Aliquippa, PA, February 1, 2024 – PGT Trucking Inc., a multi-service transportation firm offering flatbed, dedicated, international and specialized services, has received the 2024 Best Fleets to Drive For® Top 20 recognition from CarriersEdge. PGT was also named to the Best Fleets to Drive For® Top 20 list in 2023.

Launched in 2008, Best Fleets to Drive For® is the only annual program dedicated to uncovering the best workplaces in the North American trucking industry. This prestigious award recognizes the top for-hire trucking companies that provide outstanding work environments for their professional truck drivers. The overall winners in the large and small fleet categories will be named at the 2024 Best Fleets Education & Awards Conference in April.

“PGT Trucking was founded in 1981 on the principles of providing quality service and building personal relationships,” said PGT Trucking Chief Operating Officer Chad Marsilio. “After more than 40 years, these principles remain true today. People are PGT’s most valuable asset, and we actively invest in our employees, supporting their personal and professional growth. We are appreciative of platforms like Best Fleets to Drive For® that provide an opportunity for us to continually evaluate and improve our benefits for our Proud Professional drivers.”

To be considered for the Best Fleets program, companies had to be nominated by one of their professional drivers and undergo a thorough evaluation process consisting of a detailed questionnaire, leadership interviews and driver surveys. Fleets were judged on several categories, including overall compensation, health benefits, safety programs, performance management, professional development, career opportunities and more.

“Receiving this award for the second year in a row reaffirms PGT’s commitment to our Proud Professional Drivers,” added Marsilio. “Through the Future of Flatbed®, we will continue to drive the advancement of our industry, providing diversified shipping solutions for our customers, dynamic career opportunities for aspiring professionals, and a safe and rewarding lifestyle for our drivers.”

Every experienced truck driver knows there’s one important benefit that stands out from the rest – their pay. Most trucking companies offer mileage pay, compensating drivers at a set rate for their total miles driven. The current average for solo truck drivers is $.40-$.64 per mile. Other companies, like PGT Trucking, use a percentage pay model, which compensates drivers using a percentage of the total load revenue. Each pay structure has its own pros and cons, but most of the time, percentage pay outweighs mileage.

High Performers Earn More

Flatbed truck drivers work hard, and they should be fairly compensated for their efforts. With mileage, truck drivers are only paid for the miles they drive. It doesn’t include the time spent waiting to load and unload, stuck in traffic or securing and tarping the commodity. With percentage pay, flatbed truck drivers earn money based on the value of the load. They are motivated to improve their performance by efficiently planning their route, minimizing layover times and making timely deliveries. Higher performance means more loads, and more loads means more money with percentage pay.

Boost Earnings with Safer Driving

Fuel costs are a significant portion of a trucking company’s expenses, especially with rising diesel prices. Flatbed truck drivers help manage these costs, and with a percentage pay system, they are encouraged to adopt more fuel-efficient habits. By maintaining consistent speeds, reducing idle time, and avoiding abrupt maneuvers, flatbed truck drivers can improve their fuel economy and become safer drivers. When flatbed truck drivers are paid by the load and not the mile, they can confidently adjust their driving habits and limit these expenses. With PGT’s added safety incentives, flatbed truck drivers will boost their own earnings as well.

Fair Pay for Short Distances

Mileage pay doesn’t always compensate truck drivers for short-distance hauls or congested routes. Most of the time, mileage-based carriers only pay based on the distance between the shipper and receiver zip codes. This doesn’t match the actual number of miles driven, and truck drivers may miss out on pay opportunities if they have to detour or prefer to take a different route. With percentage pay, flatbed truck drivers earn the appropriate compensation regardless of the distance they drive. Percentage pay outweighs the mileage no matter the trip length.

Less Impact from External Factors

Traffic congestion, road closures, and poor weather conditions can all negatively impact truck drivers on a mileage pay system. All these things are outside the truck driver’s control, and it can be stressful to manage these delays – every truck driver knows that they aren’t getting paid when the wheels don’t turn. Thanks to percentage pay, these factors don’t change a flatbed truck driver’s pay since they’re paid for the value of the load, not how many miles they traveled in a day. This reduces the

Freedom to Choose the Route

With mileage pay, truck drivers often have to travel the dispatched route, which is usually the lowest mileage. Some mileage-based trucking companies might not even account for any detours made due to road construction or traffic congestion. In the trucking industry, time is money, and truck drivers should have the freedom to choose the route that best suits their needs. Flatbed truck drivers using a percentage pay system can set up their own trip plan, factoring in their Hours of Service, preferred routes and truck stops, the time of day, parking locations, and more. When a flatbed truck driver is paid by the load value, they can choose the route they want to take.

Shared Investment

When truck drivers are paid by the mile, they aren’t always receiving a share of the company’s profits. With percentage pay, trucking companies and their truck drivers have a mutual investment in the company’s profits. Flatbed truck drivers earn a percentage of the revenue, and when the company makes more, so does the driver. Both parties are committed to helping the other succeed, and thanks to PGT’s

Rate Transparency

With a percentage pay system, flatbed truck drivers know how much they’re going to make before they’re dispatched. The value of the load is already set, and by applying their percentage, the truck drivers know their anticipated revenue from the start. Under mileage pay, most truck drivers have to accept the load before they know exactly how many miles they have to travel, and it doesn’t account for any changes in the route along the way.

Stop counting miles and receive your fair share of the load!

Flatbed truck drivers work hard, and they deserve to be paid for their time behind the wheel AND out of the cab. With PGT’s percentage pay structure, our Proud Professionals are fairly compensated for every load they haul, regardless of the miles they drive. For more than four decades, we have been committed to the success and safety of our flatbed truck drivers.

Flatbed Trucking Basics: Everything You Need to Know https://www.pgttrucking.com/basics-of-flatbed-trucking-job/ Thu, 16 Mar 2023 19:56:00 +0000 https://www.pgttrucking.com/?p=9177 Flatbed trucks are a vital component of the U.S. supply chain. PGT Trucking reviews the basics about a job in flatbed trucking.

The post Flatbed Trucking Basics: Everything You Need to Know appeared first on PGT Trucking.

]]>

At PGT Trucking, we specialize in flatbed transportation, supporting the steel, building materials, machinery, oil & gas, raw materials, aluminum, and automotive industries. The flatbed trucking market is valued at $19 billion, and industry demand remains high, with the current national load-to-truck flatbed ratio averaging 15.68 loads per truck compared to 2.02 loads per truck in the dry van segment. As the U.S. heads into spring, flatbed trucking carriers expect a seasonal upswing, hauling building materials, agricultural equipment, landscaping supplies and more. Flatbed trucks are a vital component of the U.S. supply chain, so let’s review the basics, giving you everything you need to know for a job in flatbed trucking.

What is flatbed trucking?

Flatbed trucking involves hauling an open deck trailer, a “flatbed,” that doesn’t have any walls like a dry van or box trailer. The open deck allows cargo to be loaded from different angles using a forklift or crane, making flatbed trailers ideal for transporting large, bulky commodities. A distinctive factor of flatbed trucking is load securement. Because the cargo is placed on an open deck, the load must be secured to the flatbed trailer to keep the commodity from moving during transit. Flatbed truck drivers must physically secure their loads on top of the trailer, lifting heavy chains, tarps and other equipment. It’s a physical job that involves more than just driving a truck!

