Considering a career as an owner-operator/independent contractor? With the ever increasing demand for truck drivers, there has never been a better time to start your own business as an independent contractor.

Do you want:

  • To own your own truck

  • Flexibility and freedom

  • Increased earning potential

As an independent contractor, you will own and run your business, so it’s important to partner with a company who will help you succeed.

The main things to consider when transitioning from a company driver to an independent contractor truck driver

  • Running a business – As an independent contractor, you will face an entirely new set of tasks that were previously handled by your employer, like managing cash flow, keeping tax records and filing permits. You’ll also be responsible for maintenance costs, new equipment and other business-related expenses. By partnering with a major carrier like PGT, owner-operators can get the support they need to help run their business while maintaining their independence.

  • Start up funds – When making the transition to being an independent contractor, one of the most common questions is “How do I move from a Company Driver to an Owner-Operator without breaking the bank by purchasing my own truck?” Consider working with a company that has a proven lease purchase program.

  • Career goals – Are you looking to own your own truck? Do you dream of owning your own fleet or even starting an agency terminal? Working with a major carrier can help you meet your career goals.

  • Support – Owner-Operators have to find their freight, secure their loads and drive safely for hundreds of miles, all while trying to grow their business. They can find the business support they need through another trucking company, but it’s important to partner with a carrier that supports your independence and wants to help you meet your goals.

The main benefits of partnering with PGT as an independent contractor

  • Maintain your freedom – PGT understands that you want to run your business, so our Owner-Operator program focuses on giving you the support and assistance you need while still respecting your freedom as an independent contractor.

  • Increased earning potential – Independent contractors make more money per load through the percentage pay model. At PGT, our owner-operators earn 75% of the Line Haul Revenue. Partnering with PGT also gives you access to our strong freight network, diverse customer base and dedicated support team.

  • Support – PGT works with each individual driver to develop a customized program to ensure their success. We have an Owner-Operator Advocate who will focus on the corporate side of the business so that our independent contractors can stay on the road making money. Independent contractors also have 24/7 access to their Fleet Managers and Safety Teams for ongoing support.

  • Home time – PGT understands that you want to maximize your earning potential while still getting home for the weekend soccer game. We’ll work with your schedule so you can be home for your family.

  • Lease purchase – PGT has late model equipment available for our lease purchase program, and our trucks are never purchased from an auction. Our custom financing options will help you on the path to truck ownership without breaking the bank.

  • Maintenance support – Through PGT’s vast network, Independent Contractors can take advantage of our top-tier maintenance support to limit their downtime. We’ll get you back on the road quickly so you can continue making money.

  • Family – PGT is a family-oriented business, and we treat our team of professional drivers as our most valued asset. PGT develops personal relationships with our team that builds trust and confidence, setting up drivers for long-term success.

“PGT is very family-oriented, and they take really great care of their drivers. They want to see their drivers succeed and do well. We are all out on the road for one reason – we are trying to provide for our families and give them the best life possible.”
    – Justin Shea, Independent Contractor and Agency Terminal Manager with PGT
  • Benefits – PGT offers access to healthcare programs along with discounts on parts, tires and fuel.

  • Incentive Programs – Contractors are eligible for various incentive programs including referral bonuses, recognition of service years and safety awards.

“PGT’s compensation and incentive programs are one of the best in the industry. When talking with incoming Independent Contractors, it is one of the items that sets us apart from other trucking companies.”
    – Kacy Odom, PGT Senior Recruiter-Independent Contractor Development

With the national truck driver shortage, the demand for truck drivers is at an all time high. The American Trucking Association estimated that in 2021, the shortage hit a historic high of over 80,000 drivers. There are more job opportunities than ever before, and one of the most lucrative careers in the transportation industry is that of a flatbed truck driver.

Flatbed trucking has higher average pay than dry van trucking due to the additional physical requirements and expertise needed to properly secure a loaded commodity. A flatbed truck driver doesn’t just drive the truck from point A to point B—they are on the trailer securing and tarping their cargo to ensure it doesn’t move in transit, and then they get in the cab to drive to their destination.

At PGT Trucking, we use the percentage pay model to pay our drivers, which offers even more benefits over the typical dry van rate per mile pay scale. The majority of PGT’s company fleet averages 27% of the line haul revenue, which means our drivers are paid more for their efforts.

What is work like for the flatbed truck driver?

Flatbed trucks have an open trailer, so drivers can haul larger and heavier cargo than a dry or refrigerated van. Flatbed truck drivers will transport items such as steel coils, building materials, lumber, shingles, pipe and more.

Some key aspects of flatbed trucking are:

  • Load Securement: Because commodities are hauled on an open trailer, they must be properly secured so they will not move in transit. Load securement prevents the cargo from moving and keeps the driver, the commodity and other motorists safe. At PGT, you will have thorough training and ongoing support to make sure you succeed in load securement.

  • Tarping: Flatbed trailers do not have walls or a roof. Heavy duty tarps are used to protect the commodity from the elements and debris. Once the load is secured, tarps are added and secured to protect the load and stay in place during transit.

  • Equipment: Flatbed truck drivers use various types of equipment to secure their loads. PGT provides our company drivers with standard equipment like straps, chains, binders, tarps, dunnage and coil racks, and you’ll learn how to use everything properly during your orientation and training.

What are the major advantages of a career in flatbed trucking?

  • Higher Average Pay: Flatbed truck driving is a financially rewarding career, and in 2021, PGT’s average pay for first year drivers was almost $73,000, compared to an industry average pay of $59,000 for all truck drivers.

  • Opportunities for Specialty Loads: Driving in the flatbed industry gives truckers opportunities for transporting unique cargo, and there are opportunities to haul even more specialized loads, like oversized/overweight commodities or HAZMAT/liquid gasses.

  • Rewarding Career: Flatbed trucking is a challenging yet mentally satisfying job that will provide you with a rewarding career. Drivers regularly apply their skills and knowledge to a variety of tasks, and no two loads are the same. Through flatbed trucking, you will be actively engaged on a daily basis and end your days feeling accomplished.

What do you need to get started in the flatbed trucking industry?

To drive a flatbed truck, you need to obtain a Class A CDL. PGT welcomes drivers from all experience levels, so whether you’re a true veteran or a pure student, we will set you up for success.

What should you look for in a flatbed trucking company job?

A Focus on Family

At PGT, we know the importance of time at home with your family. Roughly 95% of PGT’s drivers are home on a weekly basis. PGT goes one step further and treats you like a member of our family—you’re not just a truck driver with a number. We focus on maintaining driver relationships so that you always feel at home with PGT.

Solid Benefits

All of PGT’s drivers, office personnel and even our CEO, Pat Gallagher, are on the same health plan. When we say that we treat our team as a family, we mean it, and we cover everyone with the best benefits available, from top executives down to non-exempt employees.

Best Pay

Our company fleet averages 27% of the line haul revenue. PGT’s percentage pay beats out mileage pay, which is why we are an industry leader in driver compensation. Drivers paid by percentage can easily make 50% more than the same jobs with the mileage pay model.

Support and Training

Regardless of your experience level, PGT has a training program for you! For student drivers, we make sure to get you behind the wheel with one of our Certified PRO Trainers so that you can start driving right away while having the support of a fellow driver. We believe that you learn from the best, so all of our instructors are skilled CDL drivers with over 100 years of combined driving experience.

Your support doesn’t end after training! PGT drivers have 24/7/365 access to their Fleet Managers, Safety/Risk Team and Training Department.

With more than 40 years of experience, PGT Trucking knows that our drivers are the greatest asset to our success. While PGT has always been committed to supporting our Proud Professionals, the rest of the transportation industry didn’t always hold the same beliefs, but that old school ideology is changing. We are enhancing our driver experience and providing a safer, more reliable service through technology advancements and new age thinking. PGT will continue to transform our industry and improve the lifestyle for our drivers.

No one knows more about the industry changes than our final driver spotlight and new Million Mile Driver, William Tucker.

Meet William Tucker
William Tucker has over 27 years of truck driving experience, and he’s been with PGT as a Company Driver for over 12 years (the longest he’s been with any company). Bill knows that things weren’t always easy for truck drivers, and he’s grateful for the “new school” changes in the industry.
“Back in the day, no one cared about drivers as much. You didn’t have cell phones and 24/7 access to your company. You had to wait in a long line for a pay phone, and if you didn’t call them in time, the office was closed for the night,” says Bill. “Now, I have hands-free capability and can get ahold of someone at PGT whenever I need them. The industry has done a great job to become a more professional industry, and it shows.”
Bill also appreciates the new technology in the truck, particularly the AI-powered cameras and electronic logging device. It makes it easier for him to keep track of his driving time throughout the day, and the cameras help to show what really happens on the road, especially if there is an incident. With these new advances, Bill is able to focus on his driving and staying safe, which he has done for over one million miles.
“It’s easy: anticipate. You have to anticipate what’s going to happen, what other people will do,” states Bill. “Focus on what’s ahead, maintain your speed and get out and look at your situation.”
Bill’s advice to his fellow drivers, especially to pure students, is to take their time. He doesn’t get in a hurry and focuses on safety above all else. Bill knows that it’s easier to reschedule a delivery than it is to deal with a violation, load shift or accident.
“Slow down, don’t get in a hurry and take time to learn,” advises Bill.
Bill is also a two-time combat veteran from the 82nd Airborne Division in the U.S. Army. Bill believes that being a flatbed truck driver has some similarities to being in the military, so it was a natural transition for him when he changed careers.
When asked what was easier, jumping out of a plane or driving a truck, Bill joked, “jumping out of a plane, definitely. All I had to do was jump and count.”
For Bill, he plans to keep driving as long as he can. He likes what he does, and he makes good money doing it. When he is at home, Bill enjoys working out, restoring his 1972 Dodge Dart Swinger and working on projects around the house, especially landscaping. When he is on the road, Bill likes to stay informed and listens to news from around the world, and he even hosts his own podcast. Bill hates to be bored, and flatbed trucking provides him a new challenge every day to keep him motivated.
So what does Bill plan to do next?
“Keep driving and keep supporting my family,” says Bill.

