spanish and English, enabling seamless communication across different regions. This linguistic proficiency ensures clarity, accuracy, and a deeper understanding of PGT’s business needs.

PGT’s relationship with Lean Solutions is dependent on effective communication and the trust we have built over the years. Our team at Lean Solutions is committed and driven to meet deadlines and exceed goals month after month. Fully integrated into PGT’s corporate staff, the Barranquilla team joins our weekly, company-wide Zoom calls, receives all company communications and takes part in daily departmental meetings.

Colombia’s vibrant culture has given new life to PGT’s Billing and Collections team. The PGT team meets bi-annually with our Lean Solutions team members in Barranquilla, Colombia, to learn new processes, build relationships, and trouble-shoot pain points. Lean Solutions provides a fresh and unique perspective to PGT’s operations, helping us to elevate our service with a cultural flair.

“The last four years has been a valuable and fulfilling journey,” said Priscilla Ibarra, Lean Solutions Group Senior Collection Specialist. “I’ve had the opportunity to watch my colleagues grow personally and professionally, and so have I. I’ve learned and developed skills I didn’t know I had, and I continue to develop a deep understanding of PGT’s processes and culture. And the most important part of this journey has been the friends PGT gave me.”

Cost-Effective Solutions

Cost-effectiveness is often the primary driver behind the outsourcing trend. Hispanic companies like Lean Solutions offer competitive pricing models, providing high-quality services at a fraction of the cost of in-house operations. By partnering with Lean Solutions, PGT has been able to allocate our internal resources more strategically and drive our growth and success in the trucking industry, including:

  • Reduced turnover
  • Access to trained bilingual professionals who have quickly adapted to our industry
  • On-site management team that oversees our employees
  • Ability to scale our services up or down with minimal financial impact

“Our partnership with Lean Solutions Group has been a highlight during my time at PGT,” said Andrew Nichols, PGT Trucking Administration Manager. “It has been an honor and a joy to get to know these men and women. I have had the opportunity to travel to their country, try their food, learn more about their rich culture and the history of the country. Although they often work behind the scenes, our team is hard-working, diligent, and FUN. Their commitment to service our customers and drivers with a smile on their face does not go unnoticed.”

Become a PGT Proud Professional

A core value at PGT Trucking is FAMILY, and while there are over 2,000 miles separating our headquarters in Aliquippa, PA, from Barranquilla, this value still holds true. PGT is proud to employ drivers and staff of diverse backgrounds, and during National Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the cultural influences from the Hispanic community. They have strong roots from Mexico, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Guatemala, Argentina and other Latin American countries. They are truck drivers, billing specialists, recruiters, safety personnel, risk analysts, fleet managers and more. Everyone at PGT is part of the family. Join us!

Flatbed Fundamentals

All PGT employees attend our Flatbed Fundamentals training, a two-day session at our Training Facility in Blairsville, PA. With a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on training, our staff gain basic knowledge about the rules, regulations, and policies of the trucking industry and PGT. Professionals from all departments attend Flatbed Fundamentals, and they even physically secure cargo in our Training Bay, using chains, binders, and other equipment to anchor loads on the trailer deck. These office professionals train right alongside the new class of PGT drivers, helping to build strong relationships within our company.

At PGT, “Safety is Everyone’s Job – All the Time,” and at Flatbed Fundamentals, everyone learns the proper procedures to stay safe on the job.

Providing jobs in transportation and logistics across the Southwest

PGT Trucking opened our first terminal in Laredo, Texas, in 1995, successfully operating in the Southwest for more than 25 years. Providing a regional base for more than 70 flatbed truck drivers, PGT Laredo has a drivers lounge, operations center and full-service maintenance facility powered by Penske Truck Leasing. Our office is located just three miles from the United States-Mexico border and only minutes from I-35, making it a central hub for any international shipments.

Laredo was founded in 1755 and quickly grew to support the increasing trade demands to and from Mexico. In 2023, Laredo was once again named the number one port for international trade in the U.S., with an estimated $24.6 billion in overall

trade going through the city. Laredo sits on the north bank of the Rio Grande River, directly across from Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. With four international bridges, one railway bridge, and a proposed fifth bridge, the city is a bustling center for commerce. Laredo is also known for its rich Hispanic influence.

PGT Laredo is one of our busiest locations, and our Proud Professional flatbed truck drivers are often seen at the terminal performing their pre-trip inspections, going through securement checks, and saying hello to their dedicated operations team.

International Transportation Services

PGT Laredo supports our fleet of B1 truck drivers, skilled professionals who hold B1 visas, allowing them to transport their loads from customer to consignee without switching drivers or equipment at the border. By eliminating this transloading, PGT reduces the risk associated with international shipments, helping us to provide safe and secure service for our customers. Our flatbed truck drivers move around 4,000 cross-border loads annually, making PGT a leader in international transportation services. With our expertise, customers can rely on real-time satellite tracking updates, expedited customs clearance and warehousing partnerships to safely move their freight.

Bilingual Support

Like the city of Laredo, PGT has a culturally rich Hispanic background. PGT Laredo is a fully bilingual terminal, communicating in English and Spanish to support our flatbed truck drivers. We know that effective communication is based on understanding and respect, and all company messages are shared in multiple languages.

PGT Laredo proudly contributes to the local community as well, participating in events throughout the year to raise awareness, develop relationships and support numerous causes.

Diverse Freight Options

PGT’s flatbed truck drivers have a variety of freight to haul, including steel coils and sheets, building structures, graphite electrodes, piping and tubing, concrete slabs, and more. With our centralized location in Laredo, PGT can service our customers across multiple regions in the U.S. PGT Laredo has lanes going in all directions, providing freight transportation to places like Chicago, IL, Pittsburgh, PA, New York City, and Jacksonville, FL.

Growth in Laredo

Laredo has grown 42% since 2000, becoming one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S. International trade continues to prosper, with Laredo recording a 12% year-over-year increase in total commerce. PGT is prepared to grow with the city, purchasing land in 2022 to build a custom logistics center. This new location will include a full-service operations facility, modern driver amenities and a truck maintenance shop. PGT broke ground on the 7.73-acre site in May 2023, which is located within the Pinnacle Industry Center. Our investment in property shows PGT’s commitment to the Laredo community, and we look forward to our long-term success in the area.

Our 7,300 square-foot facility was remodeled in 2021 and is home to several members of PGT’s operational staff. PGT Gary is just 20 miles from downtown Chicago, providing a regional base for more than 50 drivers.

Gary was founded in 1906 by U.S. Steel when they opened Gary Works, the largest steel mill complex in North America, and named after Elbert Gary, the founding chairman of U.S. Steel. The city thrived with steel manufacturing and continues to be influenced by its industrial roots today. Located on the southern shores of Lake Michigan, Gary is part of Indiana Dunes National Park, offering a unique experience full of diverse natural resources for locals and tourists alike. Most notably, Gary is the childhood home of Michael Jackson and the Jackson family.

Our Proud Professionals can always stop by PGT Gary, which offers ample truck parking, a driver’s lounge and modern restroom facilities. Our strong customer relationships also keep our flatbed truck drivers supplied with plenty of freight options. PGT truck drivers can head east to Cleveland, OH, and Pittsburgh, PA, or all points south, including Kentucky, Alabama and Laredo, Texas.

PGT Gary offers a variety of freight, with common commodities like steel coils, bars and sheets, tubing, pipe, wallboard and super sacks.

Specialized Fleet Services

PGT Gary is also home to our dedicated fleet for Esmark Steel, hauling steel products throughout the Chicago area, and our Tri 9 fleet, using tri-axle Conestoga trailers to transport high GVW steel cargoes across Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. These specialized fleets offer PGT truck drivers advanced career opportunities, gaining quality experience to become experts in the flatbed field.

Southern Pines Trucking, an affiliate of PGT Trucking, maintains operational staff at PGT Gary, overseeing more than 15 trucks with specialized equipment to haul oversized, overweight loads. Southern Pines drivers are trusted to provide complex, heavy haul transportation services, moving throughout the lower 48 states and into Canada and Mexico (through Laredo, Texas). Our staff and drivers are well versed with permit regulations in multiple states, coordinating long

haul moves with specialized trailers like steerable dollies, perimeter frame trailers and multi-axle trailers with up to 300,000 pounds of capacity! Occasional intermill and 120-ton ladle work is available as well, making Southern Pines Trucking a vital part of PGT Gary operations.

