PGT Trucking, Inc. President Gregg Troian Appointed to ATRI Board

Washington, DC – The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) has announced the appointment of Gregg Troian, PGT Trucking, Inc. President to its Board of Directors. Mr. Troian was appointed by ATRI Chairman of the Board Derek Leathers, Werner Enterprises Chairman and CEO.

Gregg Troian has more than 40 years of transportation experience, 38 of which have been spent at PGT Trucking, Inc. (PGT). Throughout his career, Gregg has held multiple roles in Operations, Business Development and Senior Leadership, including President and CEO of a large 3PL company. Gregg is a current member of the PGT Board of Directors and has played a major role in the growth and development of PGT. Gregg continues to lead the company through the Future of Flatbed® initiative, revolutionizing transportation with the use of innovative technology and zero-emissions equipment.

Gregg has held elected positions in local government in Western PA, and was the past Chairman of Family House, a non-profit organization providing temporary housing for patients with serious illnesses. Gregg was a member of the 2023-2024 ATRI Research Advisory Committee and a recipient of the 2022 Heavy Duty Trucking Truck Fleet Innovator Award. He also serves as Vice Chairman on Pennsylvania Governor’s Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee through the Pennsylvania Chamber of Commerce and the Ryder Carrier Advisory Board. U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson, Candidate Rob Mercuri Visit PGT Trucking

Aliquippa, PA, October 12, 2024 – PGT Trucking, Inc., a multi-service transportation firm offering flatbed, dedicated, international, sustainable and specialized solutions, were visited by Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and Rob Mercuri, congressional candidate for PA’s 17th Congressional District. Speaker Johnson and Mercuri stopped at PGT Trucking’s headquarters in Aliquippa on Friday to discuss the importance of the trucking industry in the November election.

The trucking industry provides one in 15 jobs in Pennsylvania, according to the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association and the American Transportation Research Institute. Truck drivers move an average of 414,630 tons per day in the state.

PGT Trucking, which was founded and headquartered in Beaver County, part of PA 17, since 1981, had the opportunity to showcase their impact on the local economy. The company employs over 200 employees and company drivers in the Pittsburgh region, with more than 600 staff and drivers nationwide, and partners with over 500 owner-operators and agents. Mercuri spoke to PGT Trucking’s staff, drivers and guests about the need to strengthen PA’s industrial roots.

“It is time to get Western PA and America back on track,” said Rob Mercuri, candidate for U.S. Congress. “We need to bring common sense back to Washington, and we need to bring jobs back to Western PA.”

Speaker Johnson also addressed the crowd of supporters, acknowledging the work ethic of truck drivers and PGT’s Proud Professionals.

“PGT is a great American company, showing the kind of grit, American know-how, and can-do spirit that we need to bring back to this country,” stated Speaker Johnson.

PGT Jackson was built in 2022 by KTS, offering truck parking, a maintenance shop, office space and restroom/shower facilities. This facility joins three other locations that PGT Trucking has opened this year, including Ghent, KY; Spartanburg, SC; and Laredo, TX. EXTENSIVE FLATBED TRAINING

These cameras allow PGT to monitor driving behavior and provide insight into real world driving experiences. We have a team of dedicated, CDL-holding driver coaches who review these camera systems and work with our drivers to encourage safer driving behavior. With this proactive approach, PGT can minimize the risk of an incident. This useful technology is revolutionizing fleet safety.

With this technology, our drivers can keep track of their camera scores, helping them focus on safe driving habits and improving their personal scores. Mageary, bringing more than 23 years of experience in the trucking industry, has effectively implemented maintenance programs designed to reduce costs, increase operational efficiencies and streamline overall asset management. Prior to joining PGT, Mageary worked as the VP of Maintenance for a 10,000+ truck carrier, focused on developing policies to drive business growth, strengthen vendor relationships and standardize operations.

PGT Trucking Expands Southwest Executive Team with New Vice President Appointment

“In this new position, Omar will elevate our international operations and expand our service offerings, aligning PGT’s capabilities with the rapid growth of Mexican manufacturing and establishing PGT as the leading transportation carrier for international freight,” said Gregg Troian, PGT Trucking President.

Davila earned his bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M International University and joins PGT Trucking with more than 16 years of experience in the transportation industry focused on international operations. He has extensive knowledge of international logistics and supply chain management, including a strong background in business development.

In May, PGT Trucking proudly announced the expansion of its Laredo operations, breaking ground on a new, state-of-the-art facility. PGT Trucking Implements the Industry’s First Dedicated Route Using Class 8 Zero-Emissions Equipment for Steel Dynamics

Pittsburgh, PA, August 2, 2023 – PGT Trucking, Inc., a leader in flatbed transportation, is excited to announce that they are the first in the flatbed industry to provide dedicated transportation services using a Class 8 zero-emissions truck to Steel Dynamics, one of the largest domestic steel producers and metals recyclers in North America.

The initial run took place on August 1, 2023, as PGT Trucking moved material between Steel Dynamics’ Pittsburgh’s galvanizing locations. This daily shuttle service marks a significant step forward in PGT Trucking’s commitment to sustainable and efficient transportation solutions.

“PGT Trucking is extremely proud to have successfully launched our first dedicated run for Steel Dynamics using Nikola’s Class 8 battery-electric vehicle,” said Gregg Troian, PGT Trucking President. “We are committed to providing our customers with innovative and sustainable transportation solutions, and this service offering will lead to a greener future for both the trucking and steel industries.”

Environmental sustainability is a key focus for the two companies, and this partnership allows PGT Trucking to transport Steel Dynamics’ products efficiently while minimizing environmental impact. It is estimated that a short-haul delivery made using this truck will eliminate PGT’s carbon emissions by more than 105,000 pounds annually. To support this partnership, Steel Dynamics installed a charging station at their MetalTech location for the battery-electric truck.

All PGT employees attend our Flatbed Fundamentals training, a two-day session at our Training Facility in Blairsville, PA. With a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on training, our staff gain basic knowledge about the rules, regulations, and policies of the trucking industry and PGT. Professionals from all departments attend Flatbed Fundamentals, and they even physically secure cargo in our Training Bay, using chains, binders, and other equipment to anchor loads on the trailer deck. PGT Trucking’s Guide to Pre- and Post-Trip Inspections

A proper pre- and post-trip inspection is what separates the average truck driver from a true professional! Federal law requires that a driver of a commercial motor vehicle completes an inspection every day on each vehicle operated (truck and/or trailer). More importantly, a thorough truck and trailer inspection helps truck drivers keep their equipment in safe working order, protecting everyone out on the road. Don’t skip your pre-trip! What is a pre-trip inspection?

A pre-trip inspection is a thorough check of the vehicle to ensure everything is in working order before you take off down the road. Flatbed truck drivers should check their tires, brakes, lights, engine fluid levels, securement (if loaded) and more. By completing a general observation of all equipment before leaving, flatbed truck drivers know their truck and trailer are safely ready for the day ahead.