Typical flatbed commodities:

  • Steel coils, plates or sheets
  • Wallboard and paper rolls
  • Pipe
  • Lumber
  • Mill rolls and ingots
  • Structural rails and beams
  • Prefabricated concrete
  • Mulch, shingles and super sacks
  • Machinery

Flatbed trailer types:

  • Flatbed: Open deck trailer with a length of 48’ or 53’ with a height of 5’.
  • Step deck: Open deck trailer with a bottom and top deck, used for hauling cargo that cannot fit on a standard flatbed trailer due to height restrictions. The bottom deck is lower to the ground than a standard flatbed trailer.
  • Removable gooseneck (RGN): Open deck trailer with a detachable front, creating a ramp to help the loading process. RGN trailers are designed to transport tall and/or long commodities.
  • Conestoga: Specialized flatbed trailer with a rectangular outer shell/tarp that folds up during the loading process like an accordion. When the Conestoga trailer is closed, the cargo is protected from the elements without the need for additional tarps.
  • Side kit: Trailer with side panels made of wood/fiberglass and a circular shell/tarp on top, typically used for cargo that isn’t prepackaged.

What is load securement?

Proper load securement is one of the main tasks for a flatbed truck driver. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) sets cargo securement rules for all cargo-carrying commercial motor vehicles operating in interstate commerce. These regulations are in place in prevent any cargo from shifting or falling off the trailer, keeping our highways safe for truck drivers and other motorists.

Once a flatbed trailer is loaded with the commodity, it is the truck driver’s responsibility to properly secure the cargo. The commodity’s type, weight, length, loading position and size all factor into determining the proper securement method, including the number of securement devices that will be legally required by the FMCSA. PGT’s company policy adds one extra securement device beyond the number required by FMCSA as a part of our commitment to safety.

Securement Equipment:

  • Beveled lumber/dunnage
  • Trip block
  • Coil racks
  • Chains
  • Ratchet binders
  • Edge protectors (metal and plastic)
  • Rubber belting
  • Rubber bungees (bungees are NOT used to secure equipment or cargo)
  • Steel tarps
  • Straps
  • J-Hooks

Flatbed truck drivers use chains, binders and straps to tie down the commodity, and extra dunnage and trip blocks can be used to prevent forward movement. Once the load is secured, the flatbed truck driver must then tarp the load, protecting the cargo from weather and debris (depending on the commodity type and client instructions). Steel tarps can weigh 65lbs or more, and flatbed truck drivers must be able to lift, carry and maneuver these tarps. Tarping is one of the most physically taxing jobs for a flatbed truck driver, but they take pride in doing their job well!

Once the load is secured, the flatbed truck driver can head out, starting the drive to make a safe and timely delivery. But the job isn’t done yet! The load’s securement must be routinely checked along the way to ensure that nothing has shifted and chains and straps are still tight.

Load Securement Checks:

  • Within the first 50 miles or 1 hour, whichever comes first
  • Every 150 miles or 3 hours thereafter, whichever comes first
  • At every change of duty status
  • Immediately after a hard brake or evasive maneuver

What makes a great flatbed truck driver?

Safety! Flatbed truck drivers are committed to safety by keeping their loads secured, driving defensively and following all guidelines, rules and regulations for safe operations. These truck drivers are dedicated, working outside in extreme heat or cold, rain or shine, all day long. They take precautions to protect themselves and those around them, ensuring that everyone can get home safely to their families. Flatbed truck drivers are patient. They navigate through construction zones, heavy traffic and distracted drivers, all while staying calm behind the wheel.

Flatbed truck drivers are meticulous, paying close attention to every detail while effectively communicating with their support teams. They are natural problem solvers, ready to work through any situation that comes their way.

Above all, flatbed trucking is physical. These drivers must be able to climb up and down the trailer multiple times, throw chains, lift tarps and safely maneuver around the cargo. Successful flatbed truck drivers love the action!

Does flatbed trucking pay more?

Yes! Flatbed trucking is a specialized field, and flatbed truck drivers can expect a higher pay rate than dry van truck drivers, earning an average of $13,000 more annually. At PGT, our drivers are paid a percentage of the line haul, and our Company Drivers averaged an annual gross of $68,000-$100,000 in 2022. Because a flatbed truck can be used for a variety of end markets, there is a high demand for these talented truck drivers, and there is plenty of freight all year long.

PGT Trucking understands that there is no one-size-fits-all career goal for truck drivers. Every truck driver has different needs for revenue, home time and equipment, which is why PGT offers multiple career options, helping truck drivers find their best fit. A Company Flatbed Truck Driver position is perfect for someone who just earned their Class A CDL. PGT’s Lease Purchase Program is a great way for aspiring Owner-Operators to get their first truck or even begin growing their own fleet. No matter what your career goal is, PGT will find the right flatbed trucking job for you. Let’s explore how you can advance your trucking career with PGT.

COMPANY FLATBED DRIVER

What are the benefits of being a company flatbed driver?

Company truck drivers are direct employees of the trucking company, receiving pay, benefits and equipment to use. The company owns the truck and trailer and books the freight – you just drive! This can be a great option for someone new to the industry or someone who doesn’t want the additional work and expenses of being a small business owner. Company drivers do not pay for fuel, maintenance or equipment – the company will cover these expenses.

At PGT, our Company Flatbed Truck Drivers receive up to 28% of line haul revenue and have employee benefits including medical, dental and vision insurance, holiday and vacation pay, a 401(k) plan and more. We use late model equipment, recently adding brand new 2023 International and Peterbilt tractors to our fleet. With over 30 terminal locations across the U.S., PGT ensures that we have contracted freight to keep our drivers making money all week long.

Can I join PGT without having truck driving experience?

PGT accepts candidates with no driving experience, as long as you already have your Class A CDL. Our industry-leading Training and Safety Orientation program will prepare you for life over-the-road, and our Certified PRO Trainers will ride with you for the first few weeks, giving you real-world training scenarios with an experienced professional by your side. Once you’re seated in your own truck, PGT’s transitional pay package will provide you with the financial stability you need to focus on driving safely during your first eight weeks solo.

What if I have no flatbed trucking experience?

At PGT, we will help you make the transition to a flatbed trucking career. During PGT’s Training and Safety Orientation, you’ll learn the flatbed basics, building a solid foundation on load securement, DOT regulations and more. Experienced drivers may be seated right after Training and Safety Orientation, giving you the ability to earn revenue right away. You’ll also have a dedicated Safety Manager available 24/7 to help you with any questions on safe loading practices, cargo securement, driving habits and more.

Are there options to advance my career as a Company Flatbed Driver?