Maintenance Powered by Penske Truck Leasing

Aliquippa, PAFebruary 1, 2023 – PGT Trucking Inc., a multi-service transportation firm offering flatbed, dedicated, international and specialized services, has secured its first Best Fleets to Drive For® Top 20 recognition from Truckload Carriers Association and CarriersEdge.

Launched in 2008, Best Fleets to Drive For is the only annual program dedicated to uncovering the best workplaces in the North
American trucking industry. This prestigious award recognizes the top for-hire trucking companies that provide outstanding work environments for their professional truck drivers. The overall winners in the large and small fleet categories will be named during the annual TCA convention in March.

“PGT Trucking’s Core Values of People, Stewardship, Integrity, Excellence and Innovation are essential components of our strong culture,” said PGT President Gregg Troian. “For more than 40 years, our CEO Pat Gallagher has advocated that we are in the people business, and that who we are as an organization is so much more than trucking. We invest in our employees at
all levels – they are PGT’s greatest asset – and platforms like Best Fleets to Drive For give us the opportunity to continually review our programs, make improvements and evolve our industry.”

To be considered for the Best Fleets program, companies had to be nominated by one of their professional drivers and undergo a thorough evaluation process consisting of a detailed questionnaire, leadership interviews and driver surveys. Fleets were judged on several categories, including overall compensation, health benefits, safety programs, performance management, professional development, career opportunities and more. This year, over 165 fleets were nominated, with a record-breaking 95 fleets named as finalists.

“This award recognizes PGT’s commitment to provide a safe and rewarding lifestyle for our Proud Professional Drivers,” added Troian. “We will continue to focus on developing innovative programs and utilizing the most advanced technology and equipment to lead the Future of Flatbed®, furthering our objective to enhance the work/life balance for our drivers.”

The post Did You Know? Santa Drives a Flatbed Truck appeared first on PGT Trucking.

‘Twas the week before Christmas, when all through the yard,

No driver was stirring, nor security guard.

The coils were tarped on the flatbeds with care,

In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.

The drivers were parked, all snug in their beds,

Dreams of delivery dancing in their heads.

All equipment was stored, tucked safely in the cab,

Keeping it away from crooks and thieves to grab.

When out in the yard there arose such a clatter,

Our drivers jumped up to see what was the matter.

Climbing out of the truck, they used three points of contact,

Landing safely on ground that was hard and compact.

The moonlight gleamed on the pristine white lacquer,

Surely there could not be any finer looking tractors.

When, what to our drivers’ eyes should appear,

But a truck and trailer pulled by eight reindeer.

The driver climbed down, so lively and quick,

The Proud Professionals knew it must be St. Nick.

He loaded his trailer with a giant red sack,

Safely resting on lumber and three coil racks.

He was dressed in high vis, from his head to his foot,

He looked so professional, no ashes or soot.

A bundle of straps he had flung overhead,

Ready to secure his loaded flatbed.

Edge protectors came first, then his straps and his chains,

Heavy they were but he never complained.

Oh how he tightened each securement device,

Taking his time to not slip on the snow and ice.

His binders, he cranked, making them taut,

Securing his load, just like he ought.

Plus one for the family, he did so include,

Making sure the Head Elf of Safety approved.

His load safe and secure, he checked the reindeer,

A pre-trip inspection and then he was clear.

He climbed in the truck, all ready to go,

With a glance at our drivers, standing below.

He leaned out the window, calling them near,

A grin on his face, smiling from ear to ear,

“Your safety and securement always impress,

That’s why PGT Drivers are the very best.”

And with that quick note, St. Nick drove away,

To make deliveries without further delay.

Our drivers, they heard, as he drove out of sight,

“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

PGT Trucking wishes our proud professionals a happy holiday season!

Building Relationships over the Road: Flatbed Truck Drivers Benefit from a Corporate Chaplain https://www.pgttrucking.com/flatbed-truck-drivers-benefit-from-a-corporate-chaplain/ Thu, 08 Dec 2022 19:02:46 +0000 https://www.pgttrucking.com/?p=8966 PGT Trucking understands the importance of a strong support system and offers the benefit of a Corporate Chaplain to flatbed truck drivers.

America’s truck drivers are out on the road every day, transporting the goods and materials that fill our grocery stores, build our cars and stock our hospitals. These men and women travel across the country, safely navigating through congested highways, busy truck stops and packed delivery sites. They work hard to provide for their families back home, keeping the bills paid, the fridge full and the lights on. Truck drivers are essential to keep our country running, but this job isn’t for everyone. Trucking is a way of life, and drivers need to have a strong support system in order to be successful. PGT Trucking knows the importance of those personal relationships, which is why we provide additional services through our Corporate Chaplain, helping our flatbed truck drivers and office staff persevere through any situation.

A corporate chaplain is a faith-based counselor in the workplace, providing a comforting outlet for truck drivers to manage feelings of stress, grief, crisis, anxiety and more. Our personal lives don’t stop once the work clock starts, and a corporate chaplain can help guide us through the challenges we face during the day. According to the American Institute of Stress, 83% of U.S. workers suffer from work-related stress. The transportation industry is a 24/7 business, and it can be difficult for truck drivers to continue operating at top performance levels, especially when faced with personal struggles at home.

“As PGT’s Chaplain, my role is to raise awareness of our mental and spiritual health, encouraging individuals to improve their relationships,” said Sid Bream, PGT Trucking Corporate Chaplain. “PGT feels like a family because we truly care about each other’s wellbeing. It starts with the challenge of becoming a better person, a better spouse and a better parent.”

A Better You Leads to Strong Relationships

Sid believes that when you work to become a better person, you begin to strengthen the relationships with those around you. For truck drivers who spend their days over the road in a truck cab, they can feel isolated from their loved ones back home and their Operations personnel at the office. Through Sid’s experience as a professional baseball player, he can relate to the struggles that distance may cause and help drivers make stronger connections in their personal and professional lives.

“During my baseball career, I spent a lot of time on the road away from my wife and family,” stated Sid. “I understand how difficult it can be to maintain those relationships when you’re not home, so I try to offer guidance and impart God’s wisdom, helping our drivers work through their problems. You may have to work twice as hard, but you can do it.”

PGT truck drivers primarily contact Sid to discuss concerns about their relationships, whether at home or at the office, but they can also reach out during any potentially difficult times, like the loss of a loved one or a serious medical diagnosis. PGT’s Corporate Chaplain is there to assist our drivers and office staff however they need, even if it seems minor.

“Some people just want to tell their story and be heard,” said Sid. “I actively listen, letting them get it off their chest. If it feels like more than that, I’ll offer some guidance, but it always starts with just listening.”

Benefits of Corporate Chaplaincy

Corporate chaplaincy has traditionally been used by organizations like hospitals, sports teams and the U.S. military, but the service has grown over the past decade, with more public and private companies expanding their employee benefits to include access to a chaplain. PGT has maintained a chaplain service since 2009, adding Sid as our in-house Corporate Chaplain in 2014.

“Corporations are starting to understand that people are hurting and need some guidance, so they are installing chaplains to help,” noted Sid.

Estimates believe that employee usage of chaplains in the workplace are above 50%, and according to Corporate Chaplains of America, companies can benefit from “lower employee turnover, higher reported job satisfaction, greater employee productivity and lower absenteeism rates.” At PGT, the service has aided our recruiting efforts, solidifying our founding principle of building personal relationships.

“I consistently receive feedback from our drivers about how much they value our chaplain service,” stated Michael Opacic, PGT Trucking Driver Recruiter. “Sid meets with the new truck driver class every week, and it has a positive impact on our drivers of faith.”

Comprehensive Support System

PGT’s Corporate Chaplain attends our Driver Training and Orientation in Blairsville, PA, every week to meet with our truck driver candidates. During the meeting, Sid shares his story with the class, motivating our drivers to focus on their families, their relationships and their goals. Every driver receives Sid’s contact information, and they are encouraged to reach out to him whenever they are in need.

