44 Years Strong: A Look Back at PGT Trucking’s Pennsylvania Journey https://www.pgttrucking.com/44-years-strong-a-look-back-at-pgt-truckings-pennsylvania-journey/ Wed, 11 Jun 2025 19:31:01 +0000 https://www.pgttrucking.com/?p=9919 This year, as we celebrate 44 years of excellence on the road, let's look back at some of the key milestones that have shaped PGT Trucking's journey.

The post 44 Years Strong: A Look Back at PGT Trucking’s Pennsylvania Journey appeared first on PGT Trucking.

]]>

PGT Trucking, Inc. has a rich history rooted in the heart of Pennsylvania. Established in 1981 in Industry, PA, by the then 26-year-old Patrick Gallagher, PGT has grown from a vision into a nationally recognized force among trucking companies in Pennsylvania, and across the U.S. This year, as we celebrate 44 years of excellence on the road, let’s look back at some of the key milestones that have shaped PGT Trucking’s journey.

The Early Years

Pat Gallagher’s commitment to safety — embodied in PGT’s motto, “Safety is Everyone’s Job – All the Time” — set the tone from the beginning, along with a focus on building personal relationships. Through this individual approach, PGT established partnerships that played a pivotal role in the company’s success, including Crucible Steel in Midland, PA, and U.S. Steel in Pittsburgh, PA. PGT’s first driver, Richard Powers, became a long-standing part of the team and helped launch those initial operations.

Another foundational partnership started with our first truck purchase from Jack Hill at O.S. Hill & Co., Inc. International. In 2022, PGT and Hill International celebrated the 2,000-truck milestone, and the partnership continues today. With these relationships, PGT focused on serving Pennsylvania’s industrial backbone from the start.

Growth & Expansion

As PGT grew, so did our operational needs. In 1990, we experienced rapid business expansion that required more space and personnel, sparking our HQ relocation from Industry to Monaca, PA. This extensive campus was a beacon of business growth in the local community of Beaver County.

PGT continued to develop new transportation solutions for customers in PA and across the U.S., even establishing van and tanker divisions to provide additional support for our clients. PGT’s strategic decision to focus on customer relationships was pivotal in solidifying our place among trucking companies in PA and the transportation industry.

Safety at PGT Trucking

PGT Trucking has consistently prioritized safety throughout our history. This commitment goes beyond basic compliance, exemplified by the development of PGT’s first securement manual in 1994. Our unique “one for the family” securement practice requires drivers to add an extra securement device beyond DOT regulations, underscoring this dedication to protecting our customers’ cargo and everyone on the road.

Broadening Reach and Capabilities

PGT Trucking’s journey has been marked by strategic expansions that have broadened our reach and opportunities. Key moves include the establishment of the Laredo Terminal in 1995, which opened a vital gateway for shipping in and out of Mexico. This commitment to cross-border logistics was further solidified with the opening of PGT’s new, state-of-the-art Laredo facility in 2024, significantly enhancing our capabilities for seamless North American trade. The launch of the Lease Purchase Program in 1997 also created new opportunities for drivers, providing truck drivers in PA and across the U.S. with an accessible path for truck ownership. Furthermore, with the founding of Southern Pines Trucking, Inc. in 2002 as a division of PGT, the company offered diversified solutions, initially focusing on nuclear moves before expanding into Heavy Haul and Cryogenic Tanker operations.

Innovation and the Future of Flatbed®

PGT’s commitment to innovation continues to shape the future of the flatbed industry. We actively explore and integrate advancements that enhance efficiency, safety, and service. This forward-thinking approach positions PGT at the forefront of the Future of Flatbed®, embracing new technologies and strategies to adapt to evolving market demands and deliver cutting-edge transportation solutions.

Pennsylvania Pride & Partnerships

PGT’s connection to Pennsylvania extends beyond our founding and headquarters. A unique partnership with the University of Pittsburgh Athletic Department, established in 2006, showcases this local pride. PGT provides a custom-designed truck and trailer to transport the Pitt football team’s equipment, a highly visible example of our commitment to the community. In 2016, we moved our headquarters to the Hopewell Industrial Park in Aliquippa, PA, after supporting the construction of the Shell ethylene cracker plant in Monaca, PA. This strategic relocation, followed by the 2021 opening of an Operations and Training Facility in Blairsville, PA, further establishing PGT Trucking as a premier company in Pennsylvania.

Honoring People & Looking to the Future

PGT Trucking’s success is built on the dedication of our people. Long-time employee Lori Brown, who has been with PGT since the beginning, and drivers like Randy Kelly and Rick Franklin, who have dedicated decades to the company, exemplify this commitment. We also recognize and celebrate driver achievements through our Million Mile, Safe, and Premier Professional Driver programs, demonstrating a deep appreciation for our drivers, the backbone of all trucking companies in PA and across the country.

PGT Trucking recognizes the important contributions of military veterans, with several on staff and among our dedicated drivers. We honor them with special decals on their trucks, showcasing their service. PGT actively invests in our staff, exemplified by the Flatbed Fundamentals course at the Blairsville training facility, ensuring that all employees, including office staff, gain a comprehensive understanding of the physical demands and safety procedures of flatbed trucking.

From our humble beginnings in Industry, PA, to our current position as a leader among trucking companies in Pennsylvania and nationally, PGT Trucking’s 44-year journey is a story of growth, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to our people, our customers, and the communities we serve. As PGT Trucking looks to the future, we remain dedicated to our core values of safety, innovation, and excellence.

The post Owning the Open Road: Three Drivers’ Journeys to Truck Ownership through PGT’s Lease Purchase Program appeared first on PGT Trucking.

]]>

The open road holds the promise of freedom and independence for many truck drivers. For Ray, Howard, and Collin, that promise became a reality through their perseverance and the support they found in PGT Trucking’s Lease Purchase Program. After navigating the challenges of truck ownership, these three drivers have achieved the remarkable feat of paying off their trucks — a testament to the power of determination and the value of a committed partner. Their stories serve as motivation for aspiring owner-operators who dream of taking the wheel of their own business, supported by PGT’s Lease Purchase Program.

We sat down with Ray, Howard, and Collin to reflect on their lease purchase experience and how others can learn from their successes.

Challenges of Lease Purchase

Ray Squires

The biggest challenge was one all three drivers shared: managing the financial obligation to truck repairs and maintenance. As Ray explained, “Trucks break. They’re not perfect machines.” Balancing truck payments with his personal expenses was also a struggle. “You want to pay the repair bill off, but you have to make sure you have enough money to live on and pay your regular bills, too,” Ray said. “Learning to balance your expenses is one of the most important lessons with lease purchase.”

Howard agreed, saying, “Breakdowns were the biggest challenge I faced, but PGT helped when I got stuck in those situations. With their assistance, I was able to stay focused on the big picture and keep working toward my goal.”

According to PGT Lease Purchase Manager, David McKolosky, one of the best advantages with PGT’s Lease Purchase Program is our ability to help lease purchase drivers with truck maintenance. “PGT has own our maintenance shops, which gives us the flexibility to help our lease purchase drivers. We also lease our own equipment, so we can provide the full vehicle history when the driver enters the program.”

PGT’s Support Made the Difference

Howard Sullivan

Despite the difficulties, all three drivers credited PGT’s support for helping them stay on track. When Ray’s first truck faced too many repairs just four months into the lease, PGT quickly provided him with a replacement vehicle. We also worked with Ray to restructure his payments when a major engine repair threatened to derail his progress.

“PGT stood behind me,” Ray said. “They put the expenses on the back end of the loan so I could still afford the payments and keep running.”

Similarly, as Howard faced breakdowns on the road, PGT was there to help. “PGT will get you a hotel room if your truck breaks down out on the road,” said Howard. “Little things like that, which you might not think matter, go a long way for me. If you have to be in a hotel room for three days because your clutch went out in Laredo, and you don’t have a lot of money to spare, they’ll help out with that. Those kinds of things really make a difference.”

Collin received the same support, saying, “The big difference with PGT is the support they give you,” said Collin. “When a breakdown happens and you don’t have enough money saved, PGT will help you get through it financially.”

Advice for Aspiring Owner-Operators

Collin Bivens

Looking back, Ray’s advice to his younger self is to be prepared for the commitment required to succeed as an owner-operator. “Some guys, they don’t understand the full commitment that you have to make for truck ownership,” he said. “They want to own their own truck, but they don’t understand all the responsibilities that come with it.”