When should I do a vehicle inspection?

Flatbed truck drivers at PGT are required to complete an inspection on their truck and trailer at the start of their day, at the end of their day, and any time they drop or hook to a different trailer. Walk around inspections and load checks should also be completed at every change of duty status (fueling, 30-minute break, loading, unloading, etc.).

Why should I do post-trip inspection?

A post-trip inspection will help a flatbed truck driver identify any defects that may have occurred since the pre-trip inspection. Any repairs that are needed can be addressed immediately instead of delaying the start of a driver’s next trip. For flatbed truck drivers who drop and hook, a post-trip inspection is common courtesy – don’t leave issues for the next driver to find. It’s not safe!

How long should a pre/post-trip inspection take?

A thorough pre/post-trip inspection should take about 15 minutes to complete. It doesn’t take long, but it will save a flatbed truck driver valuable time in the long run. Don’t be stuck on the side of the road with a blown-out tire. Get any problems quickly addressed during the pre/post-trip inspection.

What is the goal of a pre/post-trip inspection?

The purpose of a pre/post-trip inspection is safety! When equipment fails over the road, it places the truck driver and other motorists at risk. By examining the vehicle at the start and end of a trip, flatbed truck drivers can catch any defects before they cause a bigger problem over the road.

If I find something wrong during my pre/post-trip inspection, what should I do?

Any defects in the truck or trailer must be noted on the Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR), and flatbed truck drivers should call the PGT maintenance hotline and their Fleet Manager. Any item considered out-of-service by the Department of Transportation (DOT) must be repaired immediately before the vehicle can move. Any defect that is not considered an out-of-service DOT violation must be repaired before that truck or trailer can be dispatched on another load. Drivers should not operate the vehicle if they feel it is in an unsafe condition or has any out-of-service defects!

What are the most common defects found during a pre/post-trip inspection?

At PGT, the most noted defects during a pre/post-trip inspection are related to the tires, brakes or lights. While all equipment should be reviewed for possible safety concerns, flatbed truck drivers should pay extra attention to these problem areas.

Do I need to wear any personal protective equipment (PPE) while doing a pre/post-trip inspection?

Yes! You should have your safety vest, gloves, appropriate footwear, goggles, and hard hat on while performing safety functions. Other tools for the inspection include a flashlight, tire depth gauge and tire pressure gauge.

Should I do a pre-trip inspection on my personal vehicle?

Yes! While it’s not legally required to do a pre-trip inspection, all non-commercial vehicles should still be routinely checked to confirm they are in good operating condition. It’s a great habit to get into, and for flatbed truck drivers, practice makes perfect. Do a pre-trip on every vehicle, every time!

How to Complete a Truck and Trailer Inspection

Step 1: Front of the Tractor

Complete a visual inspection. Are all numbers and stickers present and clearly visible? Is there any damage or visible leaks?
Open the hood and check all fluid levels and belt tension.

Step 2: Cab

Enter the cab and start the engine. Test the horns, inspect the windshield (is it dirty? – clean it!), check the seatbelt and fire extinguisher.
Is your ELD tablet securely mounted on the dash? Do you have all required documentation in the cab and readily accessible?

Step 3: Air and Lights

Turn the engine off. Press and hold the brakes, listening for any air leaks or drop in pressure.
Start the light check and observe all lights during your truck and trailer walk around.

Step 4: Left Front and Right Front Tractor

Check the tires, brakes, and hub oil levels and look for exhaust leaks.
When checking tires, check the air pressure, tread depth, sidewall, rims and lug nuts.
When checking brakes, look for any extreme wear, cracks, soaked/contaminated oil, broken springs or anything out of adjustment.

Step 5: Front of Trailer and Mid Tractor

Check the fuel cap.
Look at the catwalk, headache rack, and bulkhead. Is everything clear of debris? Is all equipment properly secured? Remember, bungee cords have no working load limit and should never be used to secure tarps, chains, binders, lumber or pipe stakes.

Step 6: Right Forward and Rear Drive Wheel Ends

Check both the inside and outside tires. Inspect the brakes, shocks and air lines.

Step 7: Rear of Tractor

Check the rear light panel.
Inspect the mud flaps.
Confirm the fifth wheel jaws are fully closed.

Step 8: Trailer Right Mid Inspection

Check the dolly legs, winches and straps.
Check the lights down the trailer.
Check your load securement!

Step 9: Trailer Right Forward and Rear Wheel Ends

Check hub oil and grease levels.
Look at the inside and outside rims and tires.
Check the brakes, shocks and air lines.
Drain trailer air tanks.

Step 10: Rear of Trailer

Check the lights and mud flaps.
Confirm the DOT tape is visible.
Look for any damages to the ICC bumper.

Step 11: Trailer Left Forward and Rear Wheel Ends

Check hub oil and grease levels.
Look at the inside and outside rims and tires.
Check the brakes, shocks and air lines.
Drain trailer air tanks.

Step 12: Trailer Left Mid Inspection

Check the dolly legs, winches and straps.
Check the lights down the trailer.
Check your load securement!
Confirm the inspection, registration and insurance.

Step 13: Tractor Left Forward and Rear Driver Wheel

Check both the inside and outside tires. Inspect the brakes, shocks and air lines.
Check the rear light panel.
Inspect the mud flaps.
Confirm the fifth wheel jaws are fully closed.

Step 14: Tractor Left Mid and Trailer Front

Check the driver stairs.
Inspect the bulkhead and headache rack.
Drain the tractor air tanks.

PGT Trucking Appoints New Vice President, Managed Projects

Aliquippa, PA, June 27, 2023 – PGT Trucking, Inc., a multi-service transportation firm offering flatbed, dedicated, international and specialized services, announces the promotion of Bill Hershey to Vice President, Managed Projects, effective July 1.

In this new role, Bill will expand his responsibilities in managing complex site deliveries and ensuring reliable and safe transportation services for our customers.

Bill has been a member of the PGT family for 18 years, most recently serving as the Director, Project Cargo Management.

He has decades of engineering and project management experience, including analyzing, designing, and implementing the processes and equipment necessary to enhance product quality, improve efficiency, and reduce lead-time. At PGT, he has contributed to some of the company’s largest moves and most notable projects to date, including the Ethylene Cracker Plant in Beaver County, PA.

“Bill leads with a vision that embraces innovation, collaboration, and unwavering dedication to our customers,” said Gregg Troian, PGT Trucking President. “Under his direction, PGT will continue to deliver seamless transportation solutions, foster sustainability, and focus on safety.”

Bill earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University and his Master of Business Administration from Cleveland State University.

BRANDENBURG, KY, May 25, 2023 – PGT Trucking, Inc., a leader in flatbed transportation, delivered its inaugural shipment of low-greenhouse-gas steel via Nikola’s Class 8 battery-electric vehicle from Nucor’s new Brandenburg, KY, plant to a nearby fabricator, as part of its sustainable shipping solutions program.