PGT offers several safety incentives for Company Flatbed Drivers, including our Launch and Loyalty Retention Bonuses. In addition, Company Flatbed Drivers are eligible to join our advanced fleets, which come with plenty of perks to recognize their accomplishments:
  • Million Mile and Safe Drivers: PGT’s Million Mile and Safe Drivers are the safest drivers in our fleet. We celebrate the tremendous milestones of our Million Mile Safe Drivers every year with a private award ceremony.
  • Premier Professionals: PGT’s Premier Professionals maintain incredible safety and performance standards at all times, making them the most elite drivers in our fleet.
  • Certified PRO Trainers: PGT’s Certified PRO Trainers are tasked with preparing our newest drivers for a truck driving career, and these dedicated individuals are a vital component in our Training and Safety Orientation program.
  • Future of Flatbed®: PGT’s Future of Flatbed Fleet will drive our sustainable shipping solutions, using innovative technology and equipment to revolutionize the transportation industry.

Still looking for the right fit?

For drivers interested in additional opportunities, PGT offers company positions through our affiliate, Southern Pines Trucking. With Southern Pines Heavy Haul Division, experienced flatbed truck drivers can elevate their career, using specialized equipment to haul the most oversized and overweight loads imaginable.

Interested in taking your career in a different direction? Consider obtaining your HAZMAT and cryogenic tanker endorsements to haul liquid nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen and more. Southern Pines also offers HAZMAT and Cryogenic positions for Company Drivers, Lease Purchase Drivers and Independent Contractors.

Lease Purchase Operator

What if I want to own my own truck but need help getting started?

Lease Purchase Operators are drivers who lease their equipment from the trucking company, making payments to eventually purchase the vehicle outright. A lease purchase program is a great option for the truck driver who always wanted to own their truck but couldn’t afford the large down payment on a new vehicle. Lease Purchase Operators earn a higher pay percentage but are also responsible for their own operating expenses, including fuel, maintenance, insurance, taxes and healthcare. Using a lease purchase program can help prospective Owner-Operators get started, easing them into the business side of trucking.

Not all Lease Purchase Programs are equal. How do I know I’m getting the best deal?

When looking at a lease purchase program, make sure you understand the full terms of the lease – is a down payment required; how payments do you have to make; is there a large payment at the end of the lease? Does the carrier offer any additional benefits or support with administrative and insurance work? Do they provide assistance with booking loads, ensuring you can generate enough revenue to make the payments?

PGT’s Lease Purchase Program offers flexible financing options, requires no money down and has no balloon payment at the end of the lease. Our Lease Purchase Manager will guide you toward success, coaching you on budgeting, freight selection and more. PGT’s Lease Purchase Operators earn 75% of the line haul revenue and receive 100% of fuel surcharges, and we also defer tractor payments for the first four weeks, including a free trailer rental during that time.

Owner-Operator

I already own my truck. How can I benefit from partnering with a major carrier?

For Owner-Operators and Independent Contractors who already own their equipment, it can be beneficial to partner with a major carrier. Trucking is a cyclical industry, and shipping rates will always fluctuate, creating challenges for Owner-Operators during market downswings. According to the American Transportation Research Institute, 2021 marked the highest marginal cost on record for the industry. As operating costs continue to rise, it’s important for Owner-Operators to secure strong contracted freight to help offset expenses.

At PGT, 99% of our freight comes directly from our customers, which provides added stability for Owner-Operators over of the spot rate market and broker boards. Owner-Operators also receive support from dedicated PGT Operations and Safety personnel, helping you achieve your revenue and home time goals each week. PGT’s Owner-Operators earn 75% of line haul revenue and receive 100% of fuel surcharges, with discounts available on fuel, parts, tires, PrePass and more. Through PGT’s partnership with Penske Truck Leasing, Owner-Operators also have access to more than 850 shop locations in the U.S., increasing your uptime potential.

Can I really choose my own loads if I work with a major carrier?

Yes! At PGT, we respect your small business, and there is no forced dispatch. Owner-Operators can take advantage of our diverse freight network, choosing the loads that work best for you. PGT is here to assist you with any administrative, compliance, safety or other operating needs, making it easy for Owner-Operators to achieve their career goals. PGT’s longest tenured Owner-Operator has been with our company for nearly 40 years, highlighting the success of PGT’s Owner-Operator program.

Fleet Ownership

What if I want to own my own fleet of trucks one day?

PGT supports our Owner-Operators and Lease Purchase Operators, including their goals to advance toward fleet ownership. Fleet Owners have full access to PGT’s resources, all while managing their own drivers and customers. PGT will support your business, offering customizable plans to meet your exact needs. Together, we will build an effective partnership that contributes to the growth of both companies.

After reviewing your application, your Driver Recruiter will order your commercial driving reports, including your Motor Vehicle Record (MVR), Commercial Driver’s License Information System (CDLIS), criminal background reports and Pre-Employment Screening Program (PSP score). The reports are processed quickly, and your Driver Recruiter will let you know if your application needs to be updated with any additional information before proceeding.

Step 4: Predictive Index (PI) Behavioral Assessment

Your Driver Recruiter will also send you a link to complete your PI behavioral assessment. This tool helps PGT understand your natural behavioral tendencies, giving us insight into who you are. Based on your PI results, we’ll match you with the Fleet Manager who best complements your style, building a solid foundation for your relationship from the start. The PI consists of a few questions about your personality and how you work, and it takes about 15-20 minutes to complete. The assessment is mobile friendly, but it’s helpful to complete the questions in a private setting with minimal distractions.

Note: There is no pass or fail result on the PI.

Step 5: Operations Interview

Once your application and PI are complete, your Driver Recruiter will schedule your Operations Interview with one of PGT Trucking’s Fleet Managers. At PGT, your Fleet Manager is more than just a dispatcher. They are true partners, supporting you every mile to help you succeed over the road. During the Operations Interview, you’ll have an opportunity to speak with your potential Fleet Manager, letting them know your expectations for pay, home time, preferred shipping lanes, commodity types and more. In return, our Fleet Manager will prepare you for PGT’s standards on job performance, utilization, communication and professionalism.

PGT believes in laying the groundwork for a successful partnership by having you speak with our Operations team during the application process, ensuring that our viewpoints are aligned before you make a commitment. We encourage you to be honest during the interview, sharing your true expectations – how much do you need to make each week to support your family? Where are you most comfortable running? What do you want out of your trucking company? This is your opportunity to learn more about our daily processes and determine if PGT is the right fit for you.

After the Operations Interview, your Driver Recruiter will check back in with you, confirming that you’re ready to proceed with PGT Trucking.

Step 6: Drug Screen

Next, your PGT Driver Recruiter will order your drug screen authorizations. We’ll provide you with the closest location that is within our drug screening network, and your paperwork will be provided directly to the facility.

At PGT, we require a urine test and hair follicle analysis. It can take up to 10 business days to receive results, so it’s important to complete this step in a timely manner.

Step 7: Send Us Your Credentials

After completing your drug screen, we’re ready to schedule your Truck Driver Training and Orientation. You’ll need to send us copies of the following credentials so our Training Department can prepare your file:

  • CDL (picture front and back)
  • Social Security Card
  • DOT medical card
  • TWIC (if applicable)
  • Direct deposit information
  • Other items may be requested as needed

Step 8: Truck Driver Training and Orientation

PGT Trucking’s industry-leading Driver Training and Orientation program is a five-day course at our facility in Blairsville, PA. Once you are scheduled for the week, we will arrange your travel, including your transportation to the Pittsburgh region (if needed), lodging for the week, and local transportation to and from our training facility. Company Drivers will receive Training and Orientation pay, including a per diem for meals.