Howard adds to this, cautioning aspiring owner-operators to be patient. “If your truck is breaking down, you have to remember that it’s nobody’s fault,” said Howard. “It’s a truck. Things break down, and that’s just part of the job. You have to learn to deal with those kinds of things and stay calm.”

Collin’s biggest piece of advice is to save up before entering the lease purchase program, and to stay busy when you are in it. “Make sure you have money saved up before you enter the program and keep working. Stay busy,” said Collin. “You can’t make money if you aren’t working.”

David, PGT Lease Purchase Manager, echoes Collin’s advice. “You have to stay hungry in a lease purchase program. Many drivers want to enter the program and own their truck, but they aren’t willing to put in the work to be successful. PGT can help you reach that goal, but you have to keep at it.”

The Biggest Accomplishment: Paying Off Their Trucks

Perseverance pays off, and after a few years in PGT’s Lease Purchase Program, Ray, Howard, and Collin have now fully paid off their trucks.

Ray particularly feels a sense of pride and financial freedom, though he knows the work is never truly done. “In a way you do have financial freedom, but you also need to be prepared for cosmetic updates and ongoing maintenance. Being a truck owner means you always have to be responsible with your expenses,” Ray explained.

PGT Lease Purchase Manager, David, is extremely proud of the program’s success and the accomplishments of Ray, Howard, and Collin. “These drivers have worked incredibly hard to become owner-operators. My favorite part of the job is handing a driver their truck title and seeing the excitement on their face when they’ve finally achieved their goal.”

These stories are a testament to the power of determination and the value of a supportive partner like PGT Trucking. Their individual journeys serve as an inspiration for others who dream of owning their own truck and taking control of their professional future.

Are You Ready for Truck Ownership?

PGT is proud of our lease purchase program, helping truck drivers achieve their independence and grow their business since 1997. Whether you dream of owning a full fleet or just your truck, PGT will support your goals. We have late model equipment available, and for the first four weeks, tractor payments are deferred and free trailer rental is included to help you get started. Lease Purchase Operators earn 75% of line haul revenue and 100% of fuel surcharges. Apply today!

Based just outside Pittsburgh, PA, PGT Trucking has more than 43 years’ experience in steel transportation. We are committed to providing safe and efficient flatbed shipping solutions, and when it comes to steel products, PGT has the knowledge, experience and dedication to successfully transport your product. We will guide you through the entire process, from onboarding through delivery. Find out what makes PGT the preferred flatbed carrier for steel transportation.

The Steel Transportation Process with PGT Trucking

Inquiry: Call PGT and work with one of our experienced Business Development Managers to discuss your shipment needs. We will develop a customized shipping solution for your operation.

Onboarding: Your dedicated account team will ensure everything is ready to go for our first shipment, including confirming the billing information, safety needs, and loading details of your product. By outlining your required shipment timeline and commodity specifications, our team will clearly identify how we can safely and efficiently transport your freight.

Preparation and Planning: As we prepare to pick up and deliver your steel products, your PGT account team will provide key details for the first shipment and assign a PGT Proud Professional driver to the load. You should have your facilities prepped for our arrival, which will help expedite the shipment. We will handle the rest and can provide on-site safety management to ensure a smooth loading and unloading process.

Tracking Your Shipment: From pickup through delivery, our team will keep you informed on the load progression. Our innovative technology tracks your shipment and allows us to provide real-time updates along the way.

Successful Delivery: Just like the pickup, our team will oversee the safe delivery of your steel freight. Your Business Development Manager will be in touch to confirm delivery and ensure your complete satisfaction with the steel shipment.

Best Practices for Steel Transportation

Driver Training: Successfully transporting steel commodities starts with the best training for flatbed truck drivers. At PGT, all drivers attend our Training & Orientation program at our Blairsville terminal, where they undergo thorough instruction and evaluation for flatbed trucking. No matter the steel commodity, PGT’s Proud Professional drivers are well-versed in proper load securement.

Equipment: PGT uses modern flatbed equipment to increase uptime and minimize the risk of service failure. All company trucks are less than three years old, and our flatbed trailers are routinely upgraded. Preventative maintenance is performed every 10,000 miles.

Rigorous Safety Protocols: With safety as our mission, PGT goes beyond DOT securement regulations, requiring at least one additional securement device. PGT’s Safety Department uses a hands-on approach by checking load securement photos and completing spot checks at key locations. For complex commodities and new customers, our team will also be on-site to safely oversee the loading and securement process.

Common Steel Transportation Challenges

Weight Distribution: Placing your commodity correctly on the flatbed trailer can be a common challenge in steel transportation. With strategic planning and advanced equipment, PGT overcomes any difficulty with weight distribution and loading efficiency.

Regulatory Compliance: Interstate transportation is subject to multiple regulations at the state and federal levels. PGT remains informed of the latest requirements and ensures our flatbed truck drivers are prepared for inspections by the Department of Transportation.

Oversized/Overweight: Some commodities exceed the requirements for a standard flatbed trailer. At PGT, we have a variety of specialized trailers and an in-house permit department to safely transport any oversized or overweight product.

Steel Transportation Solutions You Can Trust

PGT has been an integral partner to the steel industry since our establishment in 1981. No matter the commodity, PGT will expertly transport your steel products safely and efficiently. We will provide a customized shipping solution to meet your transportation and safety needs, and our fleet of Proud Professional flatbed truck drivers are dedicated individuals trained to haul steel based on our extensive securement protocols.

In the vast landscape of flatbed trucking logistics, where every mile counts and every delivery is a promise, the role of a Fleet Manager stands at the crossroads of efficiency and reliability. At PGT Trucking, the Fleet Manager is the liaison between our corporate office, our Proud Professional drivers, and our clients. But what are their daily tasks? And what qualities make them excel?

What Does a Fleet Manager Do?

Whether in the office, visiting a company terminal, or meeting with drivers, the day of a PGT Fleet Manager starts with a meticulous check of reports. From there it’s check-in — following up on calls and emails and coordinating with drivers and customers.

Throughout the day this communication remains a constant, while other tasks may include:

  • Finding loads
  • Matching load difficulty with driver skillset
  • Setting transportation expectations with drivers
  • Ensuring PGT safety and securement standards are met
  • Relaying real-time information to a driver on traffic delays, vehicle breakdowns, project updates, or delivery issues
  • Managing issues as they arise on the driver or client side

Core Responsibilities

One of the core responsibilities of a Fleet Manager in flatbed trucking logistics is the allocation of available loads to drivers, ensuring each driver maximizes their earnings while maintaining efficiency and adherence to safety standards. From seasoned professionals to new drivers transitioning from dry van to flatbed trucking jobs, the Fleet Manager is tasked with preparing and guiding them for success at PGT Trucking in the specialized field of flatbed transport. This involves finding suitable flatbed loads, communicating expectations unique to this niche, and providing necessary support to ensure a seamless integration into the demands of flatbed trucking operations.

Other tasks include:

  • Analyzing available loads to prioritize coverage and to determine which loads will contribute to a driver’s total revenue earned.
  • Securing, organizing, and assigning loads to drivers in a manner designed to maximize efficiency and quality of performance.
  • Providing appropriate routing directions and scheduling instructions for pick-ups and deliveries, as needed.
  • Advising terminals and customer service of scheduling problems (pick-up and delivery).
  • Helping drivers maintain profitable and efficient lanes, thereby avoiding deadhead mileage.
  • Instructing guides, supervising, motivating, and evaluating drivers and driver trainees regarding the daily performance of their assigned duties in a manner consistent with PGT policies and procedures.
  • Making recommendations to management with respect to driver’s performance.
  • Maintaining and reviewing total and per driver shipping revenues earned on a daily basis.
  • Establishing and maintaining productive working relationships across PGT departments and employees, as well as all PGT customers.