PGT Trucking was founded in 1981 with a focus on building lasting relationships and providing quality service, and today, over forty years later, it’s still about the people. PGT is family, and no role at PGT is more important than that of our drivers. Our drivers are treated with respect, and we give them customized support to meet each driver’s individual needs. You’re not just at a number in a truck – you’re a human being and a valued member of our team.
“Our greatest strength at PGT is our commitment to take care of the people who work here, take care of our customers and take care of our drivers,” says Gregg Troian, PGT Trucking President.
For our drivers, the majority of their time is spent over the road alone, so every personal relationship matters. It’s important to stay in touch with friends and family, but with the right company, like PGT, drivers can build additional relationships. PGT values the personal connection with our drivers, and in turn, our drivers feel the support from their team in the office.
As our owner, Pat Gallagher, states, “A driver wants to come work for PGT because PGT cares.”
Our drivers are never truly alone, and one of the most important dynamics at PGT is between a driver and his/her Fleet Manager. We match our drivers and Fleet Managers with the intent of finding the best combination of personalities, planned workloads and operating styles. When you have the right relationship, drivers and Fleet Managers help each other grow and prosper.
At PGT, one of our top driver/manager combinations is in our Wallboard Division. Ross Tindall started driving for PGT in 2011 as a Company Driver, and after 10 years, Ross has joined an elite group of drivers at PGT – our Million Mile Drivers! Ross is also a Certified PRO Trainer. Ross’ Fleet Manager, Frank Taormina, has been with PGT since 2002, and they have worked together for most of Ross’ tenure at PGT. Ross and Frank are a prime example of PGT’s commitment to personal relationships.

Meet Ross Tindall
Frank states that Ross “has always been one of the best drivers on my board.” Ross is an ultimate professional who is always on time, works hard and helps PGT be successful. Other drivers appreciate Ross’ willingness to help, whether it’s securing/tarping a load, adjusting his route or keeping up a “can do” attitude. It’s not easy to safely drive over a million miles without a preventable accident, but Ross’ professionalism and dedication to the job keep him driving at such an elite level.
For Ross, driving a million miles is all about having self-confidence. You need to believe in yourself and have the wherewithal to get the job done.
“The secret,” Ross says, “is that you have to be one with the truck.”
Of course, the job isn’t without challenges. One of the most difficult tasks Ross has faced is driving through New York City, trying to navigate a 48’ loaded trailer with heavy traffic, tight corners and a constant flow of pedestrians. For new drivers, Ross acknowledges that there will be tough times ahead, but the important thing is to hang in there and keep learning.
“Don’t give up,” advises Ross.
Despite the challenges, Ross knows there are a lot of benefits to flatbed truck driving. By staying on top of his schedule, Ross has been able to keep running, make good money and have flexibility with his hours when needed. Ross credits a large part of his success to his Fleet Manager, Frank. According to Ross, Frank learned how Ross liked to operate and formulated a customized plan to keep Ross running based on his preferences. Frank treats Ross like a professional and is always respectful. If there are ever any issues, Ross knows that he can contact Frank and the PGT team, and Ross trusts that the issue will be resolved in a timely and professional manner. Of course, Frank says the same things about Ross.
“Ross is a player I want on my team, always,” states Frank.
Ross values the relationships he has with the other professionals at PGT, and he appreciates our family-oriented approach. For Ross, he knows how important it is to have the support of his Fleet Manager, his Safety/Risk teams and the entire staff at PGT. Together, we can achieve our goals to be safe, efficient and profitable for our drivers, employees and customers. We’re more than a trucking company – we’re family.
“I love this company,” says Ross. “There will be many, many safe years to come with PGT.”
Congratulations on a million safe miles, Ross, and we will continue to support you on your next goal, driving 10 million safe miles with PGT!

Drivers are the foundation of PGT Trucking. Our drivers are true Proud Professionals, and we treat our drivers with respect. They’re not just a number on a truck; our drivers are valued members of our team and part of the PGT family. We believe in providing our drivers with great pay, more home/family time, late model equipment, respect and ongoing support/training. We give our drivers the tools and resources they need to be successful, and with our commitment to safety, our drivers know they will make it home to their families.
Our Million Mile Drivers, Safe Drivers and Premier Professional Fleet set the standard of excellence at PGT. We’re happy to recognize their achievements at our annual celebration event each May, and we thank all of our drivers for a job well done.
Our next driver spotlight features Company Driver Marcelino Rivera, a Premier Professional and new Million Mile Driver this year.

Meet Marcelino Rivera
Marcelino Rivera started driving for PGT in 2007. He works hard and doesn’t shy away from the difficult jobs. In his spare time, Marcelino enjoys writing novels and reading.
“There isn’t a load that Marcelino will refuse, and there isn’t a place in the U.S. that he won’t go,” says Ricardo Fructuoso, Marcelino’s Fleet Manager. “Marcelino is dedicated to succeeding at PGT.”
According to Marcelino, the secret to his success is to take his time and do things the right way from the start without rushing the process.
“If you try to hurry up and finish fast, then you are more likely to make a mistake, and you’ll pay for it later down the road,” states Marcelino.
Marcelino knows that mistakes can be very costly to him, to PGT and to our customers. By taking his time and making sure his loads are properly secured, Marcelino is able to limit his risk of a load shift or accident.
When Marcelino first started driving flatbed, commodity securement was a big challenge. If he picked up a new load with a commodity he never secured before, Marcelino needed to take extra time to determine the proper method before starting the securement process. Of course, Marcelino reached out to his Fleet Manager and Safety/Risk teams when he needed help, which led him to value the relationship he has with his support team.
“I feel at home with PGT simply because people call me by name. I have great relationships with most of the staff at the Laredo terminal. I know that I can tell them exactly what’s on my mind and trust that they will listen,” says Marcelino.
Another challenge that Marcelino faced early in his career was to find the customer and shipper locations. GPS wasn’t readily available, so he had to carefully plan his routes and be extremely aware of his surroundings. Now that Marcelino is more experienced and equipped with newer technology, the biggest difficulty he faces is locating reliable parking spots.
After driving for over fifteen years, reaching one million safe miles and being a member of our Premier Professional fleet, Marcelino has a lot to offer PGT and our new drivers.
“If you want to reach the million mile mark, then I recommend that you do what I do: Take your time and don’t rush anything,” advises Marcelino.
Marcelino’s next goal at PGT will be to join our Certified PRO Trainer team so that he can help new drivers based on his flatbed experience.
Our Certified PRO Trainer program was developed to provide our new driver candidates with the necessary skills and training to be successful at PGT. Our Certified PRO Trainers are given additional training and resources, and each year, they meet for a day of professional growth with dedicated sessions from our Safety, Training, Risk and Operations Departments.
Our Certified PRO Trainers are vital to PGT’s operations, growth and continued development. They are safe drivers, mentors and teachers, and they form lasting relationships with our new drivers, which builds a more cohesive fleet of drivers dedicated to the same goals. Our Certified Pro Trainers are held to a high standard, and we are fortunate to have them on our team.
Congratulations to Marcelino on his accomplishments, and we look forward to his continued growth at PGT!
Join Our Team

Are you interested in learning from an experienced driver like Marcelino? Come join our team, where we practice safety each and every day! We will give you the support and resources you need in order to be successful and make it home to your family safely. Our Safety Managers will coach you into being one of the best and safest drivers on the road, and our Certified PRO Trainers will guide any new student driver into being an experience professional.

We use a percentage pay model to pay our drivers, which can pay 50% more than a mileage pay model. With percentage pay, our drivers know how much they’ll be paid before they pick up the load, and they’re paid more when the freight rates are more, which takes advantage of seasonal upswings and time sensitive deliveries. We also offer great benefits including medical, dental and vision insurance (the same plan our CEO uses), holiday and vacation pay, 401(k) match contribution and more.