Sid also visits PGT’s Headquarters in Aliquippa, PA, maintaining close ties with PGT Operations staff and Senior Leadership. Whenever a Proud Professional is in need, our Corporate Chaplain can work with our staff to find an effective solution, creating a cohesive support unit for the driver.

“Our relationships are the most important thing in our lives,” said Sid. “Whether personally or professionally, we need to have strong connections with each other in order to succeed. Through His messages and wisdom, I believe that we can improve our wellbeing.”

The Resources to Help You Succeed

PGT believes in providing our flatbed truck drivers with the resources they need to be successful over the road. We support our drivers’ personal and professional wellbeing, giving them immediate access to their Fleet Manager, Safety Manager, Training Staff and Corporate Chaplain. PGT helps our Proud Professionals take care of any challenge they may face.

The Season of Giving: How PGT Trucking Supports Our Local Community https://www.pgttrucking.com/how-pgt-trucking-supports-our-local-community/ Fri, 25 Nov 2022 18:44:30 +0000 https://www.pgttrucking.com/?p=8963 PGT Trucking prepares for the holiday season, inspired to spread goodwill throughout our local communities.

The post The Season of Giving: How PGT Trucking Supports Our Local Community appeared first on PGT Trucking.

]]>

Thanksgiving is a time to count our blessings, express our gratitude and help those less fortunate. As PGT prepares for the holidays, we are inspired to spread goodwill throughout our local communities. The charitable season is generally kick-started with Giving Tuesday (the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving) and lasts through December 31. Because the generous spirit of holidays coincides with many fiscal year-ends, the majority of charitable donations are made during the last quarter of the year, with approximately 30% of all annual giving occurring in December.

People can support local causes in a variety of ways, making monetary donations, raising awareness or volunteering their time and services. Approximately 77.9 million people volunteer in the U.S., serving an estimated 5.8 billion hours per year. Volunteerism is also locally-driven. Through a recent survey by Walgreens, 92% of respondents were more likely to contribute to a local charity than a national organization, believing that it will have a bigger impression in the community. By donating to a local group, people are able to see the immediate impact of their generosity and help improve their own neighborhoods.

GUIDED BY STEWARDSHIP

At PGT Trucking, stewardship is one of our core values—a commitment to health, safety, environmental responsibility and our communities. We have strong roots in Western Pennsylvania, remaining headquartered in Beaver County for more than 41 years. We have a passion for our local community, and we support a variety of causes throughout the year, focusing on opportunities to grow and develop our region. PGT’s mission is to be a respected member of the communities we live and work in.

To be a respected member of the communities we live and work in through charitable contributions, volunteering and participation in organizations that benefit community and human beings lives.

LEAD BY EXAMPLE

Corporations alone were responsible for $21.1 billion in charitable contributions last year. When a business supports charitable works, it creates a positive impact in the immediate community, boosts employee morale, and strengthens its relationships.

PGT aims to inspire charitable works throughout our company, donating time, resources and support to local organizations at all our company locations across the U.S. Our drivers, staff and their families are encouraged to join our philanthropic efforts, making similar impacts in their own communities.

TAKE PART IN THE MONTH OF GIVING

Interested in doing more? Here a few ideas to get started:

  1. Host an event of your own – In the office or in the community, you can organize an event to give back. Collections for food, winter clothing and toys are always well-received this time of year.
  2. Volunteer – What non-profits in your area need help this holiday season? Consider spending time at a community soup kitchen or nursing home. Just an hour of your time will be much appreciated, and you can get the whole family involved to spend time together while doing a good deed.
  3. Donate – There are endless charities that need donations, and not just this time of year, but all year long. You can donate your time, money or supplies. Most check-out counters accept donations or offer to “round up” your total, which are easy ways to support causes when you’re out over-the-road.
  4. Touch-a-Truck – Participate in a touch-a-truck fundraiser or similar event, giving the community a chance to see your equipment, learn more about the industry and get together for a great cause.
  5. Transport – Many organizations need a reliable transportation service to haul collected toys, food, emergency supplies and more. Contact a local group in your area to see how you can help.
  6. Yearlong Activities – While the holiday season motivates us to be more giving, charities and nonprofit organizations need our support all year long. Consider setting up a monthly donation or planning volunteer activities each quarter.

PGT TRUCKING CARES

PGT believes in doing more for our employees, drivers and local communities. We will continue to support organizations that are committed to benefiting the greater good, providing the time, dedication and resources to help everyone succeed.

Celebrating Cultural Influences during Hispanic Heritage Month https://www.pgttrucking.com/celebrating-cultural-influences-during-hispanic-heritage-month/ Thu, 13 Oct 2022 13:49:17 +0000 https://www.pgttrucking.com/?p=8911 During National Hispanic Heritage Month, PGT Trucking celebrates the cultural influences from the Hispanic community.

The post Celebrating Cultural Influences during Hispanic Heritage Month appeared first on PGT Trucking.

]]>

PGT Trucking is proud to employ drivers and staff of diverse backgrounds, and during National Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the cultural influences from the Hispanic community. In 2021, Hispanics accounted for 23.6% of the U.S. transportation workforce. At PGT, 20.0% of our corporate employees and 18.0% of our truck driver base are Hispanic. They have strong roots from Mexico, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Guatemala, Argentina and other Latin American countries. They are truck drivers, billing specialists, recruiters, safety personnel, risk analysts, fleet managers and more. They are all a part of PGT, and we are proud to share the following truck drivers’ stories.

Adrian Alvarado speaks with his Fleet Manager, Javier Ramos, at PGT's Laredo Operations Center.

Adrian Alvarado lives in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, and he has been truck driving for 20 years, seven of which were in the United States—four with PGT. Adrian is a foreign national truck driver with a B-1 visa, allowing Adrian to pick up and deliver cargo for international business. Adrian spends a significant amount of time in the U.S., and he believes it’s important to join the right company in order to overcome any culture barriers he may face while on the road.

“It’s been a pleasure to work with PGT,” states Adrian. “PGT’s language support has helped me succeed as an international truck driver. It’s easier to get the job done when I can communicate directly with people at PGT.”

The majority of departments at PGT maintain at least one bilingual representative to better assist our Proud Professionals, including Adrian’s Fleet Manager, Javier Ramos. Javier also speaks Spanish, and the two maintain a close working relationship.

“Javier gets where I’m coming from,” notes Adrian. “He knows my culture, and I can speak comfortably with him since he understands the local slang.”

Adrian appreciates the freedom that trucking provides him. He comes from a long line of truckers, and like his family members before him, Adrian enjoys visiting new places; however, he’s always happy to get back home in Mexico. Family is one of the most important aspects of his Hispanic culture, and Adrian chose to drive internationally to provide more opportunities for his family, noting that there are better benefits and increased job security by going over-the-road.

“I always want to make it home to my family,” says Adrian. “They keep me focused on being safe while driving.”

Another part that Adrian loves about his Mexican heritage is their overall festive nature, and the food is always exceptional. His wife’s roast beef recipe is a particular favorite, and tacos are always appreciated, too, “but only if the tortilla is homemade with fresh corn!” Adrian explains.

Adrian is a proud Hispanic truck driver, and he works hard, doing the best that he possibly can to make PGT and his family proud of him as well.

Roberto Zapata has been a successful international truck driver with PGT Trucking for over 14 years.

Roberto Zapata lives in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, with his wife and three daughters. Roberto has been a truck driver since 2005, and he has been driving with PGT for 14 years. Roberto is also a B-1 driver, and he enjoys the time he gets to drive in the U.S. His favorite places to travel are Midwest states like Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania, which give him a chance to experience different seasons, including winter weather like snow. For Roberto, though, the best part about driving in the U.S. is the overall consideration for safety.

“In the U.S., everyone follows the rules,” Roberto says. “It’s a lot different than driving in Mexico, and I appreciate how the U.S. views and enforces safety.”