Qualities of a Fleet Manager

The role of a Fleet Manager demands a unique blend of qualities, including:

  • Adaptability
    • In the fast-paced and ever-evolving logistics industry, adaptability is paramount. As a Fleet Manager, the ability to navigate through unforeseen challenges, shifting priorities, and industry changes ensures that operations run seamlessly.
  • Communication Skills
    • Effective communication is the key to efficiency. A Fleet Manager must convey instructions clearly to drivers, collaborate with various stakeholders, and provide timely updates. In case of any discrepancies or issues, the Fleet Manager steps in as the problem-solver, bridging the gap between drivers and customers to ensure a swift resolution.
  • Attention to Detail
    • From monitoring vehicle maintenance schedules to overseeing route planning and cargo management, attention to detail is crucial for ensuring compliance, preventing errors, and optimizing operational processes. It is the bedrock upon which reliability and safety are built.
  • Teamwork
    • A Fleet Manager is at the helm of a collaborative effort that involves drivers, dispatchers, maintenance teams, and various other departments. The ability to foster a sense of teamwork and cooperation ensures that everyone works cohesively toward common goals.
  • Ability to Multitask
    • Whether it’s coordinating schedules, addressing unexpected issues, or managing paperwork, the ability to multitask efficiently is essential.
  • Organizational Skills
    • Whether maintaining accurate records or optimizing routes and schedules, a Fleet Manager with strong organizational skills can streamline processes, enhance efficiency, and contribute to the overall success and safety of the operation.
  • Relationship Management
    • A PGT Fleet Manager excels at building strong relationships with drivers and customers, fostering trust, loyalty, and mutual growth.

Being a Fleet Manager at PGT Trucking is more than just a job — it’s a career filled with purpose, growth, and challenges. It requires individuals who are not only adept at navigating the intricacies of flatbed trucking logistics but also passionate about ensuring the success and safety of every driver and every delivery. With adaptability, communication, attention to detail, and teamwork as their guidance, Fleet Managers at PGT Trucking are the driving force behind our tagline: Safety Is Everyone’s Job – All The Time.

Pittsburgh, PA, August 2, 2023 – PGT Trucking, Inc., a leader in flatbed transportation, is excited to announce that they are the first in the flatbed industry to provide dedicated transportation services using a Class 8 zero-emissions truck to Steel Dynamics, one of the largest domestic steel producers and metals recyclers in North America.

The initial run took place on August 1, 2023, as PGT Trucking moved material between Steel Dynamics’ Pittsburgh’s galvanizing locations. This daily shuttle service marks a significant step forward in PGT Trucking’s commitment to sustainable and efficient transportation solutions.

“PGT Trucking is extremely proud to have successfully launched our first dedicated run for Steel Dynamics using Nikola’s Class 8 battery-electric vehicle,” said Gregg Troian, PGT Trucking President. “We are committed to providing our customers with innovative and sustainable transportation solutions, and this service offering will lead to a greener future for both the trucking and steel industries.”

Environmental sustainability is a key focus for the two companies, and this partnership allows PGT Trucking to transport Steel Dynamics’ products efficiently while minimizing environmental impact. It is estimated that a short-haul delivery made using this truck will eliminate PGT’s carbon emissions by more than 105,000 pounds annually. To support this partnership, Steel Dynamics installed a charging station at their MetalTech location for the battery-electric truck.

“Our entrepreneurial, innovative teams support our decarbonization efforts through identifying and implementing emission reduction projects throughout our organization,” stated Jeff Hansen, Steel Dynamics Vice President Environmental Sustainability. “Working as a team, we will achieve our decarbonization goals.”

PGT Trucking strives to minimize the transportation industry’s ecological footprint, contributing to a cleaner future by adopting fuel-efficient vehicles, exploring alternative energy sources, and implementing sustainable best practices across the organization to reach a 35% reduction in emissions of company-owned equipment by the year 2025.

Today’s workforce is changing. Employees aren’t just looking for a steady job anymore; they want flexible benefits, positive corporate cultures, and advancement opportunities. According to Zippia, 45% of workers would stay longer at a company if that company invested in the employee’s learning and development. PGT Trucking understands that today’s employees are forward-thinking and looking to grow their professional skillsets to advance their careers. That’s why PGT provides professional development opportunities for our staff, fueling the next generation through the Future of Flatbed.

In 2021, over 47 million Americans voluntarily left their jobs, an employment shift now called the Great Resignation. Of these workers, 63% listed no advancement opportunities as a primary reason why they quit. Employees who have a clear career path with learning and development options experience higher productivity, better job satisfaction and greater self-worth. When companies invest in their employees, they build a stronger workforce, developing advanced skills in leadership and management, creative problem solving, and communication. In today’s world, it pays to believe in your people.

PGT’s Future of Flatbed® program is committed to attracting, nurturing, and developing young talent in the trucking industry, bringing fresh perspectives and innovative minds to the company. With multiple opportunities for advancement, employees at PGT are encouraged to build upon their skillsets, participate in industrywide trainings and programs, and contribute to the growth of PGT. Just ask Tyler Damazo, PGT Trucking Director of Operations.

Tyler started at PGT in 2015 through the Pittsburgh Fellows Program, a young leadership development and mentoring curriculum. After completing the Fellows, Tyler was hired as a full-time employee, receiving PGT’s Rookie of the Year Award in 2016. One year later, Tyler was given the opportunity to set up a new terminal location in Houston, Texas, jumpstarting his career path into a management role. Tyler has participated in many professional development opportunities through PGT, including PGT University and LEAD ATA, and he was awarded PGT’s Terminal Manager of the Year Award in 2021. Today, Tyler is PGT’s Director of Operations, overseeing a team of more than 225 employees and truck drivers across the country.

“There are no limits to what you can do at PGT,” states Tyler. “If you’re interested in learning more to further your career, you can do it. I enjoy the entrepreneurial spirit at PGT. It’s on you to grow, but you will be fully supported by PGT Senior Leadership. There are plenty of opportunities to develop as a young professional here.”

Flatbed Fundamentals

Everyone at PGT supports our flatbed truck drivers over the road, which means our corporate staff need to have a basic knowledge of flatbed trucking in order to assist our Proud Professionals. All PGT employees attend our Flatbed Fundamentals training, a two-day session at our Training Facility in Blairsville, PA. With a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on training, our staff gain basic knowledge about the rules, regulations, and policies of the trucking industry and PGT. Professionals from all departments attend Flatbed Fundamentals, and they even physically secure cargo in our Training Bay, using chains, binders, and other equipment to anchor loads on the trailer deck. These office professionals train right alongside the new class of PGT drivers, helping to build strong relationships within our company.

At PGT, “Safety is Everyone’s Job – All the Time,” and at Flatbed Fundamentals, everyone learns the proper procedures to stay safe on the job.

Industry Participation

Professional development opportunities aren’t limited to internal PGT programs – PGT encourages our employees to reach out across the transportation industry, participating in conferences, webinars, podcasts, trade shows, and more. By learning from other industry professionals, our employees can expand their knowledge, develop new skills, and challenge themselves to make an impact. This helps our staff to stay up to date on the latest market trends, new technologies, and industry news while building a strong network of trusted industry representatives.

PGT also supports development programs like LEAD ATA, a dedicated leadership program through the American Trucking Associations. This program is designed to challenge the trucking industry’s best talent, transforming them into the leaders of tomorrow. PGT is proud to have two staff members participate in LEAD ATA, and they have both advanced within the company into upper management roles.

BRANDENBURG, KY, May 25, 2023 – PGT Trucking, Inc., a leader in flatbed transportation, delivered its inaugural shipment of low-greenhouse-gas steel via Nikola’s Class 8 battery-electric vehicle from Nucor’s new Brandenburg, KY, plant to a nearby fabricator, as part of its sustainable shipping solutions program.

To commemorate this first-ever shipment of low GHG intensity steel by a Class 8 zero-emissions truck, the companies welcomed team members, media and local officials to Nucor Brandenburg for a behind-the-scenes look at the sustainable equipment and commodities that are transforming the steel and transportation industries.

“PGT Trucking is proud to partner with companies like Nikola and Nucor who share a common vision and commitment to a greener future,” said Gregg Troian, PGT Trucking President. “We are confident that these relationships will help guide PGT’s Future of Flatbed® initiatives, allowing us to reach our goal of a 35% reduction in emissions of our company-owned equipment by the year 2025.”

Participants heard formal presentations from Troian; Nikola Global Head, FCEV Market Development Jason Roycht; Nucor EVP of Plate & Structural Products Al Behr; and Nucor Steel Brandenburg GM Johnny Jacobs. Attendees were then taken on a guided and interactive tour of the Nikola Class 8 battery-electric semi-truck and charging station.

“For more than five decades, Nucor has been built on the sustainable model of producing steel with a low carbon footprint,” stated Behr. “Even though we are one of the cleanest steelmakers in the world, we know we need to continue to lower our greenhouse gas intensity. This partnership with PGT and Nikola is just one example of the innovative ways Nucor is working to reduce its carbon emissions.”

Nucor has installed charging stations at multiple mills, including Brandenburg, to enable the use of battery electric flatbed trucks. It is estimated that a short haul delivery made using this truck will reduce carbon emissions by 40% and create a 20% savings in energy cost, per trip.