Every Tuesday morning, our new class of Proud Professional Drivers is introduced on a video call to the entire PGT corporate staff, including company executives, helping us to welcome you to the PGT family. Our Corporate Chaplain also meets with each class during the week, encouraging personal and professional growth through strong personal connections. These meetings are an opportunity for you to ask questions, learn more about PGT, and experience our safety-focused culture.

During Truck Driver Training and Orientation, you’ll receive in-depth classroom instruction and hands-on opportunities focused on safety, cargo securement, advanced driver training and more. Our team of instructors consists of veteran CDL drivers with over 100 years of combined experience. They will walk you through everything you need to learn about flatbed trucking, including the proper securement of steel coils, plates, rails, wallboard, lumber, pipe and more. You will physically secure mock loads in our Training Bay, strapping, chaining and tarping the various commodity types, and complete an evaluation on driving, securement and PGT Trucking best practices. For experienced flatbed drivers, our Training team will help you brush up on the basics and learn the PGT way, getting you back out on the road quickly.

PGT Flatbed Truck Drivers are Proud Professionals. A proper appearance must be maintained on the job at all times, including the week of Driver Training and Orientation. Drivers are expected to be prompt, ready to start class every morning by 8 a.m., and wear appropriate work clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE). We’ll supply you with a pair of work gloves, a reflective vest, a hard hat and safety glasses. Make sure to bring your steel-toed boots and appropriate work clothes for the week, including jeans/long pants, long sleeve shirts and other weather-appropriate clothing. Prohibited items include, but are not limited to, sweatpants, flip flops, tank tops, torn/frayed clothing and items with words, terms or pictures that may be offensive to others.

After your training, you are ready to get on the road! Based on your experience level, you’ll either be seated in your own truck on Friday, ready to pick up your first load and head back home, or assigned to ride with one of PGT’s Certified PRO Trainers, learning from the very best in real-world scenarios before seating in your own unit.

Your Driver Recruiter will continue to stay in touch during your first few months, making sure you’re acclimating to life at PGT, and your Fleet Manager, Safety Manager and Training Staff are all available to you 24/7/365, supporting you every mile so that you are never alone on the road.

Welcome to the Family

Our extensive flatbed truck driver application process will ensure that PGT is the right fit for you. With PGT, you will be supported by a team of quality professionals committed to meeting your expectations. Five Ways Truck Drivers Benefit from Contract Rates https://www.pgttrucking.com/five-ways-truck-drivers-benefit-from-contract-rates/ Thu, 05 Jan 2023 17:47:03 +0000 https://www.pgttrucking.com/?p=8999 Flatbed truck drivers can benefit from PGT Trucking's direct customer freight at contract rates, providing stability in a down market.

]]>

The trucking industry is well known for its alternating periods of booms and busts, cycling through market changes every three to four years. It can be difficult for new truck drivers to effectively manage the economic highs and lows in order to achieve long-term success in the industry. When rates are high, truck drivers can easily take advantage of the spot market, but when rates decline, how can these same drivers continue earning a quality paycheck? At PGT Trucking, our flatbed truck drivers benefit from our direct customer freight at contracted rates, ensuring their revenue potential regardless of any market shifts.

Spot Rates vs. Contract Rates

Spot rates are quoted within a few days of the planned shipment, accounting for current capacity, pricing and demand in the market. During periods of tight capacity and increased demand, spot rates will be high, raising the truck driver’s earning potential. When the market turns and demand drops, spot rates fall, limiting the driver’s profits, especially when operating costs remain high. Spot rates can change daily, making it difficult for carriers and truck drivers to financially plan for the months ahead. According to FreightWaves National Truckload Index, spot rates have declined 27.6% since the beginning of 2022, with continued rate slumps forecasted in 2023.

Unlike spot rates, contract rates are set in advance of multiple shipments, outlining the length of service, load volume and transport price agreed upon by the carrier and customer. A fuel surcharge may be added to the contracted rate, accounting for any diesel fuel price changes at the time of the actual shipment. Most contract rates are valid for the course of an entire project or set on an annual basis, and because contract rates fluctuate less frequently than spot rates, carriers, truck drivers and customers have added stability.

The Power of Relationships

With contract rates, carriers, like PGT, develop strong relationships with their customers, helping their truck drivers benefit from better communication, increased efficiency and improved quality control. PGT’s Operations Management ensures consistent, safe and reliable service for our customers, resulting in constant, steady work for our drivers. Many PGT truck drivers run the same lanes each week, developing their own relationships with our customers to strengthen PGT’s business connections. These mutually-beneficial partnerships improve over time, and shippers are more likely to contact their most trusted carriers to handle any priority shipments, valuable loads or increased freight volume.

With spot rates, shippers are focused on securing a one-time deal to immediately move their freight at the lowest cost. Without the backing of a quality business relationship, carriers are left to negotiate on price alone. The winner of the spot market is usually the bidder with the lowest rate, which doesn’t always make it the safest, most reliable option. When rates are high, successful truck drivers can take advantage of the spot rate system, booking one load at a time with the instant benefit of a higher profit margin. As these rates inevitably decline over time, carriers and their truck drivers need to secure a strong customer base with contract rates in order to prevail in a down market.

PGT maintains an expansive network of direct customer freight, giving our flatbed truck drivers opportunities to succeed no matter how the market trends. For more than 40 years, our focus has been to build strong, personal relationships with our drivers and our customers, and through these relationships, we set favorable contract rates to benefit our Proud Professional truck drivers.

Five Benefits of Contract Rates for Flatbed Truck Drivers

  1. Reliable, steady work – Because 99% of PGT’s freight comes directly from our customers, we are not dependent on changing spot rates and broker boards. PGT has a steady flow of contracted freight all year long, giving our flatbed truck drivers consistent lanes to run each week. With our transparent percentage pay system, PGT drivers know their line haul revenue at the time of dispatch, adding to their financial security.
  2. Less detention time – Thanks to the strong relationships that PGT builds with our customers, we can limit a driver’s detention time at shipping and receiving facilities. Every seasoned truck driver knows that if the wheels aren’t turning, they’re not making money, and PGT understands that every minute counts. Our Operations team will work with our customers to let them know a driver’s planned arrival time, keeping the line moving to get them back on the road as quickly and as safely as possible.
  3. Fewer deadhead miles – At PGT, we have a dedicated Business Development Department committed to finding diverse freight options for our truck drivers at favorable rates. When PGT accepts a new lane at a contracted rate, our Business Development Managers are already working to identify additional customers along the way, ensuring that our flatbed truck drivers have freight to move in both directions with fewer deadhead miles.
  4. Increased freight volume – When shippers know the rates in advance, they can commit to providing more freight, and as the carrier-customer relationship develops, shippers will offer more loads, counting on their top carriers to handle any volume increases or priority shipments. PGT customers trust our safe and reliable service, giving our flatbed truck drivers plenty of freight to move.
  5. Potential for growth – When rates are down, truck drivers expand their routine driving area, exploring new lanes and different commodities to keep generating the same amount of revenue. With spot rates, it can be difficult to enter new territory – how will drivers know if they are setting a competitive market price? PGT’s Business Development Managers work behind the scenes every day to identify new freight opportunities and secure favorable contract rates, making sure our flatbed truck drivers have the potential revenue growth they need.