He knows there are a lot of variables outside of his control, like the weather and other motorists, so he takes his time to focus on what he can control, like his driving habits and cargo securement. His strongest motivation to stay safe is getting home to his family, and Roberto is grateful for PGT’s safety efforts.

“It’s helpful when PGT communicates with me in Spanish, especially with their safety messages,” states Roberto. “I’m able to understand everything clearly and know exactly what to do.”

Roberto speaks English as well, but it’s easier to comprehend things in his primary language of Spanish. When Roberto travels in the U.S., he tries to stay true to his heritage by speaking a little Spanish along the way. Language plays a major role in Roberto’s identity, but his favorite aspect of his Hispanic culture is the food—especially carne asada. Family is also meaningful, and he loves spending time with his wife and daughters when he’s home.

When he’s on the road, Roberto has a passion for driving, and he’s found support and success at PGT.

“This is a good company,” says Roberto. “I don’t want to drive for anyone else.”

Ramon Garibay, a PGT Trucking Certified PRO Trainer, attends the annual trainer meeting at PGT's Training Facility in Blairsville, PA.

Ramon Garibay is a third-generation American from Laredo, Texas; his grandparents originated from the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Ramon has been driving for 25 years, and he recently joined PGT in April 2021. Truck driving has given Ramon an opportunity to provide for his family, and at PGT, he has been able to run a local lane so that he’s home more often. Ramon enjoys spending more time with his wife and three daughters, but he lovingly admits that they keep him busier than ever!

For Ramon, being Hispanic means he gets to experience the best of both Mexican and American cultures.

“I’m exposed to a variety of things,” says Ramon. “I feel more fulfilled in life by knowing two cultures and languages. I also love the food from both places!”

Ramon believes the greatest aspect of his Hispanic heritage is a hard work ethic, something that was instilled in him at a young age. Everyone has to work hard to support the family, which made truck driving a natural choice for Ramon.

“Truck driving is the way I take care of my family,” states Ramon. “I started driving when I turned 21, and it’s just something that I’ve kept doing.”

Ramon is a PGT Trucking Certified PRO Trainer, tasked with teaching our new Apprentice and B-1 drivers through real world situations on the road. He interacts with our international truck drivers frequently, and it helps them to connect through their shared heritage.

“We have a great environment at our Laredo office,” says Ramon. “We’re all from different backgrounds, but we can communicate effectively.”

Ramon sees the hard work and dedication of our B-1 drivers, including their desire to overcome any cultural differences while in the U.S. He knows that it takes a little extra help to get our international truck drivers started, but once they build some confidence, these trained drivers are able to adapt to any situation, thanks to Ramon’s guidance.

“We’re all proud to be a part of PGT and work hard,” states Ramon.

Drive with PGT Trucking

PGT believes that there is strength in diversity, and we are proud of our drivers and employees from all backgrounds. Interested in joining our team? We offer language support, industry-leading benefits including healthcare and a 401(k) plan, and more! Come drive for the company that celebrates who you are!

Million Mile Driver Spotlight #8 https://www.pgttrucking.com/million-mile-driver-spotlight-8/ Fri, 17 Jun 2022 16:33:00 +0000 https://pgttrucking1.wpengine.com/?p=8565 PGT Trucking introduces our new Million Mile Drivers this year, celebrating their accomplishments in safety!

The post Million Mile Driver Spotlight #8 appeared first on PGT Trucking.

With more than 40 years of experience, PGT Trucking knows that our drivers are the greatest asset to our success. While PGT has always been committed to supporting our Proud Professionals, the rest of the transportation industry didn’t always hold the same beliefs, but that old school ideology is changing. We are enhancing our driver experience and providing a safer, more reliable service through technology advancements and new age thinking. PGT will continue to transform our industry and improve the lifestyle for our drivers.

No one knows more about the industry changes than our final driver spotlight and new Million Mile Driver, William Tucker.

Meet William Tucker
William Tucker has over 27 years of truck driving experience, and he’s been with PGT as a Company Driver for over 12 years (the longest he’s been with any company). Bill knows that things weren’t always easy for truck drivers, and he’s grateful for the “new school” changes in the industry.
“Back in the day, no one cared about drivers as much. You didn’t have cell phones and 24/7 access to your company. You had to wait in a long line for a pay phone, and if you didn’t call them in time, the office was closed for the night,” says Bill. “Now, I have hands-free capability and can get ahold of someone at PGT whenever I need them. The industry has done a great job to become a more professional industry, and it shows.”
Bill also appreciates the new technology in the truck, particularly the AI-powered cameras and electronic logging device. It makes it easier for him to keep track of his driving time throughout the day, and the cameras help to show what really happens on the road, especially if there is an incident. With these new advances, Bill is able to focus on his driving and staying safe, which he has done for over one million miles.
“It’s easy: anticipate. You have to anticipate what’s going to happen, what other people will do,” states Bill. “Focus on what’s ahead, maintain your speed and get out and look at your situation.”
Bill’s advice to his fellow drivers, especially to pure students, is to take their time. He doesn’t get in a hurry and focuses on safety above all else. Bill knows that it’s easier to reschedule a delivery than it is to deal with a violation, load shift or accident.
“Slow down, don’t get in a hurry and take time to learn,” advises Bill.
Bill is also a two-time combat veteran from the 82nd Airborne Division in the U.S. Army. Bill believes that being a flatbed truck driver has some similarities to being in the military, so it was a natural transition for him when he changed careers.
When asked what was easier, jumping out of a plane or driving a truck, Bill joked, “jumping out of a plane, definitely. All I had to do was jump and count.”
For Bill, he plans to keep driving as long as he can. He likes what he does, and he makes good money doing it. When he is at home, Bill enjoys working out, restoring his 1972 Dodge Dart Swinger and working on projects around the house, especially landscaping. When he is on the road, Bill likes to stay informed and listens to news from around the world, and he even hosts his own podcast. Bill hates to be bored, and flatbed trucking provides him a new challenge every day to keep him motivated.
So what does Bill plan to do next?
“Keep driving and keep supporting my family,” says Bill.

PGT Trucking was founded in 1981 with a focus on building lasting relationships and providing quality service, and today, over forty years later, it’s still about the people. PGT is family, and no role at PGT is more important than that of our drivers. Our drivers are treated with respect, and we give them customized support to meet each driver’s individual needs. You’re not just at a number in a truck – you’re a human being and a valued member of our team.
“Our greatest strength at PGT is our commitment to take care of the people who work here, take care of our customers and take care of our drivers,” says Gregg Troian, PGT Trucking President.
For our drivers, the majority of their time is spent over the road alone, so every personal relationship matters. It’s important to stay in touch with friends and family, but with the right company, like PGT, drivers can build additional relationships. PGT values the personal connection with our drivers, and in turn, our drivers feel the support from their team in the office.
As our owner, Pat Gallagher, states, “A driver wants to come work for PGT because PGT cares.”
Our drivers are never truly alone, and one of the most important dynamics at PGT is between a driver and his/her Fleet Manager. We match our drivers and Fleet Managers with the intent of finding the best combination of personalities, planned workloads and operating styles. When you have the right relationship, drivers and Fleet Managers help each other grow and prosper.
At PGT, one of our top driver/manager combinations is in our Wallboard Division. Ross Tindall started driving for PGT in 2011 as a Company Driver, and after 10 years, Ross has joined an elite group of drivers at PGT – our Million Mile Drivers! Ross is also a Certified PRO Trainer. Ross’ Fleet Manager, Frank Taormina, has been with PGT since 2002, and they have worked together for most of Ross’ tenure at PGT. Ross and Frank are a prime example of PGT’s commitment to personal relationships.