According to a study by the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE), if 50% of the heavy-duty regional haul tractors were replaced with battery electric trucks, the industry could save an estimated 29.4 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent annually.

“Nikola is proud to partner with PGT Trucking to play a role in Nucor’s inaugural shipment of low GHG intensity steel with our Class 8 Tre battery-electric truck,” said Roycht. “This level of teamwork between product manufacturer, transportation provider, and vehicle manufacturer is exactly what it will take to evolve the industry to zero-emission trucking. We look forward to continuing this journey with PGT Trucking and Nucor.”

“By aligning our business objectives with those of our customers, PGT is advancing the transportation industry to move more freight in an efficient and environmentally clean manner,” added Troian.

A professional flatbed truck driver spends 11 hours a day driving in their truck, in accordance with Hours of Service regulations, which doesn’t include the hours they spend off duty, sleeping or preparing for the next day. With so much time spent in one space, it’s important for flatbed truck drivers to have the best equipment with the latest features to improve their comfort over the road. That’s why PGT Trucking routinely upgrades our units, with more than 160 new Peterbilt and International tractors coming in 2023. Check out the late model trucks we have available for our company flatbed truck drivers!

Peterbilt Model 579

The Peterbilt Model 579 is the most elite tractor for over-the-road truckers, using advanced technology, aerodynamic designs and safety features to boost performance. A brand-new digital dash display makes it easy for truck drivers to access critical information at a glance, and adaptive cruise and stability control features make for a smooth ride. Driver comfort is at the forefront of design, with eight feet of head room and 70 cubic feet of storage space in the sleeper. The Peterbilt Model 579 has all the bells and whistles any truck driver could ask for, backed by its powerful performance.

  • Cummins® X15 engine
  • Bendix® Wingman® FusionTM Collision Mitigation System
  • Adaptive cruise control with stability control
  • 12 speed Eaton EndurantTM automatic transmission system
  • 1500W power inverter
  • Three 12V outlets
  • Automated start and climate control functions
  • Full 15” digital dash display

International LT Series

The International LT Series continues to set the standard for driver-centric tractors. An ergonomic design gives truck drivers increased elbow, hip and leg room to be comfortable in the seat all day long, with easy-to-reach controls to keep you focused on the task at hand. Strategic mirror placement eliminates typical blind spots and improves visibility, and optimized aerodynamics and design improve noise reduction. Combined with enhanced handling and performance features, the International LT Series provides the highest quality driver experience.

  • International A26 or Cummins® X15 engine
  • Bendix® Wingman® FusionTM Collision Mitigation System
  • Adaptive cruise control with stability control
  • 12 speed Eaton EndurantTM automatic transmission system
  • 1500W power inverter
  • Automated start and climate control functions

Benefits of Late Model Equipment

Less Breakdown. The average age of a Class 8 truck on the road today is 4.4 years. Considering that long haul truckers drive an estimated 100,000 miles per year, most units already have over 400,000 miles, halfway through the average lifespan of a heavy-duty truck. Thanks to PGT’s new 2023 and 2024 model year trucks, our Company Drivers know they have quality equipment to keep them on the road, earning a steady income to support their families back home.

Enhanced Features. Late model trucks boast the latest and greatest features for truck driver comfort and safety. Adaptive cruise control and a 12-speed Eaton EndurantTM automatic transmission system increases truck driver comfort behind the wheel. Power inverters, additional outlets and automated start and climate control functions give drivers the flexibility to make their cabs feel like home. Above all, PGT helps keep our truck drivers safe through advanced collision mitigation systems.

Company Growth. After two years of record truck orders, the market is stabilizing as trucking companies slow their fleet growth. Not PGT! PGT continues to grow our fleet with new late model equipment, adding more than 160 new units in 2023. Our equipment cycle is less than 3 years, compared to the industry average of 4.4 years. PGT is supported through our direct customer freight, providing an abundance of cargo for our flatbed truck drivers.

Driver Pride. PGT’s International and Peterbilt tractors have sleek, modern designs with shiny white lacquer and crisp PGT red highlights, making these trucks a true showstopper out on the road! Our flatbed truck drivers take pride in their equipment, knowing that they’re driving for a company who invests in their comfort and safety. Nothing is better than a shiny new truck!

Driver Feedback Matters

PGT listens to our flatbed truck drivers, ensuring that our trucks are designed with the driver in mind. We hold quarterly Driver Advisory Board Meetings to discuss new vehicle specifications and seat/sleep configurations. PGT has a longstanding relationship with Hill International Trucks, producing more than 2,000 quality trucks during this partnership. In 2022, PGT began adding Peterbilt tractors to our fleet, based directly on driver feedback. PGT works with our vendors, building the exact specifications to keep our Company Drivers happy behind the wheel. At PGT, your opinion matters!

New Equipment Today, Cleaner Tomorrow

PGT is committed to advancing transportation through the Future of Flatbed®, reducing carbon emissions to meet our environmental goals. With each new vehicle specification, we ensure that our trucks offer improved fuel economy, enhanced aerodynamics and other green efficiencies to sustainably transport freight across the United States. With PGT, our flatbed truck drivers are part of the future, leading the way to a new era in trucking.

We’ve Got a Seat for You

PGT is growing, and we want you to join our fleet! Our Company Driver benefits include percentage pay; medical, dental and vision insurance; holiday and vacation pay; 401(k) plans; and more! The application process is easy, and we can have you in Training and Orientation within a week. Join PGT Trucking and get seated in a brand new Peterbilt or International today!

The post Turn Your Internship into a Job: PGT’s Top Five Tips for Success appeared first on PGT Trucking.

]]>

Internships are a great way for college students to gain experience and learn critical skills for future employment. For young professionals without much work history, an internship can boost their resume and help them stand out from the competition. Approximately 60% of employers prefer to hire individuals with internship experience, making these programs a vital part of a student’s education. A successful internship may even result in a job – 70.4% of interns receive an offer of employment after their completed program. Follow these five tips to help turn your internship into a job offer and learn more about a career with PGT Trucking.

The transportation industry is an essential component of America’s supply chain, ensuring that consumers have access to the products and materials they use every day. While our valued truck drivers are out on the road, safely delivering customer cargo, there are dedicated support staff in the office, helping to coordinate shipments, process payments and keep our operations running smoothly. Trucking is a growing industry, constantly evolving to provide safer, cleaner transportation services for the future, and we are looking for the next generation of innovators to continue supporting our Proud Professionals on the road. PGT proudly provides educational opportunities for students through the PGT Internship Pathway Program, and there are numerous career opportunities available across all fields of study.

#1 – Do Your Research

There are an estimated 300,000 people who intern each year in the U.S. It’s important to select the internship program that will provide the best opportunity for you and your career goals. Do you want to explore a new city? Are you looking to be challenged? Do you need to work around your class schedule? Would you like to see how your degree can be applied to different careers and industries? Determine what you want to gain out of your internship, and then find the program that will help you achieve your goals. Any internship will provide you with some working experience, but if you do your research, you can find an internship with purpose that will help build your career.

Remember to research the company as well. Find out their core values, mission statement, product and service offerings and top executives. This will ensure that your objectives are aligned with their business statements and help you prepare for your first day.

#2 – Use Proper Business Etiquette

Internships provide students with an opportunity to study in an actual working environment, and you should use this time to learn proper business etiquette for your chosen profession. It may seem simple, but if you can politely answer the phone, respond to emails in a timely manner and respect shared workspaces, you’ll make a positive impression with your prospective employer. Dress appropriately, be on time and follow through on your commitments. This shows that you are professional, responsible, and most importantly, hireable!

You can learn about a business’ expected practices by reviewing the employee handbook, asking the Human Resources representative or observing the general office behavior, particularly with executive management. Employers want to hire workers who fit within their corporate culture to build a more positive work environment, and by displaying the appropriate mannerisms, you’ll prove that you’re a perfect match.

#3 – Be Flexible

During your internship, you may be asked to take on additional projects, transfer to a new department or adjust your work schedule. Even if it doesn’t fit within the initial parameters of your internship, you should consider these extra opportunities. By being flexible, you show your willingness to contribute to the company’s success, and you might even learn new things that you never expected. An internship is an opportunity to grow outside of your comfort zone, so let it happen!

Employers will look more positively on interns who show their adaptability and step outside of their specific role to support the business, but it’s still important to know your limits. Don’t just say yes to everything. You also need to focus on your job performance, and if you know that you won’t be able to do the job well, you should let your supervisor know your concerns.