With the current outlook in the trucking industry, there is no better time to join PGT Trucking, especially as an Owner Operator. With freight rates at an all-time high, drivers are making more money than ever before, and the high demand for transportation services means there are plenty of opportunities for drivers to find the right job that meets their needs.
Our Independent Contractors have the flexibility to set their own schedules and get away from the typical 9-5 desk job. By partnering with a reliable carrier like PGT, Owner Operators have access to a strong freight network, customer base and support teams to take their business to the next level. Our next Million Mile Driver spotlight and Independent Contractor, David Morrow, has been in the industry for more than 20 years, and he knows that truck driving is better than it’s ever been.

Meet David Morrow
Ever since he was a teenager, David Morrow has worked long and hard to provide for himself and his family. He’s never shied away from tough jobs, so when David was presented with an opportunity to drive a truck, it was easy for him to say yes. David drove for about 12 years before joining PGT as an Owner Operator, and he’s been a member of our family for over 11 years. This past year, David reached one of our top milestones of driving over a million safe miles. When asked about his secret to success, David only said two words: his mailbox.
Every day, there’s a new bill in the mailbox that needs to be paid, and driving gives David an opportunity to provide for his family and pay those bills. Of course, it’s not all about work – David had fun early in his career and enjoyed seeing different parts of the country. Now that he’s older, David appreciates getting home to his family and having a steady form of income.
David’s advice to new, younger drivers is pretty black and white. “You’re either going to love the job or hate it, so you have to love it,” remarks David. “If you don’t love it, then the job’s not right for you.”
For those drivers who love it, PGT is a great company. David has worked with other trucking companies that ran drivers too hard or didn’t treat drivers with any respect, but at PGT, David has always been happy.
“I’ve never gone a day without a load when I’ve wanted one, I like who I work with and I have good backup support from the main office. You can’t ask for a better trucking job,” says David.
David believes that the trucking industry has greatly improved in the 23 years since he started driving, in part due to the technological advancements and new equipment that’s available. David loves his electronic logging device (ELD) and AI-powered cameras. The ELD makes David be more responsible for his daily production. He knows the clock is ticking on his workable hours, so David plans his stops and breaks accordingly to make the most of his driving time. The forward, rear and side-facing cameras are also a great way to highlight David’s safe driving habits and show what really happens on the road with other motorists.
Truck driving is a solitary profession, and cell phones with hands free communication devices have helped David stay in touch with friends, family and fellow drivers when he’s on the road. David is also a fan of podcasts, and he tries to listen to a variety of channels to stay well-rounded and informed. When he is at home, though, David puts the cell phone down and focuses on the personal interactions.
“I don’t get many opportunities to interact with family face-to-face, so when I’m home or out with friends, I’m one hundred percent invested in that,” notes David.
Of course, cell phones also lead to distracted driving, which is one of the biggest challenges David faces from other motorists during the day. He believes that cell phones, while useful, are the greatest threat to being safe on the road.
“I’m always looking at the left lane to make sure that the other vehicle isn’t about to drift into my lane,” observes David. “From the view up here, I can see when someone is on their phone, which happens a lot.”
Even with the modern changes in the trucking industry, David knows that things need to keep improving in order to provide a better work/life balance for drivers. He’s seen a lot after more than 20 years of driving over the road, and David’s excited for whatever else the future brings to flatbed trucking. Eventually, David plans to retire at PGT as an Owner Operator and spend more time with his family, occasionally getting out to spend time on his boat, but he’s not quite ready for a slower lifestyle just yet.
“I can’t possibly sit still that long,” jokes David.
We’re happy to have David continue his Independent Contractor career at PGT, and we’re proud to be at the forefront of innovation to continue to improve our industry through the Future of FlatbedSM.
Join PGT
PGT has made strategic, innovative partnerships to take advantage of the latest technologies so we can provide a better experience for our drivers. We want our drivers to be safer, to be home more often and to make more money. Enhancing the driver experience will lead to a more efficient and sustainable industry.
Our drivers are the lifeblood of PGT, and we respect the hard work, dedication and sacrifice these men and women do every day. That’s why we offer a competitive compensation for Independent Contractors, with access to incentive programs including discounts on fuel, parts and tires, available health care plans, and more.
When our drivers are successful, PGT is successful. Come join our team of Proud Professionals and take part in the Future of Flatbed.

At PGT Trucking, safety is the driving force behind everything we do. “Safety is Everyone’s Job – All the Time,” and for our drivers, it’s what gets them home to their families each week. We support our drivers by providing them with the resources, tools and knowledge to be safe and reliable flatbed truckers.
Every driver candidate goes through a thorough training and orientation program, and based on their skill level, they may drive with a Certified PRO Trainer before driving by themselves. Even after training, our Safety Managers continually provide coaching to our drivers to improve their overall safety scores. Our drivers have 24/7/365 access to our training team, Fleet Managers and Safety/Risk departments. Whenever a driver has a question about load securement, vehicle safety or equipment, they can contact our team to get the help and answers they need.
We celebrate the safety and success of all our drivers, but a select few have taken safety to the next level. Drivers in our Million Mile and Safe Driver Programs have surpassed our safety goals, including our next driver spotlight, Matthew Kroft.

Meet Matthew Kroft
After years of doing construction in California, Matthew Kroft decided to enter the trucking industry, and in 2010, he packed up his 1989 Chevrolet Blazer and drove to Pennsylvania to complete his PGT orientation as a Company Driver. A million miles later, Matt has experienced a career full of adventure and opportunity. He enjoys seeing different parts of the country (while getting paid for it) and loves that the job is different every day.
Matt believes that trucking is a lifestyle, not just a job, and he knows that flatbed truck driving is an even more specialized role. Thanks to a few years of over the road experience as a van driver, Matt felt it was easier for him to transition to the world of flatbed. He was already comfortable driving a truck, which allowed him to focus on commodity securement and other aspects of flatbed truck driving.
“Trying to learn both driving and flatbedding at the same time would have been difficult,” admits Matt.
For new drivers, Matt encourages them to listen carefully during orientation and to not be afraid to ask questions, even when they’re out on the road. There are always people available to steer them on the right path.
“There are many knowledgeable people at PGT to help you be your best, be safe and be successful,” says Matt. “There’s a lot of good material in orientation about how to be safe and happy while trucking with PGT. Take time to soak it all in.”
Matt knows that safely driving a million miles (and more) isn’t easy, so he focuses on the lessons he learned from his training. He always tries to maintain a “space cushion” in the front, back and both sides of him, and he keeps his view far enough ahead so that he can appropriately adjust his speed based on the situation.
“You have to drive with the idea that others do not see you and anticipate their errors,” explains Matt.
Matt utilizes the five keys of the Smith System, a safe driver training based on precautionary driving measures. At PGT, our trainers are also certified Smith System instructors, and this training is part of our orientation program. Our drivers can’t control the weather or the other motorists around them, but they can anticipate and avoid unsafe situations by following the Smith System.
At PGT, Matt has the support and comradery he needs to be successful in the truck. Matt enjoys connecting with his fellow drivers, whether through group texts, saying hello at truck stops or even getting a friendly wave on the road. Matt also appreciates the communication he has with PGT, not just with his Fleet Manager, but with the corporate office and supporting personnel as well.
“I can call anytime and get someone on the phone to answer my questions or help resolve my problems,” says Matt.
We’re happy to answer Matt’s call, and we will always be here to support Matt and all our drivers. For Matt, hitting the million mile mark is just the beginning.
“My next goal? Another 10 years and another million miles.”
Congratulations, Matt! Here’s to another million!
Join Our Team
Come join the company that utilizes safe practices each and every day! New to flatbed? No problem! PGT will give you the support and resources you need in order to be successful and make it home to your family safely. Your training doesn’t end after orientation. Our drivers have support 24/7/365, with immediate access to their Fleet Managers, Safety/Risk Teams and Training Department, so that every question about load securement and vehicle safety is answered. PGT offers great benefits, including a percentage pay package, health insurance, 401(k) programs and late model equipment.
PGT is committed to safety: “Safety is Everyone’s Job – All the Time,” and our goal is to be the safest and most reliable flatbed carrier in the industry. This starts at the top with our CEO and founder, Pat Gallagher, and applies to every employee, driver and member of the PGT team.

In 2015, PGT Trucking established the Premier Professional Fleet to honor our most elite drivers. These drivers meet our highest performance and safety standards and always maintain an exemplary record. Drivers in our Premier Professional Fleet receive a new truck with the Premier Professional logo, specialized apparel, a recognition plaque and a new pay package. In order to maintain their Premier Professional status, drivers must uphold superior performance levels in safety, revenue, miles per gallon, idle time and compliance, safety and accountability (CSA) scores at all times. We currently have 25 drivers in our Premier Professional Fleet, and these drivers truly are the best of the best at PGT.
Few drivers have the distinguished honor of driving a million miles safely AND being a Premier Professional, but our next Million Mile Driver spotlight, Clifford Heaton, does!