Meet Ross Tindall
Frank states that Ross “has always been one of the best drivers on my board.” Ross is an ultimate professional who is always on time, works hard and helps PGT be successful. Other drivers appreciate Ross’ willingness to help, whether it’s securing/tarping a load, adjusting his route or keeping up a “can do” attitude. It’s not easy to safely drive over a million miles without a preventable accident, but Ross’ professionalism and dedication to the job keep him driving at such an elite level.
For Ross, driving a million miles is all about having self-confidence. You need to believe in yourself and have the wherewithal to get the job done.
“The secret,” Ross says, “is that you have to be one with the truck.”
Of course, the job isn’t without challenges. One of the most difficult tasks Ross has faced is driving through New York City, trying to navigate a 48’ loaded trailer with heavy traffic, tight corners and a constant flow of pedestrians. For new drivers, Ross acknowledges that there will be tough times ahead, but the important thing is to hang in there and keep learning.
“Don’t give up,” advises Ross.
Despite the challenges, Ross knows there are a lot of benefits to flatbed truck driving. By staying on top of his schedule, Ross has been able to keep running, make good money and have flexibility with his hours when needed. Ross credits a large part of his success to his Fleet Manager, Frank. According to Ross, Frank learned how Ross liked to operate and formulated a customized plan to keep Ross running based on his preferences. Frank treats Ross like a professional and is always respectful. If there are ever any issues, Ross knows that he can contact Frank and the PGT team, and Ross trusts that the issue will be resolved in a timely and professional manner. Of course, Frank says the same things about Ross.
“Ross is a player I want on my team, always,” states Frank.
Ross values the relationships he has with the other professionals at PGT, and he appreciates our family-oriented approach. For Ross, he knows how important it is to have the support of his Fleet Manager, his Safety/Risk teams and the entire staff at PGT. Together, we can achieve our goals to be safe, efficient and profitable for our drivers, employees and customers. We’re more than a trucking company – we’re family.
“I love this company,” says Ross. “There will be many, many safe years to come with PGT.”
Congratulations on a million safe miles, Ross, and we will continue to support you on your next goal, driving 10 million safe miles with PGT!

ALIQUIPPA, PA & NEW YORK CITY, NY, June 10, 2022 — PGT Trucking, Inc., a multi-service transportation firm offering flatbed, dedicated, international and specialized services, announced a new partnership today with WeatherOptics, a leading weather intelligence platform, to provide improved estimated times of arrival and road risk information to truck drivers.
WeatherOptics boils weather impact down to a simple risk score or delay time that allows businesses to easily understand how upcoming weather will affect their key operations. The company works with some of the largest shippers and supply chain software companies in North America to help predict and mitigate things like trucking delays, warehouse disruptions, and changes in consumer demand.
PGT is leading the transportation industry through their Future of Flatbed SM program, growing innovatively through strategic partnerships and technology implementation. These forward-thinking initiatives create a better future for their drivers, employees, customers and planet.
The new partnership will allow PGT to access granular weather insights through the new WeatherOptics Insight Portal, designed specifically for freight and supply chain. In an effort to improve on-time deliveries and driver safety, PGT will leverage the Impact Risk Scores for customer dense locations and key warehouse facilities, as well as RightRoute for route-based insights that include weather-adjusted ETAs and road danger forecasts.
“The WeatherOptics Insight Portal is designed for trucking companies to easily upload their planned routes and receive simple yet powerful weather insights that remove guesswork and improve transportation efficiency,” said WeatherOptics CEO and Co-founder Scott Pecoriello. “We’re excited that PGT is seeing the value our portal was intended to bring to customers in this space.”
“Through WeatherOptics, PGT will be a more efficient and safer carrier for our drivers and our customers,” said Chad Marsilio, PGT Trucking Chief Operating Officer. “We will be able to proactively adjust our routes to avoid weather-related incidents or delays. This partnership makes PGT stand out among other carriers as we continue to lead the industry through the Future of Flatbed.”
This news comes after WeatherOptics announced in May a new partnership with Descartes Macropoint, allowing thousands of freight brokers and 3PLs to access their Impact Risk Scores.

Drivers are the foundation of PGT Trucking. Our drivers are true Proud Professionals, and we treat our drivers with respect. They’re not just a number on a truck; our drivers are valued members of our team and part of the PGT family. We believe in providing our drivers with great pay, more home/family time, late model equipment, respect and ongoing support/training. We give our drivers the tools and resources they need to be successful, and with our commitment to safety, our drivers know they will make it home to their families.
Our Million Mile Drivers, Safe Drivers and Premier Professional Fleet set the standard of excellence at PGT. We’re happy to recognize their achievements at our annual celebration event each May, and we thank all of our drivers for a job well done.
Our next driver spotlight features Company Driver Marcelino Rivera, a Premier Professional and new Million Mile Driver this year.

Meet Marcelino Rivera
Marcelino Rivera started driving for PGT in 2007. He works hard and doesn’t shy away from the difficult jobs. In his spare time, Marcelino enjoys writing novels and reading.
“There isn’t a load that Marcelino will refuse, and there isn’t a place in the U.S. that he won’t go,” says Ricardo Fructuoso, Marcelino’s Fleet Manager. “Marcelino is dedicated to succeeding at PGT.”
According to Marcelino, the secret to his success is to take his time and do things the right way from the start without rushing the process.
“If you try to hurry up and finish fast, then you are more likely to make a mistake, and you’ll pay for it later down the road,” states Marcelino.
Marcelino knows that mistakes can be very costly to him, to PGT and to our customers. By taking his time and making sure his loads are properly secured, Marcelino is able to limit his risk of a load shift or accident.
When Marcelino first started driving flatbed, commodity securement was a big challenge. If he picked up a new load with a commodity he never secured before, Marcelino needed to take extra time to determine the proper method before starting the securement process. Of course, Marcelino reached out to his Fleet Manager and Safety/Risk teams when he needed help, which led him to value the relationship he has with his support team.
“I feel at home with PGT simply because people call me by name. I have great relationships with most of the staff at the Laredo terminal. I know that I can tell them exactly what’s on my mind and trust that they will listen,” says Marcelino.
Another challenge that Marcelino faced early in his career was to find the customer and shipper locations. GPS wasn’t readily available, so he had to carefully plan his routes and be extremely aware of his surroundings. Now that Marcelino is more experienced and equipped with newer technology, the biggest difficulty he faces is locating reliable parking spots.
After driving for over fifteen years, reaching one million safe miles and being a member of our Premier Professional fleet, Marcelino has a lot to offer PGT and our new drivers.
“If you want to reach the million mile mark, then I recommend that you do what I do: Take your time and don’t rush anything,” advises Marcelino.
Marcelino’s next goal at PGT will be to join our Certified PRO Trainer team so that he can help new drivers based on his flatbed experience.
Our Certified PRO Trainer program was developed to provide our new driver candidates with the necessary skills and training to be successful at PGT. Our Certified PRO Trainers are given additional training and resources, and each year, they meet for a day of professional growth with dedicated sessions from our Safety, Training, Risk and Operations Departments.
Our Certified PRO Trainers are vital to PGT’s operations, growth and continued development. They are safe drivers, mentors and teachers, and they form lasting relationships with our new drivers, which builds a more cohesive fleet of drivers dedicated to the same goals. Our Certified Pro Trainers are held to a high standard, and we are fortunate to have them on our team.
Congratulations to Marcelino on his accomplishments, and we look forward to his continued growth at PGT!
Join Our Team

Are you interested in learning from an experienced driver like Marcelino? Come join our team, where we practice safety each and every day! We will give you the support and resources you need in order to be successful and make it home to your family safely. Our Safety Managers will coach you into being one of the best and safest drivers on the road, and our Certified PRO Trainers will guide any new student driver into being an experience professional.

We use a percentage pay model to pay our drivers, which can pay 50% more than a mileage pay model. With percentage pay, our drivers know how much they’ll be paid before they pick up the load, and they’re paid more when the freight rates are more, which takes advantage of seasonal upswings and time sensitive deliveries. We also offer great benefits including medical, dental and vision insurance (the same plan our CEO uses), holiday and vacation pay, 401(k) match contribution and more.