#4 – Learn Everything You Can

Internships are learning experiences, designed to help young professionals develop the skills they need to perform in the workplace. Take advantage of the opportunities presented to you to build a more comprehensive portfolio and network with industry professionals. Ask questions, pay attention and form strong working relationships. Even if it’s outside of your immediate focus, learn about other aspects of the business, showing potential employers that you’re invested in their entire operation.

Companies value new insight into their standard processes, and you may even uncover a problem or consider a solution that no one else has. By taking the initiative to learn more, you will stand out among other interns who only perform their basic job duties.

#5 – Treat it Like a Job

If you want a job, treat it like a job. Show up on time, work hard, and act like it matters. Companies want to see your commitment and resolve. If you act professionally, you’ll show your potential employer that you’re ready to handle the job full time.

Don’t assume that you’ll be directly approached with an offer. Let the company know that you’re interested in additional employment options upon completion of your internship and ask how you should apply.

Five Ways Truck Drivers Benefit from Contract Rates https://www.pgttrucking.com/five-ways-truck-drivers-benefit-from-contract-rates/ Thu, 05 Jan 2023 17:47:03 +0000 https://www.pgttrucking.com/?p=8999 Flatbed truck drivers can benefit from PGT Trucking's direct customer freight at contract rates, providing stability in a down market.

The post Five Ways Truck Drivers Benefit from Contract Rates appeared first on PGT Trucking.

]]>

The trucking industry is well known for its alternating periods of booms and busts, cycling through market changes every three to four years. It can be difficult for new truck drivers to effectively manage the economic highs and lows in order to achieve long-term success in the industry. When rates are high, truck drivers can easily take advantage of the spot market, but when rates decline, how can these same drivers continue earning a quality paycheck? At PGT Trucking, our flatbed truck drivers benefit from our direct customer freight at contracted rates, ensuring their revenue potential regardless of any market shifts.

Spot Rates vs. Contract Rates

Spot rates are quoted within a few days of the planned shipment, accounting for current capacity, pricing and demand in the market. During periods of tight capacity and increased demand, spot rates will be high, raising the truck driver’s earning potential. When the market turns and demand drops, spot rates fall, limiting the driver’s profits, especially when operating costs remain high. Spot rates can change daily, making it difficult for carriers and truck drivers to financially plan for the months ahead. According to FreightWaves National Truckload Index, spot rates have declined 27.6% since the beginning of 2022, with continued rate slumps forecasted in 2023.

Unlike spot rates, contract rates are set in advance of multiple shipments, outlining the length of service, load volume and transport price agreed upon by the carrier and customer. A fuel surcharge may be added to the contracted rate, accounting for any diesel fuel price changes at the time of the actual shipment. Most contract rates are valid for the course of an entire project or set on an annual basis, and because contract rates fluctuate less frequently than spot rates, carriers, truck drivers and customers have added stability.

The Power of Relationships

With contract rates, carriers, like PGT, develop strong relationships with their customers, helping their truck drivers benefit from better communication, increased efficiency and improved quality control. PGT’s Operations Management ensures consistent, safe and reliable service for our customers, resulting in constant, steady work for our drivers. Many PGT truck drivers run the same lanes each week, developing their own relationships with our customers to strengthen PGT’s business connections. These mutually-beneficial partnerships improve over time, and shippers are more likely to contact their most trusted carriers to handle any priority shipments, valuable loads or increased freight volume.

With spot rates, shippers are focused on securing a one-time deal to immediately move their freight at the lowest cost. Without the backing of a quality business relationship, carriers are left to negotiate on price alone. The winner of the spot market is usually the bidder with the lowest rate, which doesn’t always make it the safest, most reliable option. When rates are high, successful truck drivers can take advantage of the spot rate system, booking one load at a time with the instant benefit of a higher profit margin. As these rates inevitably decline over time, carriers and their truck drivers need to secure a strong customer base with contract rates in order to prevail in a down market.

PGT maintains an expansive network of direct customer freight, giving our flatbed truck drivers opportunities to succeed no matter how the market trends. For more than 40 years, our focus has been to build strong, personal relationships with our drivers and our customers, and through these relationships, we set favorable contract rates to benefit our Proud Professional truck drivers.

Five Benefits of Contract Rates for Flatbed Truck Drivers

  1. Reliable, steady work – Because 99% of PGT’s freight comes directly from our customers, we are not dependent on changing spot rates and broker boards. PGT has a steady flow of contracted freight all year long, giving our flatbed truck drivers consistent lanes to run each week. With our transparent percentage pay system, PGT drivers know their line haul revenue at the time of dispatch, adding to their financial security.
  2. Less detention time – Thanks to the strong relationships that PGT builds with our customers, we can limit a driver’s detention time at shipping and receiving facilities. Every seasoned truck driver knows that if the wheels aren’t turning, they’re not making money, and PGT understands that every minute counts. Our Operations team will work with our customers to let them know a driver’s planned arrival time, keeping the line moving to get them back on the road as quickly and as safely as possible.
  3. Fewer deadhead miles – At PGT, we have a dedicated Business Development Department committed to finding diverse freight options for our truck drivers at favorable rates. When PGT accepts a new lane at a contracted rate, our Business Development Managers are already working to identify additional customers along the way, ensuring that our flatbed truck drivers have freight to move in both directions with fewer deadhead miles.
  4. Increased freight volume – When shippers know the rates in advance, they can commit to providing more freight, and as the carrier-customer relationship develops, shippers will offer more loads, counting on their top carriers to handle any volume increases or priority shipments. PGT customers trust our safe and reliable service, giving our flatbed truck drivers plenty of freight to move.
  5. Potential for growth – When rates are down, truck drivers expand their routine driving area, exploring new lanes and different commodities to keep generating the same amount of revenue. With spot rates, it can be difficult to enter new territory – how will drivers know if they are setting a competitive market price? PGT’s Business Development Managers work behind the scenes every day to identify new freight opportunities and secure favorable contract rates, making sure our flatbed truck drivers have the potential revenue growth they need.

Make the Most with PGT Trucking

Join PGT and take advantage of our diverse freight options through contracted rates. We’ve been in business for more than 41 years, successfully operating through numerous market highs and lows. With PGT’s percentage pay model, our flatbed truck drivers have the ability to earn more when the rates are high while still benefiting from the stability of contract rates with PGT’s top customers.

Aliquippa, PA, January 5, 2023 – PGT Trucking Inc., a multi-service transportation firm offering flatbed, dedicated, international and specialized services, announces the purchase of their first Nikola Tre battery-electric vehicle (BEV) semi-truck, becoming the first flatbed trucking company to actively grow its fleet with zero-emissions equipment. PGT will immediately utilize the Nikola Tre BEV on a select customer account, primarily operating on local, dedicated routes.

“Our customers have expressed a need for sustainable shipping solutions, and we are working to align ourselves with their green energy commitments. With the purchase of the Nikola Tre BEV, PGT is prepared to meet these demands,” stated Gregg Troian, PGT Trucking President. “PGT will continue to revolutionize the industry through the Future of Flatbed®, utilizing innovative technology and zero-emissions equipment to provide progressive transportation services for our customers, enhanced lifestyle benefits for our drivers and sustainable shipping methods for the environment.”

PGT’s new Research and Development Department, led by Laurence Cox, Vice President, Sustainability, has been tasked with analyzing and applying the company’s green fleet solutions, identifying additional short-haul usages for the battery-electric truck and exploring new initiatives to support its operation across multiple platforms.

Previously, PGT signed a letter of intent to lease 100 Nikola Tre fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) trucks, and PGT’s R&D Department will help prepare for the full integration of these units into PGT’s fleet, which are anticipated to arrive later this year. With the addition of the new zero-emissions equipment, PGT is on track to reach its sustainability goal, reducing carbon emissions from its company-owned fleet by 35% by the year 2025.

“This is a tangible example of how PGT is shaping the Future of Flatbed in the transportation sector, solidifying our commitment to our customers’ sustainability goals,” stated Cox. “We are excited to put our Nikola Tre BEV to work, further refining the application of this advanced equipment through our R&D department.”

PGT’s Future of Flatbed Fleet, which consists of the company’s most elite drivers, will be the first to drive the Nikola Tre BEV, working with PGT’s R&D Department, dedicated partners and customer representatives to haul flatbed loads in real world scenarios. The drivers were selected during an extensive application process and prepared for their roles by receiving advanced training on the equipment, attending product development meetings and participating in pilot programs.