To commemorate this first-ever shipment of low GHG intensity steel by a Class 8 zero-emissions truck, the companies welcomed team members, media and local officials to Nucor Brandenburg for a behind-the-scenes look at the sustainable equipment and commodities that are transforming the steel and transportation industries.

“PGT Trucking is proud to partner with companies like Nikola and Nucor who share a common vision and commitment to a greener future,” said Gregg Troian, PGT Trucking President. “We are confident that these relationships will help guide PGT’s Future of Flatbed^® initiatives, allowing us to reach our goal of a 35% reduction in emissions of our company-owned equipment by the year 2025.”

Participants heard formal presentations from Troian; Nikola Global Head, FCEV Market Development Jason Roycht; Nucor EVP of Plate & Structural Products Al Behr; and Nucor Steel Brandenburg GM Johnny Jacobs. Attendees were then taken on a guided and interactive tour of the Nikola Class 8 battery-electric semi-truck and charging station.

“For more than five decades, Nucor has been built on the sustainable model of producing steel with a low carbon footprint,” stated Behr. “Even though we are one of the cleanest steelmakers in the world, we know we need to continue to lower our greenhouse gas intensity. This partnership with PGT and Nikola is just one example of the innovative ways Nucor is working to reduce its carbon emissions.”

Nucor has installed charging stations at multiple mills, including Brandenburg, to enable the use of battery electric flatbed trucks. It is estimated that a short haul delivery made using this truck will reduce carbon emissions by 40% and create a 20% savings in energy cost, per trip.

According to a study by the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE), if 50% of the heavy-duty regional haul tractors were replaced with battery electric trucks, the industry could save an estimated 29.4 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent annually.

“Nikola is proud to partner with PGT Trucking to play a role in Nucor’s inaugural shipment of low GHG intensity steel with our Class 8 Tre battery-electric truck,” said Roycht. “This level of teamwork between product manufacturer, transportation provider, and vehicle manufacturer is exactly what it will take to evolve the industry to zero-emission trucking. Laredo, TX, May 11, 2023 – PGT Trucking Inc., a multi-service transportation firm offering flatbed, dedicated, international and specialized services, broke ground this week to mark the start of the construction for their new state of the art logistics center in Laredo, Texas.

Leading the groundbreaking ceremony at the 7.73-acre site within the Pinnacle Industry Center was Gloria Solis, Laredo Chamber of Commerce Board Member. PGT Trucking company representatives, local government officials and business leaders were in attendance.

“On behalf of PGT Trucking, and our partnerships with Park Avenue Construction, Kraus Development and the Laredo

Chamber of Commerce, we are excited for our expansion in Laredo, and support the continued development of this city and the surrounding areas,” said Pat Gallagher, PGT Trucking CEO.

With an expected completion date of Q1 2024, the custom facility will include a full-service operations center, modern driver amenities and a truck maintenance shop, providing a regional base for over 70 local drivers.

The annual PMTA Fleet Safety Awards, presented in association with Great West Casualty Company, recognizes motor carriers for their safe vehicle operations, based on verifiable data from the previous year. Participants must submit an application to report all mileage and Department of Transportation (DOT) reported accidents from domiciled fleet vehicles in Pennsylvania, and winners are announced at the yearly PMTA Membership Conference in April. PGT’s Truck Parking Tools: Helping Our Drivers Stay Safe on the Road

For nearly a decade, the lack of available truck parking has ranked as a Top 5 Industry Issue by the American Transportation Research Institute. Every truck driver knows that after a long day out on the road, the last thing they want to do is struggle to find a safe space to park for the night. PGT Trucking understands the frustration of these essential workers, providing our flatbed truck drivers with truck parking tools to stay safe on the road.

Estimates roughly equate one truck parking space for every 11 drivers, based on the Federal Highway Administration 2019 Jason’s Law survey. Every day, truck drivers are forced to stop working early in order to secure a safe parking spot, leaving valuable driving hours on the table and delaying shipment times. Lack of truck parking poses a serious safety issue, with a number of truck drivers resorting to park along the side of the road or making their own parking spot in a risky area. Some truck drivers have chosen to leave the industry rather than deal with the daily struggle, and potential newcomers may even be discouraged from entering trucking altogether.

Trucking companies, commercial truck stops, and state and federal governments need to join forces to implement real solutions for our drivers out on the road. Despite recent bipartisan efforts, truck parking remains a top issue for America’s truck drivers. PGT is committed to taking action now, providing immediate relief for our flatbed truck drivers while continuing to advocate for industry improvements.

Trip Planning

An effective trip plan is the best way for a truck driver to improve their utilization, reduce stress and generate consistent revenue. By mapping out their route and planned stops in advance, professional truck drivers can anticipate their exact location at the end of the day, helping them to schedule deliveries and locate parking. A good trip plan includes a Plan A, Plan B, Plan C and other contingencies, ensuring that the truck driver is prepared for whatever may happen along the way. Freight bottlenecks in the U.S. are estimated to cost the trucking industry 1.2 billion hours of productivity annually. The success of a truck driver relies on their ability to navigate congested areas, manage their Hours of Service requirements and search through limited parking facilities, all part of an effective trip plan.

Trip planning helps truck drivers maximize their driving time, leading to increases in utilization and revenue. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) sets Hours of Service regulations for commercial motor vehicles, stating that truck drivers can only drive a maximum of 11 hours per day within a 14 hour on-duty window. Truck drivers must also take a 30-minute break from driving after 8 hours, and of course, they must add in time to stop for fuel, food, restrooms and securement checks, not to mention any possible delays from traffic congestion, construction zones or detours. With an effective trip plan, truck drivers can identify their stops, breaks and parking needs along their route, helping them to make the most out of their HOS clock.

During PGT’s Training and Orientation, all driver candidates go through multiple sessions dedicated to trip planning. Because our Training Instructors are experienced CDL-holders, our drivers will learn from the men and women who have been through it all before, helping them anticipate and plan for every possible scenario. New drivers also receive extensive coaching from their Mentors and Certified PRO Trainers, continuing to build this essential skill in real world applications. Parking Assistance with PGT Trucking

Trip planning is a skill developed over time, so after training, new drivers may still need help scheduling their week, and even seasoned flatbed truck drivers may run into an unforeseen issue over the road. That’s why PGT offers a parking assistance service to our Proud Professionals. We have dedicated personnel on staff to help our truck drivers locate safe parking locations as a part of their normal trip planning routine. Using the latest tools and technology, our staff can quickly search an area to locate safe, trusted parking locations at major truck stops and PGT terminals, communicating these options to our flatbed truck drivers out on the road.

Thanks to PGT’s direct customer freight, our truck drivers consistently travel within the same areas, helping them become familiar with the lane and learn the best stopping points along the way. We also work closely with our customers to provide parking resources for our truck drivers when there might not be adequate facilities nearby. Through these strong personal relationships, we can provide additional resources to help our flatbed truck drivers.