The award is presented to the Premier Professional Driver who best exemplifies loyalty, professional excellence, a commitment to customer service, and a readiness to share their opinions. Michael Carreon was the first recipient of this award.
PGT also inducted eight new Million Mile Drivers, including Mark Amezcua, Bobby Burlile, Clifford Heaton, Matthew Kroft, David Morrow, Marcelino Rivera, Ross Tindall and William Tucker.
“Once again, our Million Mile and Safe Drivers prove their professionalism and excellent job performance in an extremely difficult environment,” acknowledged Gregg Troian, PGT Trucking President. “This celebration is a way to honor and reward our drivers for their great service.”
Additionally, a special presentation from Hill International Trucks, LLC recognized the 2,000 trucks PGT has purchased from their dealership over the last four decades. The milestone International LoneStar was on display at the event and will be added into PGT’s fleet.
“PGT was founded on the principle of building quality relationships. Jack Hill has been my mentor, friend and business partner for 41 years,” added Gallagher. “We are excited to continue this relationship for many years to come.”

With the current outlook in the trucking industry, there is no better time to join PGT Trucking, especially as an Owner Operator. With freight rates at an all-time high, drivers are making more money than ever before, and the high demand for transportation services means there are plenty of opportunities for drivers to find the right job that meets their needs.
Our Independent Contractors have the flexibility to set their own schedules and get away from the typical 9-5 desk job. By partnering with a reliable carrier like PGT, Owner Operators have access to a strong freight network, customer base and support teams to take their business to the next level. Our next Million Mile Driver spotlight and Independent Contractor, David Morrow, has been in the industry for more than 20 years, and he knows that truck driving is better than it’s ever been.

Meet David Morrow
Ever since he was a teenager, David Morrow has worked long and hard to provide for himself and his family. He’s never shied away from tough jobs, so when David was presented with an opportunity to drive a truck, it was easy for him to say yes. David drove for about 12 years before joining PGT as an Owner Operator, and he’s been a member of our family for over 11 years. This past year, David reached one of our top milestones of driving over a million safe miles. When asked about his secret to success, David only said two words: his mailbox.
Every day, there’s a new bill in the mailbox that needs to be paid, and driving gives David an opportunity to provide for his family and pay those bills. Of course, it’s not all about work – David had fun early in his career and enjoyed seeing different parts of the country. Now that he’s older, David appreciates getting home to his family and having a steady form of income.
David’s advice to new, younger drivers is pretty black and white. “You’re either going to love the job or hate it, so you have to love it,” remarks David. “If you don’t love it, then the job’s not right for you.”
For those drivers who love it, PGT is a great company. David has worked with other trucking companies that ran drivers too hard or didn’t treat drivers with any respect, but at PGT, David has always been happy.
“I’ve never gone a day without a load when I’ve wanted one, I like who I work with and I have good backup support from the main office. You can’t ask for a better trucking job,” says David.
David believes that the trucking industry has greatly improved in the 23 years since he started driving, in part due to the technological advancements and new equipment that’s available. David loves his electronic logging device (ELD) and AI-powered cameras. The ELD makes David be more responsible for his daily production. He knows the clock is ticking on his workable hours, so David plans his stops and breaks accordingly to make the most of his driving time. The forward, rear and side-facing cameras are also a great way to highlight David’s safe driving habits and show what really happens on the road with other motorists.
Truck driving is a solitary profession, and cell phones with hands free communication devices have helped David stay in touch with friends, family and fellow drivers when he’s on the road. David is also a fan of podcasts, and he tries to listen to a variety of channels to stay well-rounded and informed. When he is at home, though, David puts the cell phone down and focuses on the personal interactions.
“I don’t get many opportunities to interact with family face-to-face, so when I’m home or out with friends, I’m one hundred percent invested in that,” notes David.
Of course, cell phones also lead to distracted driving, which is one of the biggest challenges David faces from other motorists during the day. He believes that cell phones, while useful, are the greatest threat to being safe on the road.
“I’m always looking at the left lane to make sure that the other vehicle isn’t about to drift into my lane,” observes David. “From the view up here, I can see when someone is on their phone, which happens a lot.”
Even with the modern changes in the trucking industry, David knows that things need to keep improving in order to provide a better work/life balance for drivers. He’s seen a lot after more than 20 years of driving over the road, and David’s excited for whatever else the future brings to flatbed trucking. Eventually, David plans to retire at PGT as an Owner Operator and spend more time with his family, occasionally getting out to spend time on his boat, but he’s not quite ready for a slower lifestyle just yet.
“I can’t possibly sit still that long,” jokes David.
We’re happy to have David continue his Independent Contractor career at PGT, and we’re proud to be at the forefront of innovation to continue to improve our industry through the Future of FlatbedSM.
Join PGT
PGT has made strategic, innovative partnerships to take advantage of the latest technologies so we can provide a better experience for our drivers. We want our drivers to be safer, to be home more often and to make more money. Enhancing the driver experience will lead to a more efficient and sustainable industry.
Our drivers are the lifeblood of PGT, and we respect the hard work, dedication and sacrifice these men and women do every day. That’s why we offer a competitive compensation for Independent Contractors, with access to incentive programs including discounts on fuel, parts and tires, available health care plans, and more.
When our drivers are successful, PGT is successful. Come join our team of Proud Professionals and take part in the Future of Flatbed.

At PGT Trucking, safety is the driving force behind everything we do. “Safety is Everyone’s Job – All the Time,” and for our drivers, it’s what gets them home to their families each week. We support our drivers by providing them with the resources, tools and knowledge to be safe and reliable flatbed truckers.
Every driver candidate goes through a thorough training and orientation program, and based on their skill level, they may drive with a Certified PRO Trainer before driving by themselves. Even after training, our Safety Managers continually provide coaching to our drivers to improve their overall safety scores. Our drivers have 24/7/365 access to our training team, Fleet Managers and Safety/Risk departments. Whenever a driver has a question about load securement, vehicle safety or equipment, they can contact our team to get the help and answers they need.
We celebrate the safety and success of all our drivers, but a select few have taken safety to the next level. Drivers in our Million Mile and Safe Driver Programs have surpassed our safety goals, including our next driver spotlight, Matthew Kroft.

Meet Matthew Kroft
After years of doing construction in California, Matthew Kroft decided to enter the trucking industry, and in 2010, he packed up his 1989 Chevrolet Blazer and drove to Pennsylvania to complete his PGT orientation as a Company Driver. A million miles later, Matt has experienced a career full of adventure and opportunity. He enjoys seeing different parts of the country (while getting paid for it) and loves that the job is different every day.
Matt believes that trucking is a lifestyle, not just a job, and he knows that flatbed truck driving is an even more specialized role. Thanks to a few years of over the road experience as a van driver, Matt felt it was easier for him to transition to the world of flatbed. He was already comfortable driving a truck, which allowed him to focus on commodity securement and other aspects of flatbed truck driving.
“Trying to learn both driving and flatbedding at the same time would have been difficult,” admits Matt.
For new drivers, Matt encourages them to listen carefully during orientation and to not be afraid to ask questions, even when they’re out on the road. There are always people available to steer them on the right path.
“There are many knowledgeable people at PGT to help you be your best, be safe and be successful,” says Matt. “There’s a lot of good material in orientation about how to be safe and happy while trucking with PGT. Take time to soak it all in.”
Matt knows that safely driving a million miles (and more) isn’t easy, so he focuses on the lessons he learned from his training. He always tries to maintain a “space cushion” in the front, back and both sides of him, and he keeps his view far enough ahead so that he can appropriately adjust his speed based on the situation.
“You have to drive with the idea that others do not see you and anticipate their errors,” explains Matt.
Matt utilizes the five keys of the Smith System, a safe driver training based on precautionary driving measures. At PGT, our trainers are also certified Smith System instructors, and this training is part of our orientation program. Our drivers can’t control the weather or the other motorists around them, but they can anticipate and avoid unsafe situations by following the Smith System.
At PGT, Matt has the support and comradery he needs to be successful in the truck. Matt enjoys connecting with his fellow drivers, whether through group texts, saying hello at truck stops or even getting a friendly wave on the road. Matt also appreciates the communication he has with PGT, not just with his Fleet Manager, but with the corporate office and supporting personnel as well.
“I can call anytime and get someone on the phone to answer my questions or help resolve my problems,” says Matt.
We’re happy to answer Matt’s call, and we will always be here to support Matt and all our drivers. For Matt, hitting the million mile mark is just the beginning.
“My next goal? Another 10 years and another million miles.”
Congratulations, Matt! Here’s to another million!