“PGT’s decision to place a Nikola Tre BEV immediately into operation is telling of their commitment to drive forward their ambitious corporate sustainability initiatives today,” said Nikola Corporation, President and CEO, Michael Lohscheller. “We are extremely proud to partner with another well-respected industry leader by providing progressive zero-emission transportation solutions that are intended to improve safety, reduce costs and CO2 emissions, and improve overall total cost of ownership.”

National Truck Driver Appreciation Week https://www.pgttrucking.com/national-truck-driver-appreciation-week/ Tue, 13 Sep 2022 23:37:26 +0000 https://pgttrucking1.wpengine.com/?p=8756 Truck drivers move 72.5% of America’s freight, driving over 300 billion miles a year. If America’s truck drivers stopped driving, our country would be thrown into chaos.

The post National Truck Driver Appreciation Week appeared first on PGT Trucking.

September 11-17, 2022

Truck drivers move 72.5% of America’s freight, driving over 300 billion miles a year. They wait in line at shipper and consignee locations, loading and unloading their cargo, inspecting their equipment and securing their commodities. These men and women drive down the highway, navigating through heavy traffic, construction and bad weather. They stay out on the road all week, sleeping in their trucks night after night, keeping the U.S. economy in motion. If America’s truck drivers stopped driving, our country would be thrown into chaos in just a few days.
Every year, we observe one week to thank truck drivers for their heroic sacrifice, unwavering commitment and fierce dedication. National Truck Driver Appreciation Week was started in 1998 by the American Trucking Associations as a way to aid driver retention and increase recognition for truckers. For more than 20 years, we have celebrated our truck drivers each September, saying thank you all week long for a job that truly is 24/7/365.
There are currently 3.36 million truck drivers in the U.S., servicing industries like healthcare, food service, construction, aerospace, retail, automotive, metals and more. Businesses across the country are connected through trucking, and roughly 80% of communities rely solely on trucks to bring them essential goods. Truck drivers deliver raw materials to manufacturers, finished goods to retailers and purchased products to consumers. Look at the items around you—everything you see was likely once a truck.
Trucking is a vital industry, fulfilling Americans’ basic needs every day, and yet, we are facing an unprecedented driver shortage. Without new drivers, the country will see a decrease in the availability of essential goods, even longer shipping delays and extreme supply chain issues, many of which we’ve already begun to see. Life on the road isn’t easy, and the job isn’t for everyone. America’s truckers will continue to drive, sustaining our economy, but now we need a new generation of drivers to answer the call.
Young adults can take advantage of the current shortage to make a high salary within their first year, earning almost $80,000. With the average cost of CDL training around $4,000-$7,000, first year truck drivers can easily cover the cost of school and set themselves up for a successful future. Compare that to the average cost of a four-year degree ($35,551) and the average starting salary for college graduates ($55,260), and the 22-year-old driving a truck is miles ahead of the 22-year-old struggling to find a job out of college.
Truck driving is a chance to explore the country, taking time to plan out life before settling down. Drivers can visit new cities, tour national landmarks and experience regional cultures, all while earning a respectful paycheck. As work cultures shift away from stereotypical office jobs with employees working nine-to-five in a solitary cubicle, truck driving provides a great alternative with a chance to experience life on the road with a community of tenured drivers, interacting with people from all across the U.S.
Those entering the trucking industry now have the opportunity to build a long and prosperous career. At PGT Trucking, a young adult can start as a company flatbed driver right after receiving their CDL and enter our Enrichment Program, designed to help new apprentice drivers succeed behind the wheel. After a few years, they can enter our Lease Purchase program and start the path to truck ownership, eventually managing their own fleet, or they can transition to a specialized career in heavy haul or cryogenic tanker transportation, diversifying their skillset and increasing their earning potential.
Flatbed trucking also offers an active lifestyle. Flatbed drivers climb up and down a trailer to secure a commodity so it won’t move in transit, lifting heavy chains, cranking down binders and throwing weighted tarps. They make routine stops to inspect their equipment and securement, and when they arrive at the delivery location, they remove the securement to start the unloading process. Flatbed truck drivers are constantly in motion, and the job provides a rewarding and satisfying physical challenge.
Truck drivers at PGT have the opportunity to take part in various Future of FlatbedSM initiatives, helping to transform trucking into an innovative and sustainable industry. With a data-driven approach, PGT is applying advanced safety protocols and improving operational efficiency. Progressive technologies like automation will provide more options for regional and local routes, creating more home time for drivers and increasing fleet utilization. We will also add zero-emission vehicles to our fleet, reducing the industry’s carbon footprint and implementing environmentally friendly practices. The Future of Flatbed is the new age of trucking, ready for the next generation of pioneers to drive revolutionary change.
Whether you’re looking for a career change, just starting out, or already an experienced veteran, there are countless opportunities to enter the trucking industry and continue the service that 7.65 million transportation workers provide on a daily basis, none more important than the men and women behind the wheel. National Truck Driver Appreciation Week is our chance to recognize these drivers, letting them know we are grateful for their efforts. It’s a week-long acknowledgment for a job that never ends.
Take a moment to say thank you. Let a truck driver know you appreciate their hard work and sacrifice.
PGT Trucking thanks all of our Proud Professional Drivers and honors a job well done!

Considering a career as an owner-operator/independent contractor? With the ever increasing demand for truck drivers, there has never been a better time to start your own business as an independent contractor.

Do you want:

  • To own your own truck

  • Flexibility and freedom

  • Increased earning potential

As an independent contractor, you will own and run your business, so it’s important to partner with a company who will help you succeed.

The main things to consider when transitioning from a company driver to an independent contractor truck driver

  • Running a business – As an independent contractor, you will face an entirely new set of tasks that were previously handled by your employer, like managing cash flow, keeping tax records and filing permits. You’ll also be responsible for maintenance costs, new equipment and other business-related expenses. By partnering with a major carrier like PGT, owner-operators can get the support they need to help run their business while maintaining their independence.

  • Start up funds – When making the transition to being an independent contractor, one of the most common questions is “How do I move from a Company Driver to an Owner-Operator without breaking the bank by purchasing my own truck?” Consider working with a company that has a proven lease purchase program.

  • Career goals – Are you looking to own your own truck? Do you dream of owning your own fleet or even starting an agency terminal? Working with a major carrier can help you meet your career goals.

  • Support – Owner-Operators have to find their freight, secure their loads and drive safely for hundreds of miles, all while trying to grow their business. They can find the business support they need through another trucking company, but it’s important to partner with a carrier that supports your independence and wants to help you meet your goals.

The main benefits of partnering with PGT as an independent contractor

  • Maintain your freedom – PGT understands that you want to run your business, so our Owner-Operator program focuses on giving you the support and assistance you need while still respecting your freedom as an independent contractor.

  • Increased earning potential – Independent contractors make more money per load through the percentage pay model. At PGT, our owner-operators earn 75% of the Line Haul Revenue. Partnering with PGT also gives you access to our strong freight network, diverse customer base and dedicated support team.

  • Support – PGT works with each individual driver to develop a customized program to ensure their success. We have an Owner-Operator Advocate who will focus on the corporate side of the business so that our independent contractors can stay on the road making money. Independent contractors also have 24/7 access to their Fleet Managers and Safety Teams for ongoing support.

  • Home time – PGT understands that you want to maximize your earning potential while still getting home for the weekend soccer game. We’ll work with your schedule so you can be home for your family.

  • Lease purchase – PGT has late model equipment available for our lease purchase program, and our trucks are never purchased from an auction. Our custom financing options will help you on the path to truck ownership without breaking the bank.

  • Maintenance support – Through PGT’s vast network, Independent Contractors can take advantage of our top-tier maintenance support to limit their downtime. We’ll get you back on the road quickly so you can continue making money.

  • Family – PGT is a family-oriented business, and we treat our team of professional drivers as our most valued asset. PGT develops personal relationships with our team that builds trust and confidence, setting up drivers for long-term success.

“PGT is very family-oriented, and they take really great care of their drivers. They want to see their drivers succeed and do well. We are all out on the road for one reason – we are trying to provide for our families and give them the best life possible.”
    – Justin Shea, Independent Contractor and Agency Terminal Manager with PGT
  • Benefits – PGT offers access to healthcare programs along with discounts on parts, tires and fuel.

  • Incentive Programs – Contractors are eligible for various incentive programs including referral bonuses, recognition of service years and safety awards.

“PGT’s compensation and incentive programs are one of the best in the industry. When talking with incoming Independent Contractors, it is one of the items that sets us apart from other trucking companies.”