Meet Clifford Heaton
Clifford Heaton started at PGT Trucking as a Company Driver in January 2010, and his professional goal has always been to provide for his family. Cliff and his wife, Donna, have three children and five grandchildren. As an Air Force veteran, Cliff brings discipline and true professionalism to PGT. Cliff takes pride in his job, his performance and his truck, and he knows that he represents PGT in everything he does.
For Cliff, the biggest challenge of being on the road is missing family functions back home, especially the weeknight soccer games, cheerleading competitions and routine activities like dinner and homework. Cliff has learned to truly focus on the time he does spend at home.
“You’re going to miss some games, so enjoy the ones you do make,” says Cliff. “Make the most of the time you are home.”
Cliff knows there’s a balance to driving his truck and managing his home life, and at PGT, he has never had an issue getting home when needed. If there’s a certain event or emergency, Cliff’s Fleet Manager has “bent over backward” at times to make sure Cliff can get home in time.
Cliff states, “PGT has been 100% accommodating in those situations.”
While Cliff’s goal has always been to provide for his family, Cliff has enjoyed his driving career as well. When he first started driving, he loved seeing new parts of the country, and now that he has a more standard route, Cliff appreciates the repetition and discipline that flatbed provides him. He has no plans to stop now.
“Why change something if you’re good at it?” jokes Cliff.
Cliff knows the challenges to drive a million miles safely, especially while maintaining the high standards of our Premier Professional Fleet. His advice for new drivers is to ask questions, always! Eventually a driver will get a new load, something they’ve never seen before, and it’s better to say something or ask for help rather than risk an accident. Cliff believes that drivers should use everything at their disposal, including their Fleet Manager and Safety/Risk teams, and get a second opinion if needed.
“If you’re not comfortable, stop the process,” says Cliff. “Call your Fleet Manager and get Safety/Risk involved. It’s better to let them handle it and know you’re doing the job right.”
Cliff is proud to reach such an impressive milestone, and he hopes he can hit two million safe miles before retiring someday. Ultimately, Cliff’s goals remains the same: “Continue to make it home to my family and provide for them.”

Thank you to Cliff and all of our Premier Professionals for a job well done!,/div>

Drive with Us
Like Cliff, family is at the heart of everything we do. PGT offers flexible home time benefits and vacation packages, and we will devise a schedule that works best for you and your family. There is no one-size-fits-all plan. We know that each situation is unique, and we respect your individual needs.
Making it home to your family is important, and that’s why PGT is committed to safety. All of our drivers go through a training and orientation program, and once they’re on the road, they have 24/7/365 access to our training and safety teams. We also provide routine coaching to ensure our drivers are safe on the road. At PGT, “Safety is Everyone’s Job – All the Time,” and by focusing on safety, we know that our drivers, employees and fellow motorists will all get home to their families.
Come drive for the company that values your family and treats you like a part of their family – join PGT!

At PGT Trucking, we know the value of having good people and good drivers on our team. Our drivers are not just a number on a truck – they’re Proud Professionals who dedicate their lives to keep our economy growing and ensure we have access to the goods we need every day. PGT treats our drivers with respect, and we focus on delivering five core values to our drivers: Pay, Family/Home Time, Equipment, Respect and Support/Training.
Our next Million Mile Driver spotlight is on Mark Amezcua, a veteran driver who proudly represents PGT through one of our top Independent Contractors. For Mark and all of our Owner Operators, we know that in addition to our five core values, they also need independence, opportunity for growth and access to incentive programs. Independent Contractors face unique challenges as owner/operators, but PGT helps our drivers overcome these challenges to be successful. By working with a reputable carrier like PGT, Owner Operators have access to a strong, consistent freight network, a reliable and profitable customer base and unparalleled support, resources and safety programs.
PGT’s Million Mile and Safe Drivers, whether Independent Contractors, Company Drivers or Lease Purchase Drivers, are the safest and most dependable drivers in our fleet, and we’re honored to celebrate their accomplishments at our annual Million Mile and Safe Driver event.

Meet Mark Amezcua
Mark Amezcua started driving with Kitchen Trucking/PGT Trucking in 2009. Mark enjoys sharing his experience and knowledge with others as a road trainer, but he doesn’t claim to know everything. Mark is always asking questions and looking at other drivers’ methods to find ways to improve. So many new drivers are afraid to ask what seems to be a simple or stupid question, but Mark says there are no stupid questions.
“It’s just something that you don’t know yet, so ask,” advises Mark.
Driving a million safe miles isn’t easy, and there are always close calls along the way. According to Mark, one of the biggest challenges of the job is securing each load correctly. Many drivers constantly worry about their load and wonder if it’s loose or if it might shift after a hard brake maneuver. Mark focuses on proper securement from the start so he can worry about his load less and focus on driving more.
“You can never over secure a load,” says Mark. “You need to feel comfortable with what you’re hauling.”
Mark follows DOT and PGT requirements for load securement, but he will add as many extra securement devices as needed until he’s satisfied that the commodity won’t move. Even so, he still completes his trip inspections routinely to double check that nothing has shifted. Mark takes his time to ensure that his truck, trailer and securement devices are in proper working condition so that he and his fellow motorists are safe. By knowing his load is secure, Mark can then focus on safely navigating the other hazards he faces on the road: construction zones, on/off ramps, traffic, other motorists, etc.
Mark is honored to be recognized as a Million Mile Driver, but he simply wants to get through the day safely and take care of others. Mark wishes that other motorists were more aware of their surroundings and more knowledgeable about truck driving in general. Many people don’t even realize when they’re driving in the truck’s blind spot, which can cause challenges for both drivers.
Mark’s advice? “If you can’t see me in my mirrors, then I can’t see you. Just be aware of everything.”
Mark credits his success to taking things one day at a time. When he first started driving, he didn’t even think about reaching a million miles. He just concentrated on making it through the day without incident. One day became two days, two days became a week, a week became a year. Next thing Mark knew, he was at one million miles and counting.
“You can’t look at a full year from the start. It’s a lot of pressure to put on your shoulders. You have to go one day at a time,” says Mark.
Mark appreciates the opportunity to drive and grow with PGT as part of an Independent Contractor fleet. PGT gives Mark the opportunity to be himself, which he self-describes as nice, loud and straight to the point. Mark’s Fleet/Terminal Managers know he will help out in any situation, and more importantly, they know Mark is a true Proud Professional whom they can count on. Mark’s positive attitude and focus on safety make him a standout driver at PGT. In Mark’s spare time, he enjoys kayaking and renovating his house.
When asked about his next goal at PGT, Mark’s response was simple: “Get through the next day.”
We applaud Mark’s dedication to safety, and we’re thrilled to have him on our team of Proud Professionals. Congratulations on a million miles, Mark!
Drive with Us

We value your independence, and with PGT, you’ll have the option of regional runs, no forced dispatch and the ability to be home weekly. One of the top honors for a truck driver is that of Million Mile and Safe Driver. At PGT Trucking, we recognize these drivers every year during a special celebration event in May. Million Mile Drivers have driven over a million miles without a safety incident, and Safe Drivers have over five years of service and less than a million miles driven without a safety incident. These drivers are the safest in the PGT fleet, and this year, we are proud to welcome eight new drivers to the million mile club! These new drivers will join 43 current Million Mile Drivers at PGT: that’s over 51 million miles (and counting) of safe driving.
Three of our new million mile drivers are affiliated with our Owner Operators, a valued and respected division of our PGT fleet. PGT was founded by Pat Gallagher with one tractor and two employees, so we understand the unique needs of our Independent Contractors to start and grow their business. For more than forty years, PGT has focused on providing quality service and building lasting relationships to foster trust, confidence and retention for our drivers. At PGT, Owner Operators maintain their independence while having the support they need to be successful. We have a dedicated team of professionals who are available 24/7/365 to assist our drivers with load securement, vehicle safety and equipment questions, and our Independent Contractors have competitive pay rates and incentive programs to help build their business.
We know that safely driving a million miles is a remarkable accomplishment, and we’re excited to present our Million Mile Driver Spotlight Series. Follow along as we highlight each of our new Million Mile Drivers and learn how they keep us safe every single day, including our first driver spotlight, Independent Contractor Driver Bobby Burlile.

Meet Bobby Burlile
Bobby Burlile has been driving as an Independent Contractor Driver with PGT for seven years. His Terminal Manager, Mike Rowley, states that Bobby is one of his top drivers. Bobby goes above and beyond his job description, and he’s always willing to lend a helping hand to others. So how does Bobby drive a million miles safely?
To Bobby, there’s not much to it: “Just keep the door shut, and stay at it.”
Bobby’s simple approach to getting the job done is really a practice makes perfect mentality. He hauls mostly steel products, and the repetition helps him master proper securement. For Bobby, the biggest challenge is navigating everyday traffic, which is a constantly changing variable. Bobby controls what he can by properly securing his loads, planning out his trips and following all DOT and PGT regulations so that he can focus on his driving.
As a part of an Owner Operator terminal, Bobby appreciates having so many resources available. Through PGT, Bobby has access to 24/7/365 support, quality equipment and maintenance technicians, and a rich and consistent freight base. Bobby can contact his Fleet Manager, Safety and Risk teams at any time to get assistance with load securement, maintenance needs or general safety questions.
Bobby knows that many young drivers will rush to get the job done, but it’s better to be patient and slow down the process, whether they’re driving, securing a load or filling out paperwork. A slow and steady pace will lead to safe habits and success in flatbed trucking.
Bobby advises, “Just be patient with everything.”
For Bobby, the best part of being a truck driver is the freedom that driving provides him. He can set his own schedule and be out on his own without being stuck in an office all day. Bobby is happy just doing his part and making a living, and he knows that he has plenty of opportunities with PGT to be successful through his Independent Contractor. Bobby plans to drive until he’s ready for retirement, and then this proud grandfather of two wants to spend time with his family and hang out on his boat.
Congratulations to Bobby and all of our Million Mile and Safe Drivers! We look forward to celebrating with you!