Make the Most with PGT Trucking

Join PGT and take advantage of our diverse freight options through contracted rates. We’ve been in business for more than 41 years, successfully operating through numerous market highs and lows. With PGT’s percentage pay model, our flatbed truck drivers have the ability to earn more when the rates are high while still benefiting from the stability of contract rates with PGT’s top customers.

On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, an armistice went into effect in 1918, signaling the end of World War I. Today, 104 years later, we honor the 41 million men and women who have served in the United States military, observing the historical significance of November 11. Each year, Veterans Day is an opportunity for us to thank America’s veterans for their service, dedication and sacrifice, and PGT Trucking values and appreciates the commitment these men and women have shown to our country. Today, and every day, we thank you for your service.

THE SKILLS TO SUCCEED

After active duty, veterans must start their transition back to civilian life. They are faced with starting over, finding a new home, a new purpose, and a new career. While service members spend years honing their skills within their specialized occupation, they are often left wondering how to apply those skills to a job once they’re out of the military. The transition phase can be one of the most difficult tasks for a veteran to manage, but a career in trucking can provide immediate opportunities for those with a military background.

For James Delwiche, PGT Manager, Breakdown, he used his experience as a diesel mechanic in the United States Marine Corps to help guide his career path in transportation. James joined PGT after serving eight years, including two deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. James has been able to use his knowledge as a diesel mechanic to help PGT drivers get back on the road quickly, but the military provided James with more than just a mechanical background.

“Through the Marine Corps, I learned to be disciplined, to adapt to any situation, and to perform my duties with a sense of urgency,” says James. “These qualities have helped me succeed at PGT, especially in the Maintenance Department.”

Approximately 10% of employed veterans currently work in transportation. As James mentioned, veterans have an aptitude for trucking—their discipline, hard work ethic and overall adaptability helps them to be successful, building long, prosperous careers in the industry. PGT Company Driver Clifford Heaton believes that the meticulous nature of the military also plays a part in helping flatbed truck drivers stay safe on the road.

“In the military, you must pay attention to every little detail,” states Cliff. “There are lives at stake if you don’t, and that applies to truck driving as well. You have to stay focused on the road to keep everyone around you safe.”

Cliff served in the United States Air Force for 10 years, traveling through 26 countries during his military career. He now drives for PGT as a Million Mile Safe Driver and a Premier Professional, an elite fleet of PGT drivers who maintain high performance and safety standards at all times.

David Brainard, PGT Company Driver, has been able to apply his extensive route planning experience in the United States Army to flatbed truck driving. David served in the Army for 11 years as a part of convoy operations, deploying to Iraq and Cuba during Operation Enduring Freedom, so trip planning as a flatbed truck driver came naturally to him. David has built upon his success at PGT to become a Certified PRO Trainer, tasked with training PGT’s newest drivers the flatbed trucking basics, including effective trip planning. David has found his true calling at PGT, recently being named as PGT’s Certified PRO Trainer of the Year for 2021.

“PGT is a great company for veterans,” states David. “PGT’s values reflect the same military qualities that we veterans all share, and you can build a prosperous career here.”

THE SUPPORT YOU NEED

Cody Kastelic, PGT Manager, Load Center, completed a four-year service in the United States Air Force as an Air Transportation Specialist, even taking part in the presidential detail. After the Air Force, Cody decided to advance his logistics career and join PGT. Like James, Cliff and David, Cody has found success in the trucking industry due to the similarities between the military and transportation.

“In the Air Force and at PGT, everything is very structured, and communication is critical,” says Cody. “There’s a comradery here that makes it easy to fit in and perform well.”

That comradery has led to other veterans considering a career in transportation, like Jarrett Shreffler, PGT Carrier Relations Representative. Jarrett served in the United States Marines Corps for four years as a canine handler, spending time assigned to the United States Secret Service. After the military, Jarrett briefly attended college classes, but he was unsure of his civilian career path. Jarrett met Cody at a local career fair, talking about their similar military backgrounds, and because of their conversation, Jarrett decided to enter the trucking industry.

“The Marine Corps helped me learn to adapt to unforeseen situations,” states Jarrett. “Transportation is very similar to the military in that both fields are constantly changing, so I was able to easily transition into this new role and be successful.”

Fellow Marine Steven Michener, PGT Company Driver, also recognizes the bond that military veterans share, especially for truck drivers out on the road. Steve served in the United States Marine Corps for five years as a diesel mechanic, spending time at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms. Steve has been with PGT since 2004, being recognized as a 10 Year Safe Driver and member of our Premier Professional fleet, and he is entrusted with driving the PGT Pittsburgh Panthers truck to Pitt’s football games.

“Veterans look out for each other,” notes Steve. “It’s an admirable trait, and it never goes away. We have a strong sense of community within the trucking industry.”

THANK YOU

Richard Blinkiewicz, PGT Company Driver, has never shied away from hard work. Richard served in the United States Navy for four years as a mechanic, spending two and a half years on a submarine tender outside of Spain. Richard worked on various equipment in the Navy, including cranes that loaded nuclear missiles into submarines, and he applied the basic mechanical skills he learned to his civilian career, always turning a wrench in some capacity. Richard joined PGT in 1997, and he has had a successful trucking career. As he prepares for his retirement from the truck (he will still be keeping busy at home), Richard has some advice for the next generation of drivers.

“Take care of yourself, eat right and take the time to do the right things,” advises Richard. “This is hard, yet rewarding, work, and your body will thank you in the future.”

At PGT, 8% of our corporate employees and 7% of our drivers are military veterans. We are proud of their service, and we support our veterans all year long. Thank you to James, Cliff, David, Cody, Jarrett, Steven, Richard and all PGT drivers and employees who have served our country!

CONSIDER A TRANSPORTATION CAREER TODAY

With the current truck driver shortage, veterans can enter the transportation industry right away without spending years pursuing higher education. There are multiple resources available to help veterans start a career in trucking, including options to waive CDL test requirements based on verified military experience. The GI Bill can even help cover the cost of CDL training, keeping veterans debt-free.

PGT has open positions for Company Drivers, Lease Purchase Operators, Owner-Operators, and Corporate Careers. Contact us today to get started and apply now!

Driver-to-Driver Perspective: Four Keys to Lease Purchase Success https://www.pgttrucking.com/four-keys-to-lease-purchase-success/ Fri, 28 Oct 2022 13:18:49 +0000 https://www.pgttrucking.com/?p=8926 PGT Trucking asks their own Lease Purchase Drivers for advice on what you need to know before entering a lease-to-own agreement.

The post Driver-to-Driver Perspective: Four Keys to Lease Purchase Success appeared first on PGT Trucking.