Flatbed Trucking Basics: Everything You Need to Know

The flatbed trucking market is valued at $19 billion, and industry demand remains high, with the current national load-to-truck flatbed ratio averaging 15.68 loads per truck compared to 2.02 loads per truck in the dry van segment. As the U.S. heads into spring, flatbed trucking carriers expect a seasonal upswing, hauling building materials, agricultural equipment, landscaping supplies and more. Flatbed trucks are a vital component of the U.S. supply chain, so let’s review the basics, giving you everything you need to know for a job in flatbed trucking.

What is flatbed trucking?

Flatbed trucking involves hauling an open deck trailer, a “flatbed,” that doesn’t have any walls like a dry van or box trailer. The open deck allows cargo to be loaded from different angles using a forklift or crane, making flatbed trailers ideal for transporting large, bulky commodities. A distinctive factor of flatbed trucking is load securement. Because the cargo is placed on an open deck, the load must be secured to the flatbed trailer to keep the commodity from moving during transit. Flatbed truck drivers must physically secure their loads on top of the trailer, lifting heavy chains, tarps and other equipment. It’s a physical job that involves more than just driving a truck!

Typical flatbed commodities:

Steel coils, plates or sheets
Wallboard and paper rolls
Pipe
Lumber
Mill rolls and ingots
Structural rails and beams
Prefabricated concrete
Mulch, shingles and super sacks
Machinery

Flatbed trailer types:

Flatbed: Open deck trailer with a length of 48’ or 53’ with a height of 5’.
Step deck: Open deck trailer with a bottom and top deck, used for hauling cargo that cannot fit on a standard flatbed trailer due to height restrictions. The bottom deck is lower to the ground than a standard flatbed trailer.
Removable gooseneck (RGN): Open deck trailer with a detachable front, creating a ramp to help the loading process. RGN trailers are designed to transport tall and/or long commodities.
Conestoga: Specialized flatbed trailer with a rectangular outer shell/tarp that folds up during the loading process like an accordion. When the Conestoga trailer is closed, the cargo is protected from the elements without the need for additional tarps.
Side kit: Trailer with side panels made of wood/fiberglass and a circular shell/tarp on top, typically used for cargo that isn’t prepackaged.

What is load securement?

Proper load securement is one of the main tasks for a flatbed truck driver. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) sets cargo securement rules for all cargo-carrying commercial motor vehicles operating in interstate commerce. These regulations are in place in prevent any cargo from shifting or falling off the trailer, keeping our highways safe for truck drivers and other motorists.

Once a flatbed trailer is loaded with the commodity, it is the truck driver’s responsibility to properly secure the cargo. The commodity’s type, weight, length, loading position and size all factor into determining the proper securement method, including the number of securement devices that will be legally required by the FMCSA. PGT’s company policy adds one extra securement device beyond the number required by FMCSA as a part of our commitment to safety.

Securement Equipment:

Beveled lumber/dunnage
Trip block
Coil racks
Chains
Ratchet binders
Edge protectors (metal and plastic)
Rubber belting
Rubber bungees (bungees are NOT used to secure equipment or cargo)
Steel tarps
Straps
J-Hooks

Flatbed truck drivers use chains, binders and straps to tie down the commodity, and extra dunnage and trip blocks can be used to prevent forward movement. Once the load is secured, the flatbed truck driver must then tarp the load, protecting the cargo from weather and debris (depending on the commodity type and client instructions). Steel tarps can weigh 65lbs or more, and flatbed truck drivers must be able to lift, carry and maneuver these tarps. Tarping is one of the most physically taxing jobs for a flatbed truck driver, but they take pride in doing their job well!

Once the load is secured, the flatbed truck driver can head out, starting the drive to make a safe and timely delivery. But the job isn’t done yet! The load’s securement must be routinely checked along the way to ensure that nothing has shifted and chains and straps are still tight.

Load Securement Checks:

Within the first 50 miles or 1 hour, whichever comes first
Every 150 miles or 3 hours thereafter, whichever comes first
At every change of duty status
Immediately after a hard brake or evasive maneuver

What makes a great flatbed truck driver?

Safety! Flatbed truck drivers are committed to safety by keeping their loads secured, driving defensively and following all guidelines, rules and regulations for safe operations. These truck drivers are dedicated, working outside in extreme heat or cold, rain or shine, all day long. They navigate through construction zones, heavy traffic and distracted drivers, all while staying calm behind the wheel.

Here’s a step-by-step overview of PGT’s flatbed truck driver application process so that you know what to expect along the way.

Step 1: Complete an Application

Interested candidates should submit a DOT application to PGT right here. The application is also mobile friendly!

To complete PGT’s flatbed trucking application, you’ll need the following information:

Personal: Social security number, date of birth, address, contact information.
DOT Qualifications: Years of driving experience, DOT Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse history.
CDL License: Includes any endorsements or TWIC card (if applicable).
- All applicants must already have an active CDL.
Motor Vehicle Record: Includes any commercial or personal tickets or violations.
- Please provide as much detail as possible when listing any incidents.
Accident History.
- Please provide as much detail as possible when listing any incidents.
Employment History: Must include at least the previous three years. You can also upload your resume and add any CDL school or military experience.
- PGT uses a percentage pay model based on verifiable experience, so it’s important to include ALL commercial driving history to get credit for your pay scale.

Step 2: Meet Your Driver Recruiter

Once you apply, you’ll be assigned a PGT Driver Recruiter. Your Recruiter will review your application and reach out to you with additional information using your preferred contact method (phone, text or email). Your PGT Driver Recruiter is available to you at any time throughout the process and will guide you all the way through to Driver Training and Orientation.

Your Driver Recruiter will get to know you as a person, learning about your pay and home time expectations, your hobbies and interests and your family life. Our goal is to ensure that PGT is the right fit for you and your family. Your Driver Recruiter is there to answer any questions you may have about PGT, including your benefits, career options, training needs and more. PGT Recruiters are evaluated on their ability to provide transparent and accurate information, not by how many candidates they bring in the door. No experience? No problem!

We accept new CDL truck drivers with no experience (you must already have your Class A CDL). If you recently graduated from CDL school, your Driver Recruiter will have additional prescreening questions for you, learning more about your family life, your interests in trucking and your long-term goals in the industry. Flatbed trucking is a rewarding yet challenging career, and we want you to be prepared for life over the road. Your Driver Recruiter will give you an in-depth overview of our Driver Training and Orientation Program, including the time you’ll spend driving with a PGT Certified PRO Trainer. Once you are pre-approved, your Driver Recruiter will continue the application process.

Step 3: Driver Reports

After reviewing your application, your Driver Recruiter will order your commercial driving reports, including your Motor Vehicle Record (MVR), Commercial Driver’s License Information System (CDLIS), criminal background reports and Pre-Employment Screening Program (PSP score). The reports are processed quickly, and your Driver Recruiter will let you know if your application needs to be updated with any additional information before proceeding.