Flatbed truck driving is a lucrative career, and in 2021, PGT Trucking’s top earning company driver made over $127,000. There are numerous opportunities for drivers, but like with any transportation job, there are risks involved. One of the greatest challenges a flatbed truck driver faces is load securement.

Drivers are expected to properly secure their commodity to ensure the load remains undamaged and doesn’t shift during transport, but it’s just as important for our drivers to avoid personal injury. PGT is committed to safety, and that includes the safety of our drivers. These five practices will help drivers avoid personal injury on the job.

1. Properly secure the commodity and check your load often

Load securement is a key element in flatbed trucking. A properly secured load will not shift in transit, which helps drivers avoid accidents and injury. At PGT, we will provide you with the training, support and equipment you need to be safe and successful on the road. All PGT drivers are equipped with PGT’s load securement guide, which details the proper securement process for a variety of commodities. Our drivers also go through a full training and orientation program, regardless of experience, so that everyone follows PGT standards for safety and quality. PGT specifications go beyond the DOT requirements to ensure that our drivers’ loads do not shift.

Once a driver is on the road, load securement must be checked within the first 50 miles or one hour (whichever comes first), every 150 miles or three hours after (again, whichever comes first), at every change of duty status, and after a hard brake or evasive maneuver. Make sure your cargo has not shifted and retighten your chains/straps if necessary.

PGT drivers are empowered to Stop the Process! Our drivers have 24/7/365 support through our Operations, Safety, Risk, and Training departments and can reach out at any time they do not feel safe, are unsure how to secure a load or have any safety-related issue. When in doubt, Stop the Process, and get the help you need to confirm the commodity is properly secured.

2. Maintain three points of contact to avoid slips, trips and falls

Falling and tripping accounts for 30% of all work-related injuries, with over 50% of those injuries being critical. You can prevent slips, trips and falls by maintaining three points of contact on your truck/trailer any time you are climbing up or down, or maneuvering in a location where a fall is possible. This is especially important during inclement weather when you factor in the additional safety hazards of ice and wet surfaces.

Follow the “Three Point Rule”

The three points of contact system means three of four limbs are in contact with the vehicle at all times. This strategy works by creating a triangle of anchor points, keeping your center of gravity in the middle of the triangle.

  • Example:

    • 2 feet and 1 hand

    • 1 foot and 2 hands

3. Inspect your truck, trailer and equipment routinely

Pre- and post-trip inspections are required daily and every time you drop or hook to a different trailer, and all securement equipment should be inspected monthly. These inspections are an integral part of every road trip for a trucker.

A thorough visual inspection of your truck, trailer, equipment and load will identify any damage or defects and ensure everything is in proper working order. Never use damaged or defective equipment.

4. Wear proper personal protective equipment

As a flatbed truck driver, you will be required to wear PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) during load securement. This includes items such as:

  • Hard Hat

  • Eye Protection

  • Work Gloves

  • High Visibility Clothing or Vest

  • Safety Boots

  • Hearing Protection

Some customers, commodities or facility locations may require additional safety items as needed. PPE is an essential tool for a professional driver, lowering the risk of injury while you work.

5. Take your time

For most truck drivers, they are only paid for the miles they drive, so their time spent securing a load is not compensated. Drivers may rush the process and increase their likelihood of making a mistake, which can result in a serious injury. At PGT, we use a percentage pay package to compensate our drivers, which means our drivers are paid for the entire haul. We want our drivers to focus on safety, not mileage.

Take your time to properly secure the commodity and avoid injury! An extra ten minutes spent during securement will prevent injury and wasted time later on.

PGT Trucking Provides the BEST Driver Training and Orientation

PGT supports our drivers by giving them the training, equipment and resources they need to be successful flatbed truck drivers. Whether you have years of flatbed experience or just got your CDL-A, we will customize our training program to meet your individual needs. We are committed to being one of the safest and most reliable flatbed carriers in the industry.

When you drive for PGT, you’re part of the PGT family. We care about our drivers: we offer an industry-leading percentage pay package, great benefits including medical, dental and vision insurance, and more. If you’re looking for a CDL-A job, come join our team today!

From trip planning and fuel assistance to lifestyle tips and reward points, here is our list of eight applications that will be the most beneficial for our drivers.

You must properly plan out your trip and remain compliant with PGT guidelines and DOT regulations at all times.

1 – Pilot Flying J helps you plan out your route and make the most out of your stops for fuel, supplies and amenities. There are plenty of opportunities to get started.

Now is a Great Time to Start Your Professional Driving Career

Trucking Industry by the Numbers (U.S.)

  • There is a shortage of roughly 80,000 truck drivers.[1]
  • The number of unfilled trucking jobs is expected to double by 2030.[1]
  • The average commercial truck driver in the U.S. is 48 years old.[2]
  • Approximately 72.5% of all freight in the U.S. is moved via truck.[3]

Reasons for the Truck Driver Shortage

  • Aging Workforce: Many current drivers are approaching retirement age, and companies aren’t able to replenish their workforce fast enough.
  • Supply Chain Issues: Increasing demand for products has overwhelmed the capacity of the supply chain and has pressured the transportation industry to solve these logistical issues.
  • Driver Stereotypes: Contrary to popular belief, truck driving is an elite profession made up of men and women who are smart, talented and dedicated. Drivers are routinely drug/alcohol tested, follow strict safety regulations and meet the physical demands of the job.

Why Consider a Flatbed Driving Career with PGT Trucking?

  • Availability of Jobs: With the current truck driver shortage, there are always open positions for professional flatbed drivers, truck technicians and office personnel.
  • High Paying Career: Due to tight capacity, drivers are making more money than ever before. In 2021, first year drivers averaged an astounding $73,000. Top earners brought in over six figures!
  • It’s a Driver’s Market: Candidates can find any type of job to meet their needs, whether that’s local, regional, long haul or specific freight.
  • Rapid Career Growth: Candidates can start as a Company Driver and quickly work their way through our Lease Purchase program, eventually becoming an Independent Contractor with their own fleet.
Truck driving is a lucrative career where people can provide for their families and satisfy a craving for adventure. With industry demands higher than ever before, there are plenty of opportunities to get started. Ditch the 9-5 desk job and take part in this essential industry!
At PGT, we know drivers are our most valuable asset. Our drivers are not just a number on a truck – they’re people with unique interests, needs and backgrounds. Home time and family are important, and we offer multiple opportunities and customized plans for each driver to find what works best for them. We put family first, because at PGT, our drivers are our family. Our drivers have support 24/7/365 through a dedicated team of professionals, many of whom have their own driving experience. We know the job is challenging, but it can be rewarding at the right company.
We provide percentage-based pay for our drivers, which can pay 50% more on the same job than mileage-based pay. Percentage pay means drivers are paid more when freight rates rise, and currently freight rates are at an all-time high. Our drivers know how much they’ll be paid before they even pick up the load, which helps drivers and their families budget accordingly. We also offer industry-leading benefits including healthcare (medical, vision and dental), a 401(k) with 100% company match (up to 5% of gross pay), and more. Truck driving is not just a job; it’s a career!
PGT believes that transparency is the key to retaining great drivers. We practice what we preach, and we treat our drivers with the respect they deserve. PGT’s dedicated team of professionals provide ongoing training, support and resources for our drivers to keep them moving and making money. Our drivers know they can count on PGT to give them the equipment and support they need to successfully complete their runs, and our customers know their loads will be delivered safely, on time and damage-free.
With so many challenges in the trucking industry, PGT is looking to the future for a new approach in solving these issues. We’ve partnered with Locomation and Nikola Corporation to take advantage of new technologies so we can provide a better experience for our customers and our drivers. Human-guided automation and environmentally-friendly vehicles are just the start. Advantages of PGT Trucking

1 – Pay

There is no better time to start your career as a CDL-A flatbed truck driver. Trucking Industry pay has been consistently increasing year after year, and we don’t expect that to stop.

At PGT Trucking, our fleet averages 27% of the line haul revenue. We know that percentage pay beats out mileage pay, which is one of the reasons that PGT leads the industry in driver compensation. Drivers paid by percentage can make 50% more than the same jobs using mileage pay.

In addition to having one of the best pay packages in the industry, PGT offers great benefits. At PGT, our CEO, Pat Gallagher, is on the same health plan as our company drivers. We cover everyone equally, from the top executives down to non-exempt employees. This is because at PGT, you are part of a family.