]]>

Have you ever dreamed of owning your truck? Are you unsure of where to begin? For drivers interested in truck ownership, partnering with a major carrier who offers a quality lease purchase program, like PGT Trucking, can be a great way to get started. We asked our own Lease Purchase Drivers for their advice, giving you a driver-to-driver perspective on what you need to know before entering a lease-to-own agreement.

Deshontae Bean entered PGT’s Lease Purchase Program in October 2021, and he has quickly become one of our top revenue earners. Deshontae credits his success to partnering with the right trucking company and being disciplined as a small business owner. His goal is to work toward owning a small fleet, expanding PGT’s presence in the Southeast.

Steve Dowler has been with PGT since April 2015, using our Lease Purchase Program multiple times to help grow his own fleet. Steve already owns seven trucks with his business partner, and they hope to start bringing in their own customers as well, eventually becoming an Integrated Fleet Partner with PGT.

REMEMBER, IT’S A BUSINESS

While most truck drivers dream of being their own boss, not everyone is suited to running a business. As an Owner-Operator, you’re responsible for maintenance costs, fuel expenses, tolls, insurance, taxes and more. In order to be successful as an independent driver, you need to stay focused and maintain a business mindset. Deshontae believes in picking up the extra load on Friday to make the most out of his weekly revenue.

“You have to set yourself up for a Monday delivery,” says Deshontae. “Those weekly deductions add up, so every bit of revenue helps offset your ownership costs.”

By partnering with a major carrier like PGT, you will have our full support and a variety of resources to help you successfully transition to truck ownership. Our Lease Purchase Manager will guide you through your truck payments and monthly expenses, helping you stay on track financially during your entire lease. We also offer discounts on fuel, parts and tires, file state road and fuel taxes on your behalf, and provide flexible financing options with no balloon payments. PGT’s Lease Purchase Program is designed to help you succeed, and once your truck is paid off, we’ll still be here to support you as an Owner-Operator.

Steve also recommends that Lease Purchase Drivers hire qualified professionals for their financial needs, including tax preparation, account management and investment planning.

“Don’t try to do everything by yourself,” advises Steve. “Working with a professional will actually help you meet your financial goals faster and ensure your legal requirements are handled properly.”

EXPERIENCE IS KEY

Both Steve and Deshontae stress the importance of gaining experience as a company truck driver before entering a lease purchase agreement.

Deshontae compares the trucking industry to his service in the United States Marine Corps. New recruits are only tasked with learning the military’s standard operations, and they are not given the opportunity to advance until they’ve mastered the basic processes first. This same approach can be applied to a truck driving career.

“Lease purchase candidates should focus on the trucking basics and learn how to be a successful truck driver first,” says Deshontae. “Once they have that solid foundation, they can start learning the business aspects of truck ownership.”

Steve believes prospective lease purchase drivers can also benefit from working as a company driver, gaining a firsthand look at how a company operates before entering a long-term deal.

“When you enter a lease purchase agreement, the business side will be completely new to you,” states Steve. “If you’re already familiar with the company, it will be easier to succeed in their lease purchase program.”

Like Steve and Deshontae, PGT knows there is a lot for prospective lease purchase operators to learn, which is why we require at least one year of driving experience for our Lease Purchase Program. No experience? No problem! Start with PGT as a Company Driver, and we will support your career growth through our Lease Purchase Program when you’re ready.

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION MATTERS

Behind every successful truck driver is a great fleet manager/dispatcher. At PGT, we know the power of a quality Driver-Fleet Manager relationship, and we aim to keep our driver-to-manager ratio low, around 25-1. Our Fleet Managers are responsible for more than just dispatch. For PGT Drivers, a Fleet Manager is their primary advocate at the company, not only working to find them the best lanes and freight available, but to also listen to their needs, build personal relationships and coach them toward success.

As a Lease Purchase Operator, you’re going to experience some challenges along the way, but if you have a positive relationship with your Fleet Manager, you can stay focused and get back on the road quickly. Deshontae knows the importance of effective communication in a strong Lease Purchase Program.

“You can’t be afraid to voice your opinion,” states Deshontae. “If there’s something you need, ask. Your Fleet Manager will work with you to ensure you reach your full potential.”

USE YOUR RESOURCES

Truck ownership can be intimidating, but with the right company, like PGT, you will have the resources and support you need to achieve your business goals. In addition to your Fleet Manager and Lease Purchase Manager, you have full access to company specialists for your payroll questions, tech support, compliance concerns and more. PGT’s Operations, Safety, Risk and Training Departments are available to you 24/7, ensuring that you have round-the-clock support no matter where you are.

For new Lease Purchase Operators, efficiently managing equipment expenses and repairs can be challenging, but with PGT, we will guide you through the process to get you back on the road and quickly earning revenue again. PGT offers comprehensive maintenance solutions, including 24/7 roadside assistance and access to over 850 shops across the U.S.

Steve knows that in order to be successful in Lease Purchase, you need to use your resources.

“Call your Fleet Manager, reach out to the departments at PGT, talk to other drivers, whatever you need to do,” says Steve. “You can’t do this on your own, but if you take advantage of these opportunities, you will become a truck owner.”

PGT is proud of our Lease Purchase Program, helping truck drivers achieve their independence and grow their business. Considering a career as an owner-operator/independent contractor? With the ever increasing demand for truck drivers, there has never been a better time to start your own business as an independent contractor.

Do you want:

  • To own your own truck

  • Flexibility and freedom

  • Increased earning potential

As an independent contractor, you will own and run your business, so it’s important to partner with a company who will help you succeed.

The main things to consider when transitioning from a company driver to an independent contractor truck driver

  • Running a business – As an independent contractor, you will face an entirely new set of tasks that were previously handled by your employer, like managing cash flow, keeping tax records and filing permits. You’ll also be responsible for maintenance costs, new equipment and other business-related expenses. By partnering with a major carrier like PGT, owner-operators can get the support they need to help run their business while maintaining their independence.

  • Start up funds – When making the transition to being an independent contractor, one of the most common questions is “How do I move from a Company Driver to an Owner-Operator without breaking the bank by purchasing my own truck?” Consider working with a company that has a proven lease purchase program.

  • Career goals – Are you looking to own your own truck? Do you dream of owning your own fleet or even starting an agency terminal? Working with a major carrier can help you meet your career goals.

  • Support – Owner-Operators have to find their freight, secure their loads and drive safely for hundreds of miles, all while trying to grow their business. They can find the business support they need through another trucking company, but it’s important to partner with a carrier that supports your independence and wants to help you meet your goals.

The main benefits of partnering with PGT as an independent contractor

  • Maintain your freedom – PGT understands that you want to run your business, so our Owner-Operator program focuses on giving you the support and assistance you need while still respecting your freedom as an independent contractor.

  • Increased earning potential – Independent contractors make more money per load through the percentage pay model. At PGT, our owner-operators earn 75% of the Line Haul Revenue. Partnering with PGT also gives you access to our strong freight network, diverse customer base and dedicated support team.

  • Support – PGT works with each individual driver to develop a customized program to ensure their success. We have an Owner-Operator Advocate who will focus on the corporate side of the business so that our independent contractors can stay on the road making money. Independent contractors also have 24/7 access to their Fleet Managers and Safety Teams for ongoing support.