In 2015, PGT Trucking established the Premier Professional Fleet to honor our most elite drivers. These drivers meet our highest performance and safety standards and always maintain an exemplary record. Drivers in our Premier Professional Fleet receive a new truck with the Premier Professional logo, specialized apparel, a recognition plaque and a new pay package. In order to maintain their Premier Professional status, drivers must uphold superior performance levels in safety, revenue, miles per gallon, idle time and compliance, safety and accountability (CSA) scores at all times. We currently have 25 drivers in our Premier Professional Fleet, and these drivers truly are the best of the best at PGT.
Few drivers have the distinguished honor of driving a million miles safely AND being a Premier Professional, but our next Million Mile Driver spotlight, Clifford Heaton, does!

Meet Clifford Heaton
Clifford Heaton started at PGT Trucking as a Company Driver in January 2010, and his professional goal has always been to provide for his family. Cliff and his wife, Donna, have three children and five grandchildren. As an Air Force veteran, Cliff brings discipline and true professionalism to PGT. Cliff takes pride in his job, his performance and his truck, and he knows that he represents PGT in everything he does.
For Cliff, the biggest challenge of being on the road is missing family functions back home, especially the weeknight soccer games, cheerleading competitions and routine activities like dinner and homework. Cliff has learned to truly focus on the time he does spend at home.
“You’re going to miss some games, so enjoy the ones you do make,” says Cliff. “Make the most of the time you are home.”
Cliff knows there’s a balance to driving his truck and managing his home life, and at PGT, he has never had an issue getting home when needed. If there’s a certain event or emergency, Cliff’s Fleet Manager has “bent over backward” at times to make sure Cliff can get home in time.
Cliff states, “PGT has been 100% accommodating in those situations.”
While Cliff’s goal has always been to provide for his family, Cliff has enjoyed his driving career as well. When he first started driving, he loved seeing new parts of the country, and now that he has a more standard route, Cliff appreciates the repetition and discipline that flatbed provides him. He has no plans to stop now.
“Why change something if you’re good at it?” jokes Cliff.
Cliff knows the challenges to drive a million miles safely, especially while maintaining the high standards of our Premier Professional Fleet. His advice for new drivers is to ask questions, always! Eventually a driver will get a new load, something they’ve never seen before, and it’s better to say something or ask for help rather than risk an accident. Cliff believes that drivers should use everything at their disposal, including their Fleet Manager and Safety/Risk teams, and get a second opinion if needed.
“If you’re not comfortable, stop the process,” says Cliff. “Call your Fleet Manager and get Safety/Risk involved. It’s better to let them handle it and know you’re doing the job right.”
Cliff is proud to reach such an impressive milestone, and he hopes he can hit two million safe miles before retiring someday. Ultimately, Cliff’s goals remains the same: “Continue to make it home to my family and provide for them.”

Thank you to Cliff and all of our Premier Professionals for a job well done!,/div>

Making it home to your family is important, and that’s why PGT is committed to safety. All of our drivers go through a training and orientation program, and once they’re on the road, they have 24/7/365 access to our training and safety teams. We also provide routine coaching to ensure our drivers are safe on the road. At PGT, “Safety is Everyone’s Job – All the Time,” and by focusing on safety, we know that our drivers, employees and fellow motorists will all get home to their families.

At PGT Trucking, we know the value of having good people and good drivers on our team. Our drivers are not just a number on a truck – they’re Proud Professionals who dedicate their lives to keep our economy growing and ensure we have access to the goods we need every day. PGT treats our drivers with respect, and we focus on delivering five core values to our drivers: Pay, Family/Home Time, Equipment, Respect and Support/Training.
Our next Million Mile Driver spotlight is on Mark Amezcua, a veteran driver who proudly represents PGT through one of our top Independent Contractors. For Mark and all of our Owner Operators, we know that in addition to our five core values, they also need independence, opportunity for growth and access to incentive programs. Independent Contractors face unique challenges as owner/operators, but PGT helps our drivers overcome these challenges to be successful. By working with a reputable carrier like PGT, Owner Operators have access to a strong, consistent freight network, a reliable and profitable customer base and unparalleled support, resources and safety programs.
PGT’s Million Mile and Safe Drivers, whether Independent Contractors, Company Drivers or Lease Purchase Drivers, are the safest and most dependable drivers in our fleet, and we’re honored to celebrate their accomplishments at our annual Million Mile and Safe Driver event.

Meet Mark Amezcua
Mark Amezcua started driving with Kitchen Trucking/PGT Trucking in 2009. Mark enjoys sharing his experience and knowledge with others as a road trainer, but he doesn’t claim to know everything. Mark is always asking questions and looking at other drivers’ methods to find ways to improve. So many new drivers are afraid to ask what seems to be a simple or stupid question, but Mark says there are no stupid questions.
“It’s just something that you don’t know yet, so ask,” advises Mark.
Driving a million safe miles isn’t easy, and there are always close calls along the way. According to Mark, one of the biggest challenges of the job is securing each load correctly. Many drivers constantly worry about their load and wonder if it’s loose or if it might shift after a hard brake maneuver. Mark focuses on proper securement from the start so he can worry about his load less and focus on driving more.
“You can never over secure a load,” says Mark. “You need to feel comfortable with what you’re hauling.”
Mark follows DOT and PGT requirements for load securement, but he will add as many extra securement devices as needed until he’s satisfied that the commodity won’t move. Even so, he still completes his trip inspections routinely to double check that nothing has shifted. Mark takes his time to ensure that his truck, trailer and securement devices are in proper working condition so that he and his fellow motorists are safe. By knowing his load is secure, Mark can then focus on safely navigating the other hazards he faces on the road: construction zones, on/off ramps, traffic, other motorists, etc.
Mark is honored to be recognized as a Million Mile Driver, but he simply wants to get through the day safely and take care of others. Mark wishes that other motorists were more aware of their surroundings and more knowledgeable about truck driving in general. Many people don’t even realize when they’re driving in the truck’s blind spot, which can cause challenges for both drivers.
Mark’s advice? “If you can’t see me in my mirrors, then I can’t see you. Just be aware of everything.”
Mark credits his success to taking things one day at a time. When he first started driving, he didn’t even think about reaching a million miles. He just concentrated on making it through the day without incident. One day became two days, two days became a week, a week became a year. Next thing Mark knew, he was at one million miles and counting.
“You can’t look at a full year from the start. It’s a lot of pressure to put on your shoulders. You have to go one day at a time,” says Mark.
Mark appreciates the opportunity to drive and grow with PGT as part of an Independent Contractor fleet. PGT gives Mark the opportunity to be himself, which he self-describes as nice, loud and straight to the point. Mark’s Fleet/Terminal Managers know he will help out in any situation, and more importantly, they know Mark is a true Proud Professional whom they can count on. Mark’s positive attitude and focus on safety make him a standout driver at PGT. In Mark’s spare time, he enjoys kayaking and renovating his house.
When asked about his next goal at PGT, Mark’s response was simple: “Get through the next day.”
We applaud Mark’s dedication to safety, and we’re thrilled to have him on our team of Proud Professionals. Congratulations on a million miles, Mark!
Drive with Us
PGT understands what it takes for an Independent Contractor to be successful like Mark and his team. We value your independence, and with PGT, you’ll have the option of regional runs, no forced dispatch and the ability to be home weekly. We offer Owner Operators competitive pay rates, including 75% of the line haul, and we have a rich and consistent freight base that allows you to control your own schedule and earning potential.