PGT Trucking’s Carbon Emission Reduction Goals https://www.pgttrucking.com/pgt-carbon-emission-reduction-goals/ Wed, 13 Jul 2022 14:38:19 +0000 https://pgttrucking1.wpengine.com/?p=8863 At PGT Trucking, we understand our industry needs to change, minimizing our impact on the environment while continuing to move America’s essential goods.

The post PGT Trucking’s Carbon Emission Reduction Goals appeared first on PGT Trucking.

America is entering a new era of sustainability, with manufacturers, suppliers and consumers all focused on implementing environmentally friendly practices to reduce their carbon footprint. Now more than ever, consumers are prioritizing brands that align with their own sustainable goals, according to the Business Marketing Research and Intelligence US Micro-Shifts study from Meta. Companies are being challenged and rewarded for their green initiatives, and in the U.S., carbon dioxide emissions have declined 16.5% since their peak in 2000.
Across the country, companies are committing to sustainable business practices, but for most industries, there is still room for improvement. The transportation sector accounts for 27% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the U.S., the largest contributor among all industries according to the Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks. Trucking is a vital part of America’s economy, moving 72.5% of the country’s freight, and it will take a concentrated, industrywide effort to create a meaningful impact in carbon emission reductions while still providing an essential service.
Trucking companies can achieve their sustainability initiatives by employing a multi-pronged approach, including the use of innovative technologies, electric vehicles and fleet optimization, with both long and short-term solutions.
According to a recent study by the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE), if 50% of the heavy-duty regional haul tractors were replaced with battery electric trucks, the industry could save an estimated 29.4 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent annually. Autonomous trucks are also estimated to have a positive effect on the environment, with a study by Boundless Impact Research & Analytics showing that the GHG footprint of a class 8 truck could be reduced by 22% through automation.
While battery/fuel cell electric vehicles and autonomous trucks provide the greatest opportunities for sustainable freight transportation, these emerging technologies are still in the early stages of development. However, truck lines can make immediate gains in their carbon emission goals by enhancing their current operational strategies.
The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) estimates that at least 20% of trucks run “empty miles,” meaning that trucks are running without freight, emitting carbon dioxide without making revenue. Empty miles, or deadhead miles, are a primary form of waste for trucking companies. Carriers can reduce empty miles by optimizing their current freight routes and working with customers to identify new shipping lanes. Carriers can also target key performance indicators like fuel economy and idle time in an effort to further reduce their carbon emissions. With a deliberate focus on these initiatives, trucking companies can increase their productivity while reducing waste and operating costs and generate additional revenue and increased satisfaction for their drivers.
For trucking companies, sustainable shipping solutions can lead to added benefits, attracting new customers and drivers. Freight customers want carriers who are committed to the same environmental goals, working together to reduce the customer’s Scope 3 emissions (indirect emissions from a company’s value chain). Young drivers entering the industry are increasingly concerned about sustainability and are more likely to choose a carrier with strong green initiatives. Government regulations and incentives stand to also encourage carriers to consider new initiatives to reduce their carbon emissions.
At PGT Trucking, Inc., we understand that our industry needs to change, minimizing our impact on the environment while continuing to move America’s essential goods. PGT is committed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions of our company-owned fleet by 35% by the year 2025. We will lead the way to a sustainable future by:
    • Appointing a Vice President of Sustainability to head our decarbonization efforts
    • Receiving 100 Nikola Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles
    • Identifying lane pairs to reduce empty truck miles
    • Utilizing Locomation’s ARC technology
    • Developing the next generation of low/zero carbon equipment with our suppliers

Aliquippa, PA, May 26, 2022 – PGT Trucking Inc., a multi-service transportation firm offering flatbed, dedicated, international and specialized services, is taking an industry-leading approach to driver turnover, efficiency and reducing carbon emissions — mainstream issues plaguing the trucking sector. Together with its partners, Locomation and Nikola Corporation, PGT hosted an Innovation Showcase on May 20, 2022, at PGT’s corporate headquarters in Aliquippa, PA, to feature revolutionary transportation solutions that will become the Future of FlatbedSM.
“PGT is listening to our customers. We know their pain points. And we are taking proactive measures to find innovative shipping solutions that address these issues,” said Gregg Troian, PGT Trucking President. “Through our investments in Locomation and Nikola, we will be able to move more freight in an efficient and environmentally friendly manner.”
Event attendees heard from Locomation’s Co-founder and Vice President of Engineering, Michael George, who discussed freight optimization and technology implementation systems. Guests had a first-hand look at Locomation’s Autonomous Relay ConvoySM (ARC) technology, which PGT will implement over the next eight years on over 30 separate Autonomous Relay Network segments across the country.
Nikola representatives Jill Guenther, Customer Success Manager, and Paul Clark, Head of Sales and Dealer Operations, addressed the crowd on Nikola’s battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) and infrastructure solutions. Event participants were able to interact with the Nikola Tre BEV and Mobile Charging Trailer (MCT) and take part in a ride-along and equipment demonstrations. Last fall, PGT signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to lease 100 Nikola Tre FCEVs, with a rollout beginning in 2023.
“We are proud to be part of PGT’s commitment to find innovative solutions that reduce CO2 emissions and overall costs,” said Michael Lohscheller, President Nikola Motor. “PGT’s forward-thinking approach to sustainable freight transportation is evident in its plans to implement zero-emissions technology into their operations.”
“Advanced trucking technologies help PGT to better service our customers, support our drivers, and ensure our employees can perform their jobs effectively,” said Seth Stayer, PGT Trucking Manager of Applied Technology. “By implementing these new platforms, our staff can focus on the things that matter: building relationships, keeping trucks on the road and making our customers happy.”
PGT’s Future of Flatbed program encompasses all progressive transportation endeavors with a focus on reducing operating costs, fuel expenses and CO2 emissions, increasing capacity and utilization and creating more economical freight rates for customers.
“Regardless of what the future may look like, whether hydrogen fueling, automation or driver assistance, PGT remains rooted in quality,” added Andrew Erin, PGT Trucking Director of Risk and Safety, and Innovation Committee Chairman. “We are a company that focuses on delivering high-quality results through high-quality relationships.”

Now is a Great Time to Start Your Professional Driving Career

Trucking Industry by the Numbers (U.S.)

  • There is a shortage of roughly 80,000 truck drivers.[1]
  • The number of unfilled trucking jobs is expected to double by 2030.[1]
  • The average commercial truck driver in the U.S. is 48 years old.[2]
  • Approximately 72.5% of all freight in the U.S. is moved via truck.[3]

Reasons for the Truck Driver Shortage

  • Aging Workforce: Many current drivers are approaching retirement age, and companies aren’t able to replenish their workforce fast enough.
  • Supply Chain Issues: Increasing demand for products has overwhelmed the capacity of the supply chain and has pressured the transportation industry to solve these logistical issues.
  • Driver Stereotypes: Contrary to popular belief, truck driving is an elite profession made up of men and women who are smart, talented and dedicated. Drivers are routinely drug/alcohol tested, follow strict safety regulations and meet the physical demands of the job.

Why Consider a Flatbed Driving Career with PGT Trucking?

  • Availability of Jobs: With the current truck driver shortage, there are always open positions for professional flatbed drivers, truck technicians and office personnel.

At PGT Trucking, our fleet averages 27% of the line haul revenue. We know that percentage pay beats out mileage pay, which is one of the reasons that PGT leads the industry in driver compensation. Drivers paid by percentage can make 50% more than the same jobs using mileage pay.

In addition to having one of the best pay packages in the industry, PGT offers great benefits. At PGT, our CEO, Pat Gallagher, is on the same health plan as our company drivers. We cover everyone equally, from the top executives down to non-exempt employees. This is because at PGT, you are part of a family.

At PGT, we cycle our equipment over a four year period of time. At the end of four years, we complete a full assessment on our equipment. We may choose to offer trucks in our Lease Purchase Program if they have low mileage and are mechanically sound.

We know that in order to recruit and retain the best professional flatbed truck drivers we need to have new equipment, so that’s exactly what we do. Our truck drivers can rely on late model equipment, which helps us achieve the highest level of success and safety.

4 – Respect

“I talk to drivers on a regular basis. Usually, if they have a problem, they call me and I try to put them in touch with the right people. I still have relationships with [drivers] going back to 1981. I think you have to understand the job that they are doing, how difficult the job is and today I have a better understanding of what is required with the professional driver… PGT is like a family because we care.”