Step 4: Predictive Index (PI) Behavioral Assessment

Your Driver Recruiter will also send you a link to complete your PI behavioral assessment. This tool helps PGT understand your natural behavioral tendencies, giving us insight into who you are. Based on your PI results, we’ll match you with the Fleet Manager who best complements your style, building a solid foundation for your relationship from the start. The PI consists of a few questions about your personality and how you work, and it takes about 15-20 minutes to complete. The assessment is mobile friendly, but it’s helpful to complete the questions in a private setting with minimal distractions.

Note: There is no pass or fail result on the PI.

Step 5: Operations Interview

Once your application and PI are complete, your Driver Recruiter will schedule your Operations Interview with one of PGT Trucking’s Fleet Managers. At PGT, your Fleet Manager is more than just a dispatcher. They are true partners, supporting you every mile to help you succeed over the road. During the Operations Interview, you’ll have an opportunity to speak with your potential Fleet Manager, letting them know your expectations for pay, home time, preferred shipping lanes, commodity types and more. In return, our Fleet Manager will prepare you for PGT’s standards on job performance, utilization, communication and professionalism.

PGT believes in laying the groundwork for a successful partnership by having you speak with our Operations team during the application process, ensuring that our viewpoints are aligned before you make a commitment. We encourage you to be honest during the interview, sharing your true expectations – how much do you need to make each week to support your family? Where are you most comfortable running? What do you want out of your trucking company? This is your opportunity to learn more about our daily processes and determine if PGT is the right fit for you.

After the Operations Interview, your Driver Recruiter will check back in with you, confirming that you’re ready to proceed with PGT Trucking.

Step 6: Drug Screen

Next, your PGT Driver Recruiter will order your drug screen authorizations. We’ll provide you with the closest location that is within our drug screening network, and your paperwork will be provided directly to the facility.

At PGT, we require a urine test and hair follicle analysis. It can take up to 10 business days to receive results, so it’s important to complete this step in a timely manner.

Step 7: Send Us Your Credentials

After completing your drug screen, we’re ready to schedule your Truck Driver Training and Orientation. You’ll need to send us copies of the following credentials so our Training Department can prepare your file:

CDL (picture front and back)
Social Security Card
DOT medical card
TWIC (if applicable)
Direct deposit information
Other items may be requested as needed

Step 8: Truck Driver Training and Orientation

PGT Trucking’s industry-leading Driver Training and Orientation program is a five-day course at our facility in Blairsville, PA. Once you are scheduled for the week, we will arrange your travel, including your transportation to the Pittsburgh region (if needed), lodging for the week, and local transportation to and from our training facility. Company Drivers will receive Training and Orientation pay, including a per diem for meals.

Every Tuesday morning, our new class of Proud Professional Drivers is introduced on a video call to the entire PGT corporate staff, including company executives, helping us to welcome you to the PGT family. Our Corporate Chaplain also meets with each class during the week, encouraging personal and professional growth through strong personal connections. These meetings are an opportunity for you to ask questions, learn more about PGT, and experience our safety-focused culture.

During Truck Driver Training and Orientation, you’ll receive in-depth classroom instruction and hands-on opportunities focused on safety, cargo securement, advanced driver training and more. Our team of instructors consists of veteran CDL drivers with over 100 years of combined experience. They will walk you through everything you need to learn about flatbed trucking, including the proper securement of steel coils, plates, rails, wallboard, lumber, pipe and more. You will physically secure mock loads in our Training Bay, strapping, chaining and tarping the various commodity types, and complete an evaluation on driving, securement and PGT Trucking best practices. For experienced flatbed drivers, our Training team will help you brush up on the basics and learn the PGT way, getting you back out on the road quickly.

PGT Flatbed Truck Drivers are Proud Professionals. A proper appearance must be maintained on the job at all times, including the week of Driver Training and Orientation. Drivers are expected to be prompt, ready to start class every morning by 8 a.m., and wear appropriate work clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE). We’ll supply you with a pair of work gloves, a reflective vest, a hard hat and safety glasses. Make sure to bring your steel-toed boots and appropriate work clothes for the week, including jeans/long pants, long sleeve shirts and other weather-appropriate clothing. Prohibited items include, but are not limited to, sweatpants, flip flops, tank tops, torn/frayed clothing and items with words, terms or pictures that may be offensive to others.

After your training, you are ready to get on the road! Based on your experience level, you’ll either be seated in your own truck on Friday, ready to pick up your first load and head back home, or assigned to ride with one of PGT’s Certified PRO Trainers, learning from the very best in real-world scenarios before seating in your own unit.

Your Driver Recruiter will continue to stay in touch during your first few months, making sure you’re acclimating to life at PGT, and your Fleet Manager, Safety Manager and Training Staff are all available to you 24/7/365, supporting you every mile so that you are never alone on the road.

Stewart has been with PGT since 2011, holding positions from Staff Accountant to Assistant Controller. Guzman joined PGT in 2004, serving most recently as Vice President, Finance. With more than 18 years of experience in the company’s financial departments, Guzman is well prepared for his new position. As Chief Financial Officer, Guzman will oversee PGT’s financial management, maximize the company’s earnings and identify strategic growth opportunities.

“I am honored to transition into this new leadership role,” said Guzman. “I will remain focused on maintaining PGT’s strong financial position, and with my expanded responsibilities, look forward to reaching new levels of success and growth.”

Guzman holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration – Finance from Robert Morris University and earned his Masters of Business Administration in 2009. He was also a member of RMU’s NCAA Division I men’s basketball team. Originally a native of Ecuador, Guzman became a U.S. citizen in 2016 and now resides in Oakdale, PA, with his wife and two sons.

Erin began working at PGT in 2013 and has held several positions in the Operations, Safety and Risk Departments. Erin is the Chairman of the company’s Innovation Committee, and in his new role, he will be tasked with promoting PGT’s Future of Flatbed^® initiatives by adding quality talent to the Applied Technology department, overseeing the implementation of new software in company systems and leading PGT’s innovative approach to transportation solutions.

“The Future of Flatbed will revolutionize our internal and external operating structures to increase efficiency, improve safety standards and reduce carbon emissions, and the Applied Technology department is a vital component of this successful execution,” said Erin. “PGT is actively preparing for the future by leading the way to progressive freight solutions, and I am excited to be a part of this evolution in my new role.”

Erin earned a bachelor’s degree in History, Secondary Education from American University, and he was part of the American Trucking Associations’ LEAD program in 2020. Erin currently resides in Beaver, PA, with his wife and three children.

‘Twas the week before Christmas, when all through the yard,

No driver was stirring, nor security guard.

The coils were tarped on the flatbeds with care,

In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.

The drivers were parked, all snug in their beds,

Dreams of delivery dancing in their heads.

All equipment was stored, tucked safely in the cab,

Keeping it away from crooks and thieves to grab.

When out in the yard there arose such a clatter,

Our drivers jumped up to see what was the matter.

Climbing out of the truck, they used three points of contact,

Landing safely on ground that was hard and compact.

The moonlight gleamed on the pristine white lacquer,

Surely there could not be any finer looking tractors.