2 – Family & Home Time

PGT knows the importance of home time and vacation. Professional drivers work hard to support their families, and PGT knows that family comes first. That is why 95% of PGT’s drivers are home weekly.

  • Be there for birthdays.

  • Be there for anniversaries.

  • Be there for the championship game.

PGT supports our drivers and these special moments, and we offer flexible home time packages and vacation benefits to get our drivers home when they need to be.

Our Fleet Managers work with each driver to assess their needs and devise a schedule that ensures those needs are being met. There is no-one-size-fits-all solution. At PGT, you will be treated with respect, and we will work to achieve your goals for your unique situation.

Join a company that puts family first.

3 – Equipment

If you are a flatbed truck driver, you know that you make money when you are on the road. That’s why PGT has some of the best equipment and leading maintenance teams in the industry.

At PGT, we cycle our equipment over a four year period of time. At the end of four years, we complete a full assessment on our equipment. We may choose to offer trucks in our Lease Purchase Program if they have low mileage and are mechanically sound.

We know that in order to recruit and retain the best professional flatbed truck drivers we need to have new equipment, so that’s exactly what we do. Our truck drivers can rely on late model equipment, which helps us achieve the highest level of success and safety.

4 – Respect

“I talk to drivers on a regular basis. Usually, if they have a problem, they call me and I try to put them in touch with the right people. I still have relationships with [drivers] going back to 1981. I think you have to understand the job that they are doing, how difficult the job is and today I have a better understanding of what is required with the professional driver… PGT is like a family because we care.”

  • Pat Gallagher, CEO/Founder, PGT Trucking

PGT is family, plain and simple. You are not a truck number. You are a name, a face, and a valued member of our team.

We know truckers provide essential services to our country, undergo extensive training, and work hard to provide a good lifestyle for their families. They deserve to be treated fairly.

At PGT, what we say and what we do are one in the same. We do not say one thing to get drivers in the door and then do another once they are here. Transparency is KEY to showing drivers respect.

Our experienced management team respects your time and works with reliable customers to ensure you are moving and making money. Your safety is a priority each and every day.

5 – Support & Training

PGT offers extensive training and support for our truck drivers. Even if you are a flatbed truck driver with 20 years of experience, we want to make sure you have the knowledge and tools to be successful at PGT.

Each and every driver will receive a customized training program. Our training program gets you behind the wheel and on the road with one of our Certified PRO Trainers. Our instructors are experienced CDL drivers with over 100 years of combined experience.

At PGT, we believe in “practicing what you preach.” Each week, PGT staff from the Operations, Maintenance, Compliance/Safety/Risk, Sales, Recruiting, and Load Center Departments head to the Blairsville training facility to take part in a two-day training program, learning the fundamentals of load securement, both in the classroom and hands-on in the warehouse. To properly support our drivers, this training helps corporate staff members gain a better understanding of what our Proud Professionals encounter on the road each day. Our drivers have support 24/7/365.

If you are looking to build experience in the flatbed trucking industry, you won’t get better training, orientation, and ongoing support than what we offer at PGT.

Cole Welham, General Manager, Liedtka Logistics; Carol Walla, Site Manager, Gary; Sebastian Wagner, Fleet Manager; and Katie Rousseau, Assistant Breakdown Manager took part in our Flatbed 101 training in Blairsville, PA.

“This training was extremely beneficial! You hear about what the drivers do each day, but as an office staff member, you do not realize all that they have to go through to secure the commodity on their trailer. I believe everyone should take part in Flatbed 101 to experience what a driver encounters out on the road. I appreciate our drivers so much more after this experience!” – Katie Rousseau

Drive for PGT Trucking

At PGT, we offer the best pay, equipment, and training and support to set you up for success. We treat our drivers as family and respect the time, effort, and commitment they put in to make PGT the industry leader. Come join our team today!

Eating Healthy on the Road: A Guide for Truck Drivers

It is a huge challenge for truck drivers to stick to a healthy diet while on the road and away from home. You don’t have access to a full kitchen and it can be difficult to find healthy options and dining locations that can accommodate truck parking. It is both tempting and convenient to eat fast food for all three meals throughout your day.

Reality is, obesity is a national crisis, and these numbers double within the trucking industry. According to the CDC truckers are twice as likely to be obese as compared to other U.S. workers. Seven out of 10 long-haul truck drivers are classified as obese.

Healthy options are available, but it is up to the driver to make the change. Today, truck stops carry fresh fruit, nuts and salads, and many fast food restaurants now offer healthy menu options. Take time on the weekend, while you are home, to stock your truck with healthy foods and snacks for the week ahead.

Plan for success

Having a healthy eating plan is the single most important decision you can make. Sticking to a plan will help to give you the willpower you need to avoid unhealthy choices. Once you start seeing progress, it will motivate you to continue.

  • Research meal options from fast food restaurants that are healthier.

  • Make a list of meals and snacks that you can refer to when you are grocery shopping for the week.

  • Stock your truck with healthy snack options and plenty of water.

What should you eat?

Focus on whole foods with very little processing and few ingredients.

  • Processed foods are calorically dense. That means they have a lot of calories in them in a relatively small amount of food, so you will have to eat more of them to feel full. Consider that an average apple is 95 calories and a snickers bar is 250 calories and you can see that you could eat 2 apples instead of one snickers bar and still be ahead by 60 calories.

  • Processed foods are designed to be addictive. Your body is hardwired to want sugar and fat because historically this was a useful trait to survive times of famine. Our bodies aren’t designed for this age of cheap, dense calories! This leads to compulsive, mindless eating and over consumption.

  • Whole foods have higher satiety, meaning you will feel more full after you eat them.

Stay hydrated

Healthy options at the truck stop

  • Beef Jerky – This convenience store staple is an excellent source of protein.

  • Tuna – Canned fish is always available and makes a high quality meal or snack. Tuna is high in omega-3 fatty acids which have been shown to support heart health.

  • On the go salads – Salads are a great choice and often include hard boiled eggs or lean chicken breast to make it a meal. Be careful, read the nutrition label of any included salad dressing. It’s pretty easy to turn a salad into a high calorie meal with the wrong dressing.

  • Cottage Cheese

  • Hard boiled Eggs

  • Pickles

  • Sparking Water – A sparkling beverage can help scratch that soda itch and is a great way to avoid the temptation of buying an energy drink.

  • Low-fat Greek Yogurt

  • Hummus and Vegetables

  • Low-fat string cheese

  • Lightly salted mixed nuts

Healthy options at fast food restaurants

  • Don’t drink your calories – Avoid sugary drinks

  • Avoid anything deep fried, such as french fries or fried chicken

  • If you choose a salad don’t add a lot of high fat items to it such as creamy dressings, bacon bits, and shredded cheese. Those extra calories can add up very quickly. You can easily consume over 1000 calories eating a salad!

  • Choose veggies, fruit, a baked potato (hold the sour cream), or yogurt for your meal side

  • Say no to larger sized meals when ordering a combo

  • Limit your fast food visits. Consider a fast food visit to be a special treat.

Remember, your long term success is built on a foundation of making the right choice most of the time, not being perfect.

Winter Driving Safety Tips for Truck Drivers

PGT Trucking’s commitment to safety is part of our corporate culture and allows us to remain one of the safest flatbed carriers in the industry. PGT provides driver orientation and training to new hires and supports its drivers as they safely transport their payloads. All drivers are assigned a Safe Operations Manager who can provide them assistance and guidance throughout their day. Additionally, drivers can reach out to their Fleet Manager for any questions or concerns. Winter driving brings special considerations to safety due to the increased chance of rapidly changing weather and declining road conditions.

Winter Weather Safety

While drivers spend the majority of their work time behind the wheel, being careful outside of the truck is very important.

  • Wear proper footwear with good traction to help navigate the snow and ice.

  • Make sure you are using three points of contact when entering and exiting the cab of your truck and when climbing on and off the trailer.

  • Be mindful of slippery conditions in parking lots and terminals.

  • Dress appropriately for the conditions and carry extra warm clothing and outerwear.

Maintain your truck in cold weather conditions

  • Carry at least 1 bottle of anti-gel and antifreeze in your truck at all times.

  • When parking a unit for more than 12hrs, please execute the following:

1. If it is 21 degrees or warmer – Normal weekend procedures.

2. If it is between 11-20 degrees – Truck must be plugged in and started every 24hrs. Run the tractor for 30-45 minutes, then shut down.

3. If it is 10 degrees or colder – Truck must be plugged in and started every 12hrs. Run the tractor for 30-45 minutes, then shut down.

  • When the temperature has the potential to dip below 20 degrees, anti-gel must be added to the fuel:

1. Artic Flo anti-gel bottles can be obtained at any PGT shop or PGT authorized facility.

2. PGT trucks need one 16-ounce bottle of Artic FLo per tank added prior to filling up. For other brands of anti-gel, please read the label.

  • Check coolant systems daily to ensure the correct amount of antifreeze is present.

Winter Road Conditions

Route Planning

  • Know the weather conditions across your entire route.

  • Determine if you can safely meet expected pick-up and delivery requirements.