  • Pat Gallagher, CEO/Founder, PGT Trucking

PGT is family, plain and simple. You are not a truck number. You are a name, a face, and a valued member of our team.

We know truckers provide essential services to our country, undergo extensive training, and work hard to provide a good lifestyle for their families. They deserve to be treated fairly.

At PGT, what we say and what we do are one in the same. We do not say one thing to get drivers in the door and then do another once they are here. Transparency is KEY to showing drivers respect.

Our experienced management team respects your time and works with reliable customers to ensure you are moving and making money. Your safety is a priority each and every day.

5 – Support & Training

PGT offers extensive training and support for our truck drivers. Even if you are a flatbed truck driver with 20 years of experience, we want to make sure you have the knowledge and tools to be successful at PGT.

At PGT, we believe in “practicing what you preach.” Each week, PGT staff from the Operations, Maintenance, Compliance/Safety/Risk, Sales, Recruiting, and Load Center Departments head to the Blairsville training facility to take part in a two-day training program, learning the fundamentals of load securement, both in the classroom and hands-on in the warehouse. To properly support our drivers, this training helps corporate staff members gain a better understanding of what our Proud Professionals encounter on the road each day. Our drivers have support 24/7/365.

If you are looking to build experience in the flatbed trucking industry, you won’t get better training, orientation, and ongoing support than what we offer at PGT.

Cole Welham, General Manager, Liedtka Logistics; Carol Walla, Site Manager, Gary; Sebastian Wagner, Fleet Manager; and Katie Rousseau, Assistant Breakdown Manager took part in our Flatbed 101 training in Blairsville, PA.

“This training was extremely beneficial! You hear about what the drivers do each day, but as an office staff member, you do not realize all that they have to go through to secure the commodity on their trailer. I believe everyone should take part in Flatbed 101 to experience what a driver encounters out on the road. I appreciate our drivers so much more after this experience!” – Katie Rousseau

Blairsville, PA, January 19, 2022 – PGT Trucking Inc., and New Village Institute Blairsville have partnered to help students launch rewarding careers as diesel technicians.
NVI Blairsville, the newest and largest dedicated diesel and auto technician training campus in the nation, launched innovative six-month technician programs on January 3, 2022. The programs are licensed by the Pennsylvania State Board of Private Licensed Schools, Pennsylvania Department of Education.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that by the end of 2022, the commercial trucking industry will need approximately 67,000 trained technicians and 75,000 more diesel engine specialized professionals to keep up with demand. Focusing on the core skills required by employers to get new workers on the job quickly, NVI Blairsville addresses a critical need to add more capable technicians to the workforce.
Like NVI, PGT Trucking, a leader in the transportation industry, is focused on developing and using the latest technology in a rapidly changing field. The companies want to advance the industries that are vital to supporting the U.S. economy.
“We are pleased to support NVI Blairsville’s educational mission by sponsoring NVI student tuition grants as well as a classroom that will bear the PGT brand,” said PGT Trucking CEO Pat Gallagher. “NVI’s staff understands what fleets and dealers need in this rapidly changing infrastructure and logistics environment, and knows the difficulty in sourcing quality technicians. We are pleased to support their focused efforts to help solve the technician shortage and we are eager to welcome new technicians from NVI into our PGT family.”
“Technician careers offer leading wages and benefits. Depending on certifications and level of experience, a technician can earn an average of $25 per hour, plus benefits,” Gallagher added.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that pay for some diesel technicians ranges upwards of $36 per hour.
Gary Beeman, CEO of NVI Blairsville parent company New Village Initiative, welcomed the partnership with the innovative staff of PGT.
“NVI Blairsville was purposely designed to quickly help solve the technician crisis that is harming the U.S. economy while also enabling access to a larger population of prospective students and professionals looking for a new, rewarding career and also to assist our partners in the trucking, logistics, automotive and heavy equipment industries, who are in critical need of technicians,” Beeman said. “This partnership with PGT, one of the most advanced fleets in transportation, is a perfect example of how we serve the students, our partner industries, the community and the national economy.”
“Our industry-experienced instructors teach all the core skills our employer partners told us they need,” Beeman said. “By focusing on those needs, we are able to get technicians through comprehensive training in six months instead of the standard one to two years, and at a significantly lower cost that can greatly expand the population of prospective students. Through our New Village Foundation and our strategic industry partners such at PGT, we can offer many prospective students loans and/or grants that they otherwise might not be able to qualify for.”
“In a time of critical shortage that is affecting the U.S. delivery infrastructure and customer response times, we are excited to team with our neighbors, PGT, to support this industry that drives the economy in America,” Beeman added.
NVI Blairsville is located in picturesque Indiana County Pennsylvania’s Burrell Township, just an hour east of Pittsburgh. The 26.5-acre site includes 282,000 square feet of classroom and shop space. Students split their time between classroom instruction and hands-on training on an impressive array of equipment with the latest diagnostic technology.
Gallagher said PGT and NVI both bring a professional, innovative approach to work that supports the backbone of the U.S. economy. “PGT has been a leader in the community for decades, but we know our impact goes far beyond our local market, too,” Gallagher said. “Our talented staff welcomes the chance to team with the professionals at NVI to meet our shared goals.”

Our Top 8 Tips To Keep Your Truck Safe At Truck Stops

To most truck drivers out on the road, seeing a truck stop is like a breath of fresh air after a long day. Truck stops give drivers a chance to relax, refuel, get some rest, stretch their legs, clean up, and get some food.

A truck stop is also a place one could incur damage to their vehicle if you don’t take proactive measures.

8 Tips for flatbed truck drivers to keep your truck safe

1. Pick long-term neighbors

The easiest way for truck drivers to avoid damage to their trucks is to pick good neighbors. If truck drivers seem to be settled in for the night or at least seem to be staying in one place for awhile, parking between them is your best bet.

2. Look for natural blockers

By avoiding possible accident areas and choosing natural blockers, truck drivers can help protect their vehicles. This is why parking next to stationary objects may be the best option when searching for the right spot. In addition, parking next to poles or guardrails can provide a natural barrier between trucks so that the risk of an accident is much lower.

While it can be challenging to control parking neighbors, finding a curb to park beside can give truck drivers a feeling of safety and only require them to focus on one neighbor instead of two.

3. Avoid high-traffic areas

One of the best practices to avoid accidents is to purposely avoid high traffic areas. When approaching a truck stop, truck drivers need to assess their surroundings to determine where the highest and lowest volume of truck traffic will be to help prevent potential damage. Try to park away from spots close to food, shops, or other public buildings, and avoid the path to enter and exit the truck stop itself. When in doubt, park in the very back end of the lot. Most of the traffic occurs in the front third of the lot closest to the buildings.

4. Don’t abuse fuel islands

Many truck drivers make the mistake of stopping for fuel and, when done, decide to take their break right then and there. Abusing fuel islands can irritate other drivers since fuel islands tend to be one of the most popular areas at truck stops. This is why it’s best to stay there only as long as you need to. Make sure to move from the fuel island as soon as possible and choose a spot away from traffic.

5. Utilize your dashcams

While precautions can be taken to avoid damage and hit-and-runs, sometimes these things can still happen. There is only so much a truck driver can do to prevent accidents. However, having a dashcam can help hold the responsible party accountable or, at the very least, have evidence that the damage was not the truck driver’s fault.

6. Take note of your neighbors

It’s not a bad idea to note who is parked beside you, just in case. You can take a quick photo with your phone of the company name, license plate, and unit number of your neighbors.

7. Take a moment before refueling

Stop before you pull into the fuel bay and ensure the area is clear and that your trailer is lined up. This is the time to check the canopy height if you have an overheight load before driving beneath it. While you are refueling, this is an excellent opportunity to do a quick visual inspection of your truck.

Before leaving the fuel island, take a quick mental note of the turning points so that you can avoid clipping the fuel pump. Your trailer should clear the fuel area before you turn.

8. Be mindful of time

If possible, settle down sooner rather than later, especially if it is an overnight stay. Proper trip planning may allow you to park early in the day and allows the driver to have their pick of the lot since they’ll have the ability to see the truck stop’s layout and plan accordingly. Trying to park too late in the evening can leave a driver with limited options, and the spots that minimize damage will likely already be gone.

Conclusion

Truck stops were designed to be a resting place for all truck drivers, and with the rise of ecommerce and the need to move more goods, the number of vehicles that need to use these areas has only increased. Unfortunately, this also means that the dangers of vehicle damage have also risen. Safety is always the number one priority in any industry and that is no different for trucking.