When, what to our drivers’ eyes should appear,

But a truck and trailer pulled by eight reindeer.

The driver climbed down, so lively and quick,

The Proud Professionals knew it must be St. Nick.

He loaded his trailer with a giant red sack,

Safely resting on lumber and three coil racks.

He was dressed in high vis, from his head to his foot,

He looked so professional, no ashes or soot.

A bundle of straps he had flung overhead,

Ready to secure his loaded flatbed.

Edge protectors came first, then his straps and his chains,

Heavy they were but he never complained.

Oh how he tightened each securement device,

Taking his time to not slip on the snow and ice.

His binders, he cranked, making them taut,

Securing his load, just like he ought.

Plus one for the family, he did so include,

Making sure the Head Elf of Safety approved.

His load safe and secure, he checked the reindeer,

A pre-trip inspection and then he was clear.

He climbed in the truck, all ready to go,

With a glance at our drivers, standing below.

He leaned out the window, calling them near,

A grin on his face, smiling from ear to ear,

“Your safety and securement always impress,

And with that quick note, St. Nick drove away,

Building Relationships over the Road: Flatbed Truck Drivers Benefit from a Corporate Chaplain

America’s truck drivers are out on the road every day, transporting the goods and materials that fill our grocery stores, build our cars and stock our hospitals. These men and women travel across the country, safely navigating through congested highways, busy truck stops and packed delivery sites. They work hard to provide for their families back home, keeping the bills paid, the fridge full and the lights on. Truck drivers are essential to keep our country running, but this job isn’t for everyone. Trucking is a way of life, and drivers need to have a strong support system in order to be successful. PGT Trucking knows the importance of those personal relationships, which is why we provide additional services through our Corporate Chaplain, helping our flatbed truck drivers and office staff persevere through any situation.

A corporate chaplain is a faith-based counselor in the workplace, providing a comforting outlet for truck drivers to manage feelings of stress, grief, crisis, anxiety and more. Our personal lives don’t stop once the work clock starts, and a corporate chaplain can help guide us through the challenges we face during the day. According to the American Institute of Stress, 83% of U.S. workers suffer from work-related stress. The transportation industry is a 24/7 business, and it can be difficult for truck drivers to continue operating at top performance levels, especially when faced with personal struggles at home.

“As PGT’s Chaplain, my role is to raise awareness of our mental and spiritual health, encouraging individuals to improve their relationships,” said Sid Bream, PGT Trucking Corporate Chaplain. “PGT feels like a family because we truly care about each other’s wellbeing. It starts with the challenge of becoming a better person, a better spouse and a better parent.”

A Better You Leads to Strong Relationships

Sid believes that when you work to become a better person, you begin to strengthen the relationships with those around you. For truck drivers who spend their days over the road in a truck cab, they can feel isolated from their loved ones back home and their Operations personnel at the office. Through Sid’s experience as a professional baseball player, he can relate to the struggles that distance may cause and help drivers make stronger connections in their personal and professional lives.

“During my baseball career, I spent a lot of time on the road away from my wife and family,” stated Sid. “I understand how difficult it can be to maintain those relationships when you’re not home, so I try to offer guidance and impart God’s wisdom, helping our drivers work through their problems. You may have to work twice as hard, but you can do it.”

PGT truck drivers primarily contact Sid to discuss concerns about their relationships, whether at home or at the office, but they can also reach out during any potentially difficult times, like the loss of a loved one or a serious medical diagnosis. PGT’s Corporate Chaplain is there to assist our drivers and office staff however they need, even if it seems minor.

“Some people just want to tell their story and be heard,” said Sid. “I actively listen, letting them get it off their chest. If it feels like more than that, I’ll offer some guidance, but it always starts with just listening.”

Benefits of Corporate Chaplaincy

Corporate chaplaincy has traditionally been used by organizations like hospitals, sports teams and the U.S. military, but the service has grown over the past decade, with more public and private companies expanding their employee benefits to include access to a chaplain. PGT has maintained a chaplain service since 2009, adding Sid as our in-house Corporate Chaplain in 2014.

“Corporations are starting to understand that people are hurting and need some guidance, so they are installing chaplains to help,” noted Sid.

Estimates believe that employee usage of chaplains in the workplace are above 50%, and according to Corporate Chaplains of America, companies can benefit from “lower employee turnover, higher reported job satisfaction, greater employee productivity and lower absenteeism rates.” At PGT, the service has aided our recruiting efforts, solidifying our founding principle of building personal relationships.

“I consistently receive feedback from our drivers about how much they value our chaplain service,” stated Michael Opacic, PGT Trucking Driver Recruiter. “Sid meets with the new truck driver class every week, and it has a positive impact on our drivers of faith.”

Comprehensive Support System

PGT’s Corporate Chaplain attends our Driver Training and Orientation in Blairsville, PA, every week to meet with our truck driver candidates. During the meeting, Sid shares his story with the class, motivating our drivers to focus on their families, their relationships and their goals. Every driver receives Sid’s contact information, and they are encouraged to reach out to him whenever they are in need.

Sid also visits PGT’s Headquarters in Aliquippa, PA, maintaining close ties with PGT Operations staff and Senior Leadership. Whenever a Proud Professional is in need, our Corporate Chaplain can work with our staff to find an effective solution, creating a cohesive support unit for the driver.

The Season of Giving: How PGT Trucking Supports Our Local Community

Thanksgiving is a time to count our blessings, express our gratitude and help those less fortunate. As PGT prepares for the holidays, we are inspired to spread goodwill throughout our local communities. The charitable season is generally kick-started with Giving Tuesday (the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving) and lasts through December 31. Because the generous spirit of holidays coincides with many fiscal year-ends, the majority of charitable donations are made during the last quarter of the year, with approximately 30% of all annual giving occurring in December.

People can support local causes in a variety of ways, making monetary donations, raising awareness or volunteering their time and services. Approximately 77.9 million people volunteer in the U.S., serving an estimated 5.8 billion hours per year. Volunteerism is also locally-driven. Through a recent survey by Walgreens, 92% of respondents were more likely to contribute to a local charity than a national organization, believing that it will have a bigger impression in the community. By donating to a local group, people are able to see the immediate impact of their generosity and help improve their own neighborhoods.

Yearlong Activities – While the holiday season motivates us to be more giving, charities and nonprofit organizations need our support all year long. Consider setting up a monthly donation or planning volunteer activities each quarter.

Life after Military Service: Veterans in Trucking

On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, an armistice went into effect in 1918, signaling the end of World War I. Today, 104 years later, we honor the 41 million men and women who have served in the United States military, observing the historical significance of November 11. Each year, Veterans Day is an opportunity for us to thank America’s veterans for their service, dedication and sacrifice, and PGT Trucking values and appreciates the commitment these men and women have shown to our country. Today, and every day, we thank you for your service.