  • Allow extra time if you believe the weather may delay your transit.

  • If you do not feel safe in the current weather environment – don’t go! But, immediately notify your Fleet Manager.

Driving

Key 1. Aim High In Steering®

Key 2. Get The Big Picture®

Key 3. Keep Your Eyes Moving®

Key 4. Leave Yourself An Out®

Key 5. Make Sure They See You®

  • Snow, Slush and Ice Covered Roads

    1. Be aware that traction is decreased and stopping distance is increased.

    2. Reduce your speed to ⅔ of the speed limit or lower.

    3. Use slow, deliberate, and methodical movements, especially when braking and accelerating.

    4. Do not use cruise control.

    5. Double your follow distance to 15 to 20 seconds.

    6. Ice is not always visible, so use these tips to help determine when the roads are icy:

      1. If the temperature is below freezing and the roads appear wet, there is a high likelihood of ice.

      2. If the road looks wet, but you don’t see any spray coming off the tires of the vehicles around you, then the roads are most likely frozen and icy.

      3. If ice starts to form on the back of your mirrors, then the road is freezing over too.

    7. If you are concerned that the conditions are too dangerous to continue, call your Fleet Manager and stop the truck at the next safe location.

Parking

  • When not parking at a PGT company terminal or other approved agent terminal, the truck must be placed in a safe location approved by your Fleet Manager.

    1. Leave yourself an out so that you do not get snowed in or plowed in

    2. Packed snow on the shoulder may appear to be solid and part of the roadway, but it could be a false shoulder, placing you in danger.

    3. Only park on solid, stable sites that you have confirmed are safe.

    4. Only park where you are authorized to do so.

  • If in danger of being stuck, contact your Fleet Manager.

PGT Trucking’s ongoing commitment to safety helps ensure we maintain our reputation as one of the safest trucking companies for all employees. Apply now!

Avoid Truck Stop Damage https://www.pgttrucking.com/avoid-truck-stop-damage/ Wed, 29 Dec 2021 17:20:00 +0000 https://pgttrucking1.wpengine.com/?p=8612 To most truck drivers out on the road, seeing a truck stop is like a breath of fresh air. Our Top 8 Tips To Keep Your Truck Safe At Truck Stops

To most truck drivers out on the road, seeing a truck stop is like a breath of fresh air after a long day. Truck stops give drivers a chance to relax, refuel, get some rest, stretch their legs, clean up, and get some food.

A truck stop is also a place one could incur damage to their vehicle if you don’t take proactive measures.

8 Tips for flatbed truck drivers to keep your truck safe

1. Pick long-term neighbors

The easiest way for truck drivers to avoid damage to their trucks is to pick good neighbors. If truck drivers seem to be settled in for the night or at least seem to be staying in one place for awhile, parking between them is your best bet.

2. Look for natural blockers

By avoiding possible accident areas and choosing natural blockers, truck drivers can help protect their vehicles. This is why parking next to stationary objects may be the best option when searching for the right spot. In addition, parking next to poles or guardrails can provide a natural barrier between trucks so that the risk of an accident is much lower.

While it can be challenging to control parking neighbors, finding a curb to park beside can give truck drivers a feeling of safety and only require them to focus on one neighbor instead of two.

3. Avoid high-traffic areas

One of the best practices to avoid accidents is to purposely avoid high traffic areas. When approaching a truck stop, truck drivers need to assess their surroundings to determine where the highest and lowest volume of truck traffic will be to help prevent potential damage. Try to park away from spots close to food, shops, or other public buildings, and avoid the path to enter and exit the truck stop itself. When in doubt, park in the very back end of the lot. Most of the traffic occurs in the front third of the lot closest to the buildings.

4. Don’t abuse fuel islands

Many truck drivers make the mistake of stopping for fuel and, when done, decide to take their break right then and there. Abusing fuel islands can irritate other drivers since fuel islands tend to be one of the most popular areas at truck stops. This is why it’s best to stay there only as long as you need to. Make sure to move from the fuel island as soon as possible and choose a spot away from traffic.

5. Utilize your dashcams

While precautions can be taken to avoid damage and hit-and-runs, sometimes these things can still happen. There is only so much a truck driver can do to prevent accidents. However, having a dashcam can help hold the responsible party accountable or, at the very least, have evidence that the damage was not the truck driver’s fault.

6. Take note of your neighbors

It’s not a bad idea to note who is parked beside you, just in case. You can take a quick photo with your phone of the company name, license plate, and unit number of your neighbors.

7. Take a moment before refueling

Stop before you pull into the fuel bay and ensure the area is clear and that your trailer is lined up. This is the time to check the canopy height if you have an overheight load before driving beneath it. While you are refueling, this is an excellent opportunity to do a quick visual inspection of your truck.

Before leaving the fuel island, take a quick mental note of the turning points so that you can avoid clipping the fuel pump. Your trailer should clear the fuel area before you turn.

8. Be mindful of time

If possible, settle down sooner rather than later, especially if it is an overnight stay. Proper trip planning may allow you to park early in the day and allows the driver to have their pick of the lot since they’ll have the ability to see the truck stop’s layout and plan accordingly. Trying to park too late in the evening can leave a driver with limited options, and the spots that minimize damage will likely already be gone.

Conclusion

Truck stops were designed to be a resting place for all truck drivers, and with the rise of ecommerce and the need to move more goods, the number of vehicles that need to use these areas has only increased. Unfortunately, this also means that the dangers of vehicle damage have also risen. Safety is always the number one priority in any industry and that is no different for trucking.

10 tools for the flatbed truck driver

As a flatbed truck driver, you aren’t expected to be a mechanic; however, having some tools on hand in an emergency situation can save you from a lot of headaches. There are many easy repairs that you can make to save critical time you would otherwise spend waiting for emergency maintenance.

Whether you’re a brand-new driver or an experienced professional, knowing what tools to have can make the difference. We’ve put together our top 10 must-have truck driving tools to keep in your vehicle.

small toolbox

1. Small Toolbox

Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best solutions. Making sure that a small toolbox full of a variety of tools is always reachable in your truck can save you from many issues! Small tool boxes cost around $28.00 on average, depending on what tools you consider essential to your job and how much storage space you have in your truck.

duct tape

2. Duct Tape

Duct tape has strength, flexibility, and excellent adhesion to a variety of surfaces. Duct tape can be found at any local hardware or grocery store. It can usually run around $3.00 for standard duct tape and $6.99 and up for more premium duct tapes, like Gorilla. It can be useful for small, temporary patches on tarps, until you can stop and repair it properly with a tarp repair kit.

gloves

3. Gloves

Not only will gloves provide warmth to a truck driver’s hands when securing loads outside in winter weather, but is also a critical PPE item at many customer locations. There are many options for what kind of gloves to purchase, such as canvas gloves, leather gloves, or winter gloves, depending on the location and what your job entails.

Leather gloves can run about $12.00 and are helpful when refueling, checking the oil or the truck belts. Canvas gloves cost a little less.

pliers

4. Pliers

Having a wide selection of tools at the ready can make a truck driver’s life a lot easier. However, if you’re not keen on carrying around an entire toolbox, you might want to consider having individual tools in your glovebox instead. Pliers can be a great multi-purpose tool to keep around the truck. High-quality pliers will run about $18.88 and can be found online or at your local hardware store.

flashlight

5. Flashlights

Whether checking the truck tires or doing a pre- or post-trip inspection of the truck, a flashlight is always a necessity. It’s best to have both a large and small flashlight, whether you need to check a small space, run out of power, or need to investigate your truck at night. We like LED flashlights, many of which you can recharge with a simple USB cable right in your truck. Small flashlights can cost around $7.00, and a large rechargeable flashlight will run you about $25.

zip ties

6. Zip Ties

Zip ties will allow you to bundle things together, such as wires or other items. You can buy zip ties in a variety of colors to create simple organization systems. Like duct tape, zip ties are a versatile solution for a variety of problems you may encounter.

tire pressure gauge

7. Tire Pressure Gauge

Ensuring that a truck’s tires are kept at the correct air pressure can save a lot of money on fuel, but, more importantly, they are critical for truck driving safety. Tire pressure gauges tend to be inexpensive and are widely available at your local big box stores for $6 to $8.

Bungee Cords

8. Bungee Cords

As a flatbed truck driver you can find 100 uses for bungee cords such as securing things in your cab, securing the toolbox doors, hanging clothing to dry, and many others. A 5 pack will set you back around $20 or more depending on the length and its strength rating.

first aid kit

9. First Aid Kit

A well stocked first aid kit is a necessity. If you get cut or hurt on the road, you want to make sure you have proper bandages and antibiotic ointments to avoid a serious infection. You can put a basic first aid kit together yourself in a gallon ziplock bag at your local big box store for just a few dollars or purchase a pre-stocked kit for about $20.

Hammer

10. Hammer

Hammers can be used in colder climates to release frozen brakes or knock ice off of padlocks, along with a lot of other general uses for truck maintenance. You should not require anything fancy – you can purchase a hammer for $4.99 at your local hardware store.