  • Home time – PGT understands that you want to maximize your earning potential while still getting home for the weekend soccer game. We’ll work with your schedule so you can be home for your family.

  • Lease purchase – PGT has late model equipment available for our lease purchase program, and our trucks are never purchased from an auction. Our custom financing options will help you on the path to truck ownership without breaking the bank.

  • Maintenance support – Through PGT’s vast network, Independent Contractors can take advantage of our top-tier maintenance support to limit their downtime. We’ll get you back on the road quickly so you can continue making money.

“PGT is very family-oriented, and they take really great care of their drivers. They want to see their drivers succeed and do well. We are all out on the road for one reason – we are trying to provide for our families and give them the best life possible.”
    – Justin Shea, Independent Contractor and Agency Terminal Manager with PGT
  • Benefits – PGT offers access to healthcare programs along with discounts on parts, tires and fuel.

  • Incentive Programs – Contractors are eligible for various incentive programs including referral bonuses, recognition of service years and safety awards.

“PGT’s compensation and incentive programs are one of the best in the industry. When talking with incoming Independent Contractors, it is one of the items that sets us apart from other trucking companies.”
    – Kacy Odom, PGT Senior Recruiter-Independent Contractor Development

With the national truck driver shortage, the demand for truck drivers is at an all time high. The American Trucking Association estimated that in 2021, the shortage hit a historic high of over 80,000 drivers. There are more job opportunities than ever before, and one of the most lucrative careers in the transportation industry is that of a flatbed truck driver.

Flatbed trucking has higher average pay than dry van trucking due to the additional physical requirements and expertise needed to properly secure a loaded commodity. A flatbed truck driver doesn’t just drive the truck from point A to point B—they are on the trailer securing and tarping their cargo to ensure it doesn’t move in transit, and then they get in the cab to drive to their destination.

At PGT Trucking, we use the percentage pay model to pay our drivers, which offers even more benefits over the typical dry van rate per mile pay scale. The majority of PGT’s company fleet averages 27% of the line haul revenue, which means our drivers are paid more for their efforts.

What is work like for the flatbed truck driver?

Flatbed trucks have an open trailer, so drivers can haul larger and heavier cargo than a dry or refrigerated van. Flatbed truck drivers will transport items such as steel coils, building materials, lumber, shingles, pipe and more.

Some key aspects of flatbed trucking are:

  • Load Securement: Because commodities are hauled on an open trailer, they must be properly secured so they will not move in transit. Load securement prevents the cargo from moving and keeps the driver, the commodity and other motorists safe. At PGT, you will have thorough training and ongoing support to make sure you succeed in load securement.

  • Tarping: Flatbed trailers do not have walls or a roof. Heavy duty tarps are used to protect the commodity from the elements and debris. Once the load is secured, tarps are added and secured to protect the load and stay in place during transit.

  • Equipment: Flatbed truck drivers use various types of equipment to secure their loads. PGT provides our company drivers with standard equipment like straps, chains, binders, tarps, dunnage and coil racks, and you’ll learn how to use everything properly during your orientation and training.

What are the major advantages of a career in flatbed trucking?

  • Higher Average Pay: Flatbed truck driving is a financially rewarding career, and in 2021, PGT’s average pay for first year drivers was almost $73,000, compared to an industry average pay of $59,000 for all truck drivers.

  • Opportunities for Specialty Loads: Driving in the flatbed industry gives truckers opportunities for transporting unique cargo, and there are opportunities to haul even more specialized loads, like oversized/overweight commodities or HAZMAT/liquid gasses.

  • Rewarding Career: Flatbed trucking is a challenging yet mentally satisfying job that will provide you with a rewarding career. Drivers regularly apply their skills and knowledge to a variety of tasks, and no two loads are the same. Through flatbed trucking, you will be actively engaged on a daily basis and end your days feeling accomplished.

What do you need to get started in the flatbed trucking industry?

To drive a flatbed truck, you need to obtain a Class A CDL. PGT welcomes drivers from all experience levels, so whether you’re a true veteran or a pure student, we will set you up for success.

What should you look for in a flatbed trucking company job?

Now is a Great Time to Start Your Professional Driving Career

Trucking Industry by the Numbers (U.S.)

  • There is a shortage of roughly 80,000 truck drivers.[1]
  • The number of unfilled trucking jobs is expected to double by 2030.[1]
  • The average commercial truck driver in the U.S. is 48 years old.[2]
  • Approximately 72.5% of all freight in the U.S. is moved via truck.[3]

Reasons for the Truck Driver Shortage

  • Aging Workforce: Many current drivers are approaching retirement age, and companies aren’t able to replenish their workforce fast enough.
  • Supply Chain Issues: Increasing demand for products has overwhelmed the capacity of the supply chain and has pressured the transportation industry to solve these logistical issues.
  • Driver Stereotypes: Contrary to popular belief, truck driving is an elite profession made up of men and women who are smart, talented and dedicated. Drivers are routinely drug/alcohol tested, follow strict safety regulations and meet the physical demands of the job.

Why Consider a Flatbed Driving Career with PGT Trucking?

  • Availability of Jobs: With the current truck driver shortage, there are always open positions for professional flatbed drivers, truck technicians and office personnel.
  • High Paying Career: Due to tight capacity, drivers are making more money than ever before. In 2021, first year drivers averaged an astounding $73,000. Top earners brought in over six figures!
  • It’s a Driver’s Market: Candidates can find any type of job to meet their needs, whether that’s local, regional, long haul or specific freight.
  • Rapid Career Growth: Candidates can start as a Company Driver and quickly work their way through our Lease Purchase program, eventually becoming an Independent Contractor with their own fleet.
Truck driving is a lucrative career where people can provide for their families and satisfy a craving for adventure. With industry demands higher than ever before, there are plenty of opportunities to get started. Ditch the 9-5 desk job and take part in this essential industry!

At PGT, we cycle our equipment over a four year period of time. At the end of four years, we complete a full assessment on our equipment. We may choose to offer trucks in our Lease Purchase Program if they have low mileage and are mechanically sound.

We know that in order to recruit and retain the best professional flatbed truck drivers we need to have new equipment, so that’s exactly what we do. Our truck drivers can rely on late model equipment, which helps us achieve the highest level of success and safety.

4 – Respect

“I talk to drivers on a regular basis. Usually, if they have a problem, they call me and I try to put them in touch with the right people. I still have relationships with [drivers] going back to 1981. I think you have to understand the job that they are doing, how difficult the job is and today I have a better understanding of what is required with the professional driver… PGT is like a family because we care.”

  • Pat Gallagher, CEO/Founder, PGT Trucking

PGT is family, plain and simple. You are not a truck number. You are a name, a face, and a valued member of our team.

We know truckers provide essential services to our country, undergo extensive training, and work hard to provide a good lifestyle for their families. They deserve to be treated fairly.

At PGT, what we say and what we do are one in the same. We do not say one thing to get drivers in the door and then do another once they are here. Transparency is KEY to showing drivers respect.

Our experienced management team respects your time and works with reliable customers to ensure you are moving and making money. Your safety is a priority each and every day.