One of the top honors for a truck driver is that of Million Mile and Safe Driver. At PGT Trucking, we recognize these drivers every year during a special celebration event in May. Million Mile Drivers have driven over a million miles without a safety incident, and Safe Drivers have over five years of service and less than a million miles driven without a safety incident. These drivers are the safest in the PGT fleet, and this year, we are proud to welcome eight new drivers to the million mile club! These new drivers will join 43 current Million Mile Drivers at PGT: that’s over 51 million miles (and counting) of safe driving.
Three of our new million mile drivers are affiliated with our Owner Operators, a valued and respected division of our PGT fleet. PGT was founded by Pat Gallagher with one tractor and two employees, so we understand the unique needs of our Independent Contractors to start and grow their business. For more than forty years, PGT has focused on providing quality service and building lasting relationships to foster trust, confidence and retention for our drivers. At PGT, Owner Operators maintain their independence while having the support they need to be successful. We have a dedicated team of professionals who are available 24/7/365 to assist our drivers with load securement, vehicle safety and equipment questions, and our Independent Contractors have competitive pay rates and incentive programs to help build their business.
We know that safely driving a million miles is a remarkable accomplishment, and we’re excited to present our Million Mile Driver Spotlight Series. Follow along as we highlight each of our new Million Mile Drivers and learn how they keep us safe every single day, including our first driver spotlight, Independent Contractor Driver Bobby Burlile.

Meet Bobby Burlile
Bobby Burlile has been driving as an Independent Contractor Driver with PGT for seven years. His Terminal Manager, Mike Rowley, states that Bobby is one of his top drivers. Bobby goes above and beyond his job description, and he’s always willing to lend a helping hand to others. So how does Bobby drive a million miles safely?
To Bobby, there’s not much to it: “Just keep the door shut, and stay at it.”
Bobby’s simple approach to getting the job done is really a practice makes perfect mentality. He hauls mostly steel products, and the repetition helps him master proper securement. For Bobby, the biggest challenge is navigating everyday traffic, which is a constantly changing variable. Bobby controls what he can by properly securing his loads, planning out his trips and following all DOT and PGT regulations so that he can focus on his driving.
As a part of an Owner Operator terminal, Bobby appreciates having so many resources available. Through PGT, Bobby has access to 24/7/365 support, quality equipment and maintenance technicians, and a rich and consistent freight base. Bobby can contact his Fleet Manager, Safety and Risk teams at any time to get assistance with load securement, maintenance needs or general safety questions.
Bobby knows that many young drivers will rush to get the job done, but it’s better to be patient and slow down the process, whether they’re driving, securing a load or filling out paperwork. A slow and steady pace will lead to safe habits and success in flatbed trucking.
Bobby advises, “Just be patient with everything.”
For Bobby, the best part of being a truck driver is the freedom that driving provides him. He can set his own schedule and be out on his own without being stuck in an office all day. Bobby is happy just doing his part and making a living, and he knows that he has plenty of opportunities with PGT to be successful through his Independent Contractor. Bobby plans to drive until he’s ready for retirement, and then this proud grandfather of two wants to spend time with his family and hang out on his boat.
Congratulations to Bobby and all of our Million Mile and Safe Drivers! We look forward to celebrating with you!

PGT Trucking Celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month

Every year, from September 15 to October 15, the U.S. observes National Hispanic Heritage Month to celebrate the history, culture and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. As we wrap up the month, take some time to focus on the Hispanic community and the growing diversity within the trucking industry. We are a nation that was established on multiculturalism and diversity, and these remain core parts of the American ideal.

The trucking industry has seen a massive spike in demand for their services and it is more vital to the U.S. economy than ever before. Since the onset of the pandemic, consumers have made a massive shift away from brick and mortar stores to ecommerce. Total online spending hit $82.5 billion in May 2020, which was a staggering 70% rise over data collected from 2019. It is estimated that ecommerce saw an accelerated growth equivalent to 4 to 6 years under the previous circumstances. At the same time this demand is increasing, as is the demand for professional truck drivers. Trucking is facing shortages of an estimated 60,000 drivers, which many experts fear will quadruple by 2025.

Truck Driving jobs are entering a time of unprecedented opportunity as the demand is increasing and will continue through peak season.

The trucking industry serves some of the leading sectors for Hispanic employment. By 2030, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects Hispanics to account for 1 out of every 5 workers in the labor force, and within the transportation industry where currently Hispanics represent about 14.6% of the U.S. truck drivers.

Diversity and inclusion are essential to PGT’s continued growth in recruiting and retaining the industry’s best drivers. At PGT Trucking, 15% of our employees and 11% of our drivers are Hispanic and this number is on the rise! Our Hispanic Initiative is important to growing cultural awareness across the company. Each Wednesday, Luis Guzman Sr., PGT Recruiter, hosts a Spanish class for PGT employees, both virtually and in-person, to learn how to communicate and comprehend the Spanish language. We proudly offer these fun and educational opportunities to all of our employees!

Additionally, to help celebrate the month, PGT’s Laredo, TX, terminal hosted “Taco Tuesday,” welcoming our drivers and staff to the office for a National Hispanic Heritage Month luncheon. Sergio Villarreal, Manager USA/Mexico Operations, and his team organized this great event for PGT employees.

This year, National Truck Driver Appreciation Week is September 12-18, 2021.

It is more important than ever to show respect for professional truck drivers, who have always played a critical role in our economy. During the COVID-19 pandemic, professional truck drivers stepped up to the plate. They have helped keep the economy moving, despite facing unprecedented obstacles.

  • Truck drivers deliver 10 billion tons of freight every year

  • 70% of all freight moving in the U.S. is by truck

  • 80% of U.S. communities rely 100% on trucking to deliver goods

Every day, 3.6 million professional truck drivers get behind the wheel and head out onto our highways to deliver the clothes we wear, medical supplies, our food, gasoline, and countless other items that keep our society moving forward.

Please take a moment during National Truck Driver Appreciation Week to say thank you and recognize the truck drivers in your community.

Truck driving is a tough job. Drivers don’t always get to go home at the end of the day, with many of them living in their trucks until the job is done. National Truck Driver Appreciation Week gives us the opportunity to show our gratitude for all that these drivers do!

Saying thank you is a simple gesture, but it’s one that means so much.

Thank you, Truck Drivers, for all that you do!

Please accept a grateful “Thank You” from all of us behind the scenes at PGT Trucking; you are truly appreciated.

YOUR GUIDE FOR PERCENTAGE PAY TRUCK DRIVING JOBS

Here at PGT Trucking, we feel strongly that the percentage pay model is the most beneficial way to pay drivers. The majority of PGT Trucking company fleet averages 27% of the line haul revenue!

We pride ourselves on a transparent, fair pay system, and PGT drivers know what their pay will be for each load, every time one is assigned.

Percentage Pay vs Mileage Pay

  • Percentage Pay lets you make MORE money when freight rates are upWith Percentage Pay, drivers make a consistent percentage of the freight cost, and with the overwhelming demand for professional truck drivers, shipping rates are projected to continue to rise. Also, trucking jobs that pay by percentage allow you to take advantage of seasonal upswings in the market, like the holiday season. You will get paid more when your carrier gets paid more. Mileage Pay will pay you the same cents per mile year-round, even when the carrier is charging customers more.
  • With Percentage Pay truck driving jobs, drivers know how much they are getting paid before they pick up the loadWith mileage pay, your truck’s Electronic Logging Device (ELD) will record the actual miles you have driven. But, if the dispatcher has only allowed for you to be paid by the short miles (shortest distance along the necessary route), you may not be paid for the actual, practical miles you drove in order to take the fastest route. When your GPS asks you “Shortest route or Fastest Route,” which do you choose? You don’t want the scenic route, you want the highway! The same applies to flatbed trucking jobs.
  • Percentage Pay has the most potential for income growthFlatbed trucking jobs with Percentage Pay have higher potential for income growth because carriers will be charging customers more each year for the same trips and you will also receive that benefit. With a Mileage Pay job, your cents per mile rate may only increase by one cent or so per year.
  • With Percentage Pay you know you are getting paid fairlyWith Mileage Pay, you know your cents per mile rate and the number of miles you have driven, but will the company give you credit for the full miles or only their “short miles” allowance? If there’s a big difference between your actual miles and the allowed miles, you will not be making as much as you expected!

Trucking jobs with Percentage Pay give you full transparency and you know that your pay is accurate, as long as your company shares with you the rated Bill of Lading.

  • With Percentage Pay you get paid more for valuable loads. With Percentage Pay you will earn more if the truck earns more. If you are involved with a time sensitive delivery, for example, that delivery cost will also be higher. When you are paid by the percentage, if the rates increase then your pay increases.