THE SKILLS TO SUCCEED

After active duty, veterans must start their transition back to civilian life. They are faced with starting over, finding a new home, a new purpose, and a new career. While service members spend years honing their skills within their specialized occupation, they are often left wondering how to apply those skills to a job once they’re out of the military. The transition phase can be one of the most difficult tasks for a veteran to manage, but a career in trucking can provide immediate opportunities for those with a military background.

For James Delwiche, PGT Manager, Breakdown, he used his experience as a diesel mechanic in the United States Marine Corps to help guide his career path in transportation. James joined PGT after serving eight years, including two deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. James has been able to use his knowledge as a diesel mechanic to help PGT drivers get back on the road quickly, but the military provided James with more than just a mechanical background.

“Through the Marine Corps, I learned to be disciplined, to adapt to any situation, and to perform my duties with a sense of urgency,” says James. “These qualities have helped me succeed at PGT, especially in the Maintenance Department.”

Approximately 10% of employed veterans currently work in transportation. As James mentioned, veterans have an aptitude for trucking—their discipline, hard work ethic and overall adaptability helps them to be successful, building long, prosperous careers in the industry. PGT Company Driver Clifford Heaton believes that the meticulous nature of the military also plays a part in helping flatbed truck drivers stay safe on the road.

“In the military, you must pay attention to every little detail,” states Cliff. “There are lives at stake if you don’t, and that applies to truck driving as well. You have to stay focused on the road to keep everyone around you safe.”

Cliff served in the United States Air Force for 10 years, traveling through 26 countries during his military career. He now drives for PGT as a Million Mile Safe Driver and a Premier Professional, an elite fleet of PGT drivers who maintain high performance and safety standards at all times.

David Brainard, PGT Company Driver, has been able to apply his extensive route planning experience in the United States Army to flatbed truck driving. David served in the Army for 11 years as a part of convoy operations, deploying to Iraq and Cuba during Operation Enduring Freedom, so trip planning as a flatbed truck driver came naturally to him. David has built upon his success at PGT to become a Certified PRO Trainer, tasked with training PGT’s newest drivers the flatbed trucking basics, including effective trip planning. David has found his true calling at PGT, recently being named as PGT’s Certified PRO Trainer of the Year for 2021.

“PGT is a great company for veterans,” states David. “PGT’s values reflect the same military qualities that we veterans all share, and you can build a prosperous career here.”

THE SUPPORT YOU NEED

Cody Kastelic, PGT Manager, Load Center, completed a four-year service in the United States Air Force as an Air Transportation Specialist, even taking part in the presidential detail. After the Air Force, Cody decided to advance his logistics career and join PGT. Like James, Cliff and David, Cody has found success in the trucking industry due to the similarities between the military and transportation.

“In the Air Force and at PGT, everything is very structured, and communication is critical,” says Cody. “There’s a comradery here that makes it easy to fit in and perform well.”

That comradery has led to other veterans considering a career in transportation, like Jarrett Shreffler, PGT Carrier Relations Representative. Jarrett served in the United States Marines Corps for four years as a canine handler, spending time assigned to the United States Secret Service. After the military, Jarrett briefly attended college classes, but he was unsure of his civilian career path. Jarrett met Cody at a local career fair, talking about their similar military backgrounds, and because of their conversation, Jarrett decided to enter the trucking industry.

“The Marine Corps helped me learn to adapt to unforeseen situations,” states Jarrett. “Transportation is very similar to the military in that both fields are constantly changing, so I was able to easily transition into this new role and be successful.”

Fellow Marine Steven Michener, PGT Company Driver, also recognizes the bond that military veterans share, especially for truck drivers out on the road. Steve served in the United States Marine Corps for five years as a diesel mechanic, spending time at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms. Steve has been with PGT since 2004, being recognized as a 10 Year Safe Driver and member of our Premier Professional fleet, and he is entrusted with driving the PGT Pittsburgh Panthers truck to Pitt’s football games.

“Veterans look out for each other,” notes Steve. “It’s an admirable trait, and it never goes away. We have a strong sense of community within the trucking industry.”

Richard Blinkiewicz, PGT Company Driver, has never shied away from hard work. Richard served in the United States Navy for four years as a mechanic, spending two and a half years on a submarine tender outside of Spain. Richard worked on various equipment in the Navy, including cranes that loaded nuclear missiles into submarines, and he applied the basic mechanical skills he learned to his civilian career, always turning a wrench in some capacity. Richard joined PGT in 1997, and he has had a successful trucking career. As he prepares for his retirement from the truck (he will still be keeping busy at home), Richard has some advice for the next generation of drivers.

“Take care of yourself, eat right and take the time to do the right things,” advises Richard. “This is hard, yet rewarding, work, and your body will thank you in the future.”

Driver-to-Driver Perspective: Four Keys to Lease Purchase Success

Have you ever dreamed of owning your truck? Are you unsure of where to begin? We asked our own Lease Purchase Drivers for their advice, giving you a driver-to-driver perspective on what you need to know before entering a lease-to-own agreement.

Deshontae Bean entered PGT’s Lease Purchase Program in October 2021, and he has quickly become one of our top revenue earners. Deshontae credits his success to partnering with the right trucking company and being disciplined as a small business owner. His goal is to work toward owning a small fleet, expanding PGT’s presence in the Southeast.

Steve Dowler has been with PGT since April 2015, using our Lease Purchase Program multiple times to help grow his own fleet. Steve already owns seven trucks with his business partner, and they hope to start bringing in their own customers as well, eventually becoming an Integrated Fleet Partner with PGT.

“You have to set yourself up for a Monday delivery,” says Deshontae. “Those weekly deductions add up, so every bit of revenue helps offset your ownership costs.”

Both Steve and Deshontae stress the importance of gaining experience as a company truck driver before entering a lease purchase agreement.

Deshontae compares the trucking industry to his service in the United States Marine Corps. New recruits are only tasked with learning the military’s standard operations, and they are not given the opportunity to advance until they’ve mastered the basic processes first. This same approach can be applied to a truck driving career.

“Lease purchase candidates should focus on the trucking basics and learn how to be a successful truck driver first,” says Deshontae. “Once they have that solid foundation, they can start learning the business aspects of truck ownership.”

Steve believes prospective lease purchase drivers can also benefit from working as a company driver, gaining a firsthand look at how a company operates before entering a long-term deal.

“When you enter a lease purchase agreement, the business side will be completely new to you,” states Steve. “If you’re already familiar with the company, it will be easier to succeed in their lease purchase program.”

Like Steve and Deshontae, PGT knows there is a lot for prospective lease purchase operators to learn, which is why we require at least one year of driving experience for our Lease Purchase Program. “You can’t be afraid to voice your opinion,” states Deshontae. “If there’s something you need, ask. Your Fleet Manager will work with you to ensure you reach your full potential.”

Celebrating Cultural Influences during Hispanic Heritage Month

PGT Trucking is proud to employ drivers and staff of diverse backgrounds, and during National Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the cultural influences from the Hispanic community. In 2021, Hispanics accounted for 23.6% of the U.S. transportation workforce. At PGT, 20.0% of our corporate employees and 18.0% of our truck driver base are Hispanic. They have strong roots from Mexico, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Guatemala, Argentina and other Latin American countries. They are truck drivers, billing specialists, recruiters, safety personnel, risk analysts, fleet managers and more. They are all a part of PGT, and we are proud to share the following truck drivers’ stories.