5 – Support & Training

PGT offers extensive training and support for our truck drivers. Even if you are a flatbed truck driver with 20 years of experience, we want to make sure you have the knowledge and tools to be successful at PGT.

Each and every driver will receive a customized training program. Our training program gets you behind the wheel and on the road with one of our Certified PRO Trainers. Our instructors are experienced CDL drivers with over 100 years of combined experience.

At PGT, we believe in “practicing what you preach.” Each week, PGT staff from the Operations, Maintenance, Compliance/Safety/Risk, Sales, Recruiting, and Load Center Departments head to the Blairsville training facility to take part in a two-day training program, learning the fundamentals of load securement, both in the classroom and hands-on in the warehouse. To properly support our drivers, this training helps corporate staff members gain a better understanding of what our Proud Professionals encounter on the road each day. Our drivers have support 24/7/365.

If you are looking to build experience in the flatbed trucking industry, you won’t get better training, orientation, and ongoing support than what we offer at PGT.

Cole Welham, General Manager, Liedtka Logistics; Carol Walla, Site Manager, Gary; Sebastian Wagner, Fleet Manager; and Katie Rousseau, Assistant Breakdown Manager took part in our Flatbed 101 training in Blairsville, PA.

“This training was extremely beneficial! You hear about what the drivers do each day, but as an office staff member, you do not realize all that they have to go through to secure the commodity on their trailer. I believe everyone should take part in Flatbed 101 to experience what a driver encounters out on the road. I appreciate our drivers so much more after this experience!” – Katie Rousseau

YOUR GUIDE FOR PERCENTAGE PAY TRUCK DRIVING JOBS

Here at PGT Trucking, we feel strongly that the percentage pay model is the most beneficial way to pay drivers. The majority of PGT Trucking company fleet averages 27% of the line haul revenue!

We pride ourselves on a transparent, fair pay system, and PGT drivers know what their pay will be for each load, every time one is assigned.

Percentage Pay vs Mileage Pay

  • Percentage Pay lets you make MORE money when freight rates are upWith Percentage Pay, drivers make a consistent percentage of the freight cost, and with the overwhelming demand for professional truck drivers, shipping rates are projected to continue to rise. Also, trucking jobs that pay by percentage allow you to take advantage of seasonal upswings in the market, like the holiday season. You will get paid more when your carrier gets paid more. Mileage Pay will pay you the same cents per mile year-round, even when the carrier is charging customers more.
  • With Percentage Pay truck driving jobs, drivers know how much they are getting paid before they pick up the loadWith mileage pay, your truck’s Electronic Logging Device (ELD) will record the actual miles you have driven. But, if the dispatcher has only allowed for you to be paid by the short miles (shortest distance along the necessary route), you may not be paid for the actual, practical miles you drove in order to take the fastest route. When your GPS asks you “Shortest route or Fastest Route,” which do you choose? You don’t want the scenic route, you want the highway! The same applies to flatbed trucking jobs.
  • Percentage Pay has the most potential for income growthFlatbed trucking jobs with Percentage Pay have higher potential for income growth because carriers will be charging customers more each year for the same trips and you will also receive that benefit. With a Mileage Pay job, your cents per mile rate may only increase by one cent or so per year.
  • With Percentage Pay you know you are getting paid fairlyWith Mileage Pay, you know your cents per mile rate and the number of miles you have driven, but will the company give you credit for the full miles or only their “short miles” allowance? If there’s a big difference between your actual miles and the allowed miles, you will not be making as much as you expected!

Trucking jobs with Percentage Pay give you full transparency and you know that your pay is accurate, as long as your company shares with you the rated Bill of Lading.

  • With Percentage Pay you get paid more for valuable loads. With Percentage Pay you will earn more if the truck earns more. If you are involved with a time sensitive delivery, for example, that delivery cost will also be higher. When you are paid by the percentage, if the rates increase then your pay increases.
Highest Paying percentage pay trucking company

PGT Trucking is committed to treating its drivers with integrity, just as we honor your hard-work and dedication to the job. We are invested in maintaining high-quality, safe flatbed transportation services and we want to develop, retain, and reward quality employees. Our Percentage Pay program will reward you, our dedicated driver.

Top 3 Benefits of Percentage Pay https://www.pgttrucking.com/top-3-benefits-of-percentage-pay/ Mon, 01 Feb 2021 17:39:00 +0000 https://pgttrucking1.wpengine.com/?p=8642 For typical over-the-road drivers or owner/operators, the two most common methods are either mileage pay, or percentage pay. So what’s the difference?

The post Top 3 Benefits of Percentage Pay appeared first on PGT Trucking.

]]>

How would you prefer to be paid? Higher of course; but that question was rhetorical. For typical over-the-road drivers or owner/operators, the two most common methods are either mileage pay, or percentage pay.

So what’s the difference? Consider this example:

A customer needs a commodity hauled 1,236 miles and will pay $2,900 for the load to be moved.

  • Mileage Pay is simply what it implies. You are paid a certain dollar amount per mile that you drive. For example, if you are paid 56 cents per mile and you drive 1,236 miles, your pay would look like this:

.56 cents x 1236 miles = $692

  • Percentage Pay is based off a percentage the shipper paid to haul their load. Using the example above, if your percentage is 28% and the shipper paid $2,900 dollars for the load, your pay would look like:

$2,900 x .28 = $812

Now that you know the difference, let’s dive into the Top 3 Benefits of Percentage Pay.

1. No More Mileage Disputes

Whether you’re a new driver or an experienced one, the last thing you want to do is dispute with your employer over whether or not your miles and compensation are fair. Percentage pay is a more transparent, fair pay system. If the owner/operator happens to be one of those who drive excessive extra distances to use their favorite roads, the company doesn’t have to pay for these inefficiencies. As well, periodically, a load paying full freight won’t use up the whole trailer. A percentage paid driver is more likely to be agreeable to the time spent filling the trailer, because more of the additional revenue goes to him.

2. Rates Are Increasing

Based on the industry’s current freight rates, company drivers average approximately $55,000 per year at the starting rate of 25% of the line haul revenue. The percentage pay rate amount for a driver increases, based on tenure and experience with a company. In addition, with the overwhelming demand for professional drivers, shipping rates are projected to continue to increase. According to the October 2017 Kiplinger Report, forecasted trucking rates will grow 5% – 10% in 2018.

3. Statistics Show – Percentage Drivers Are Happier

Truck drivers who receive pay based on a percentage split — a fixed percent of the invoice charged to customers — are generally more satisfied with their jobs than those who are paid based on hourly or mileage pay, according to survey results released by Stay Metrics.

Stay Metrics surveyed more than 4,000 drivers from 31 different carriers.

Drivers receive pay on a percentage split indicated they were 31% more satisfied with their jobs than those who receive hourly pay and 29% more satisfied than those who receive per-mile pay.

In the survey, drivers who receive hourly and per-mile pay said they felt underpaid compared to the responses of drivers who are paid on a percentage split.

PGT Trucking stands firmly behind our pay program, as we feel this is the best way to reward our dedicated drivers. Apply now and find out more!