Adrian Alvarado lives in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, and he has been truck driving for 20 years, seven of which were in the United States—four with PGT. Adrian is a foreign national truck driver with a B-1 visa, allowing Adrian to pick up and deliver cargo for international business. Adrian spends a significant amount of time in the U.S., and he believes it’s important to join the right company in order to overcome any culture barriers he may face while on the road.

“It’s been a pleasure to work with PGT,” states Adrian. “PGT’s language support has helped me succeed as an international truck driver. It’s easier to get the job done when I can communicate directly with people at PGT.”

The majority of departments at PGT maintain at least one bilingual representative to better assist our Proud Professionals, including Adrian’s Fleet Manager, Javier Ramos. Javier also speaks Spanish, and the two maintain a close working relationship.

“Javier gets where I’m coming from,” notes Adrian. “He knows my culture, and I can speak comfortably with him since he understands the local slang.”

Adrian appreciates the freedom that trucking provides him. He comes from a long line of truckers, and like his family members before him, Adrian enjoys visiting new places; however, he’s always happy to get back home in Mexico. Family is one of the most important aspects of his Hispanic culture, and Adrian chose to drive internationally to provide more opportunities for his family, noting that there are better benefits and increased job security by going over-the-road.

“I always want to make it home to my family,” says Adrian. “They keep me focused on being safe while driving.”

Another part that Adrian loves about his Mexican heritage is their overall festive nature, and the food is always exceptional. His wife’s roast beef recipe is a particular favorite, and tacos are always appreciated, too, “but only if the tortilla is homemade with fresh corn!” Adrian explains.

Adrian is a proud Hispanic truck driver, and he works hard, doing the best that he possibly can to make PGT and his family proud of him as well.

Roberto Zapata lives in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, with his wife and three daughters. Roberto has been a truck driver since 2005, and he has been driving with PGT for 14 years. Roberto is also a B-1 driver, and he enjoys the time he gets to drive in the U.S. His favorite places to travel are Midwest states like Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania, which give him a chance to experience different seasons, including winter weather like snow. For Roberto, though, the best part about driving in the U.S. is the overall consideration for safety.

“In the U.S., everyone follows the rules,” Roberto says. “It’s a lot different than driving in Mexico, and I appreciate how the U.S. views and enforces safety.”

He knows there are a lot of variables outside of his control, like the weather and other motorists, so he takes his time to focus on what he can control, like his driving habits and cargo securement. His strongest motivation to stay safe is getting home to his family, and Roberto is grateful for PGT’s safety efforts.

“It’s helpful when PGT communicates with me in Spanish, especially with their safety messages,” states Roberto. “I’m able to understand everything clearly and know exactly what to do.”

Roberto speaks English as well, but it’s easier to comprehend things in his primary language of Spanish. When Roberto travels in the U.S., he tries to stay true to his heritage by speaking a little Spanish along the way. Language plays a major role in Roberto’s identity, but his favorite aspect of his Hispanic culture is the food—especially carne asada. Family is also meaningful, and he loves spending time with his wife and daughters when he’s home.

When he’s on the road, Roberto has a passion for driving, and he’s found support and success at PGT.

“This is a good company,” says Roberto. “I don’t want to drive for anyone else.”

Ramon Garibay is a third-generation American from Laredo, Texas; his grandparents originated from the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Ramon has been driving for 25 years, and he recently joined PGT in April 2021. Truck driving has given Ramon an opportunity to provide for his family, and at PGT, he has been able to run a local lane so that he’s home more often. Ramon enjoys spending more time with his wife and three daughters, but he lovingly admits that they keep him busier than ever!

For Ramon, being Hispanic means he gets to experience the best of both Mexican and American cultures.

“I’m exposed to a variety of things,” says Ramon. “I feel more fulfilled in life by knowing two cultures and languages. I also love the food from both places!”

Ramon believes the greatest aspect of his Hispanic heritage is a hard work ethic, something that was instilled in him at a young age. Everyone has to work hard to support the family, which made truck driving a natural choice for Ramon.

“Truck driving is the way I take care of my family,” states Ramon. “I started driving when I turned 21, and it’s just something that I’ve kept doing.”

Ramon is a PGT Trucking Certified PRO Trainer, tasked with teaching our new Apprentice and B-1 drivers through real world situations on the road. He interacts with our international truck drivers frequently, and it helps them to connect through their shared heritage.

“We have a great environment at our Laredo office,” says Ramon. “We’re all from different backgrounds, but we can communicate effectively.”

Ramon sees the hard work and dedication of our B-1 drivers, including their desire to overcome any cultural differences while in the U.S. He knows that it takes a little extra help to get our international truck drivers started, but once they build some confidence, these trained drivers are able to adapt to any situation, thanks to Ramon’s guidance.

“We’re all proud to be a part of PGT and work hard,” states Ramon.

Contract Puts Locomation’s AV Tech to Work on PGT Trucking’s Freight Routes to Improve Operational Efficiency, Reduce Costs and Carbon Footprint While Increasing Safety

PITTSBURGH, PA—Locomation, the world’s first technology platform to offer human-guided autonomous truck convoying, today announced a multi-year agreement with PGT Trucking Inc., a leader in flatbed transportation, to deploy Locomation autonomous truck technology for use on PGT Trucking routes.

During the eight year agreement, PGT Trucking will deploy 1,000 Autonomous Relay ConvoyTM (ARC) systems on over 30 separate ARC segments. Each ARC segment is engineered for maximum yield by Locomation’s freight network optimization team headed by industry veteran Tom Kroswek, VP of Strategy and Business Development. ARC enables one driver to pilot a lead truck equipped with technology augmentation while a follower truck operates in tandem through Locomation’s fully autonomous system. This allows the follower driver to log off and rest while the truck is in motion.

“We are thrilled about this partnership,” said Dr. Çetin Meriçli, Locomation’s co-founder and CEO. “We’ve built our ARC technology and network strategy to leverage the value of long-established trucking routes and systems, and PGT Trucking is a great fit for operating a supply chain custom built for autonomous trucks.”

Under the terms of the agreement Locomation will initially provide a two-truck convoy with safety staff and will work in tandem with the PGT Trucking operations team to execute the most efficient freight movements possible. At full commercialization, Locomation’s autonomous vehicle technology is expected to produce an estimated 30% reduction in operating cost per mile, including an 8% reduction in fuel expense that removes over 40 metric tons of carbon dioxide from the air per convoy annually.

Locomation is a Pittsburgh-based autonomous trucking technology company founded in 2018 by some of the world’s foremost experts in autonomous vehicles, robotics, and artificial intelligence from Carnegie Mellon’s National Robotics Engineering Center, along with trucking industry leaders.