Conclusion

Being prepared for any situation on the road is what helps keep you safe and efficient. Finding a local flatbed truck driving job can be rewarding, but knowing what to bring and what situations may occur during a typical trip can save a lot of time and help you avoid stress.

The Transportation Industry – an Opportunity for Women

Many jobs are available in the trucking industry. With the demand for moving freight continuing to rise, tenured drivers retiring, and a decrease in job applications, this is the perfect time to consider a job at PGT Trucking. Opportunities are available for both flatbed truck drivers and supporting positions.

Why Become a Truck Driver?

  • Regardless of the state of the U.S. economy, we will always be relied on to deliver goods to their destination. Truck driving is an essential service and that ensures job security.

  • The prerequisites to become a flatbed truck driver include a high school diploma and a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A. No college degree is needed. So, whether you are a recent high school graduate or just looking for a new career opportunity, this could be the option for you.

  • The trucking industry offers some of the highest-paid positions that do not have college degree requirements. First year truck drivers earned an average salary of $47,130 in 2020, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Additional benefits like health insurance, paid vacation time and retirement plans are offered by fleets to their company drivers.

  • While truck driving has been a male-dominated occupation, many companies are actively recruiting women to join their teams. Truck driving is a career path that rewards equal pay for equal work, and one can expect appropriate compensation, regardless of gender.

  • While you are often on your own while behind the wheel, you have an entire team supporting you. Whether you have technical issues with your truck or need rerouting assistance due to road conditions, you are a phone call away from individuals ready to assist you.

  • Depending on the company you join, you can choose to drive locally and be home every night or become a regional or over-the-road truck driver. Whether you need to stay close because of family commitments or have a desire to travel and see new sights, you can make truck driving work for you.

  • Becoming a part of the transportation industry offers you a wide-open career path, allowing you to grow in the direction that you want to. Your First Year as a New Truck Driver (What to Expect)

See: “Wanted: 80,000 truck drivers to help fix the supply chain

There is no doubt about it: Truck drivers are highly sought-after!

How much can I expect to make as a company flatbed driver?

PGT Trucking pays a percentage of every load a driver hauls, and as carriers are charging more for critical services, our company flatbed drivers are reaping the benefits.

Nationally, Heavy and Tractor-trailer truck drivers earned an average salary of $47,130 in 2020, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

PGT trucking flatbed company drivers with one year of tenure, making a minimum of 25% of the line haul, did much better than the industry averages.

In 2020 PGT 1st Year Drivers earned 21% more than the industry average!

Your first year as a truck driver

To prepare you for the road ahead, we’ve outlined what you can expect from your first year as a flatbed company driver. This guidance is based on our 40 years of experience in the flatbed transportation industry.

You will receive mentoring from an expert driver

After completing your initial orientation, most flatbed trucking companies will assign a seasoned driver to be your trainer on the road. This is an opportunity for you to learn from someone who knows the flatbed industry, the customers, and the best practices that will lead to your success at your flatbed trucking job.

While sharing your rig with another person for days on end will not be without its challenges, it is a phenomenal learning experience. Take this opportunity to ask questions and work on your driving skills under the guidance of a seasoned professional driver.

You’ll need to learn how to budget on the road

  • Reduce the frequency of buying fast food and eating at restaurants. Pack a cooler and prepare your own meals instead.

  • Inquire about CDL-A discounts for food and lodging.

  • Set and track your monthly food and travel budget on your phone.

  • Stock up on toiletries and essentials before hitting the road.

  • Avoid buying excessive amounts of sodas or expensive coffee products.

There Will Be a Learning Curve

Accept that you will make mistakes in your first year. Whether it’s taking you too long to maneuver your equipment into a space or misunderstanding delivery instructions, you need to understand that these mistakes can happen. It’s important to remain humble, own your mistakes, and view each incident as an opportunity to learn.

You’ll Need To Be a Self Starter

After earning your CDL-A, you still need to earn your reputation as a dependable driver in the business. In your first year, you’re going to want to spend as much time in the seat as possible, as each assignment is an opportunity to improve. To prove that you’re reliable, you’ll need to show your customers and flatbed trucking company that you can:

  • Deliver and pick up your loads on time;

  • Maneuver, operate, and maintain your truck;

  • Effectively communicate with your dispatchers.

Adjust to Life on the Road

Stay in Touch. Keeping in touch with friends and family is essential to maintaining a positive and motivated attitude on the road. With Bluetooth technology and free Wi-Fi at most truck stops, a quick video call with a loved one can be just what you need to get through the last leg of a long journey.

Focus on Your Health. Being a flatbed company driver is both mentally and physically demanding. To ensure your safety and mental clarity on the road, you’ll want to stay healthy.

Remember to:

  • Stay hydrated and refill your water at every stop.

  • Eat a healthy diet to feel nourished, instead of sluggish after a meal.

  • Get a minimum of 7 hours of sleep.

  • Take a brisk 15-minute walk twice a day.

  • Work on your posture. Avoid slouching and adjust yourself in your seat every 30 minutes to relieve your spine.

PGT Trucking Celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month

Every year, from September 15 to October 15, the U.S. observes National Hispanic Heritage Month to celebrate the history, culture and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. As we wrap up the month, take some time to focus on the Hispanic community and the growing diversity within the trucking industry. We are a nation that was established on multiculturalism and diversity, and these remain core parts of the American ideal.

The trucking industry has seen a massive spike in demand for their services and it is more vital to the U.S. economy than ever before. Since the onset of the pandemic, consumers have made a massive shift away from brick and mortar stores to ecommerce. Total online spending hit $82.5 billion in May 2020, which was a staggering 70% rise over data collected from 2019. It is estimated that ecommerce saw an accelerated growth equivalent to 4 to 6 years under the previous circumstances. At the same time this demand is increasing, as is the demand for professional truck drivers. Trucking is facing shortages of an estimated 60,000 drivers, which many experts fear will quadruple by 2025.

Truck Driving jobs are entering a time of unprecedented opportunity as the demand is increasing and will continue through peak season.

The trucking industry serves some of the leading sectors for Hispanic employment. By 2030, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects Hispanics to account for 1 out of every 5 workers in the labor force, and within the transportation industry where currently Hispanics represent about 14.6% of the U.S. truck drivers.

Diversity and inclusion are essential to PGT’s continued growth in recruiting and retaining the industry’s best drivers. At PGT Trucking, 15% of our employees and 11% of our drivers are Hispanic and this number is on the rise! Our Hispanic Initiative is important to growing cultural awareness across the company. Each Wednesday, Luis Guzman Sr., PGT Recruiter, hosts a Spanish class for PGT employees, both virtually and in-person, to learn how to communicate and comprehend the Spanish language. We proudly offer these fun and educational opportunities to all of our employees!

Additionally, to help celebrate the month, PGT’s Laredo, TX, terminal hosted “Taco Tuesday,” welcoming our drivers and staff to the office for a National Hispanic Heritage Month luncheon. Sergio Villarreal, Manager USA/Mexico Operations, and his team organized this great event for PGT employees.

This year, National Truck Driver Appreciation Week is September 12-18, 2021.

It is more important than ever to show respect for professional truck drivers, who have always played a critical role in our economy. During the COVID-19 pandemic, professional truck drivers stepped up to the plate. They have helped keep the economy moving, despite facing unprecedented obstacles.

  • Truck drivers deliver 10 billion tons of freight every year

  • 70% of all freight moving in the U.S. is by truck

  • 80% of U.S. communities rely 100% on trucking to deliver goods

Every day, 3.6 million professional truck drivers get behind the wheel and head out onto our highways to deliver the clothes we wear, medical supplies, our food, gasoline, and countless other items that keep our society moving forward.

Please take a moment during National Truck Driver Appreciation Week to say thank you and recognize the truck drivers in your community.

Truck driving is a tough job. Drivers don’t always get to go home at the end of the day, with many of them living in their trucks until the job is done. National Truck Driver Appreciation Week gives us the opportunity to show our gratitude for all that these drivers do!

Saying thank you is a simple gesture, but it’s one that means so much.

Thank you, Truck Drivers, for all that you do!

Please accept a grateful “Thank You” from all of us behind the scenes at PGT Trucking; you are truly appreciated.

Percentage Pay Guide for Truck Drivers https://www.pgttrucking.com/percentage-pay-guide-for-truck-drivers/ Sat, 04 Sep 2021 17:34:00 +0000 https://pgttrucking1.wpengine.com/?p=8636 Here at PGT Trucking, we pride ourselves on a transparent, fair pay system, and PGT drivers know what their pay will be for each load, every time one is assigned.

The post Percentage Pay Guide for Truck Drivers appeared first on PGT Trucking.

YOUR GUIDE FOR PERCENTAGE PAY TRUCK DRIVING JOBS

Here at PGT Trucking, we feel strongly that the percentage pay model is the most beneficial way to pay drivers. The majority of PGT Trucking company fleet averages 27% of the line haul revenue!

We pride ourselves on a transparent, fair pay system, and PGT drivers know what their pay will be for each load, every time one is assigned.

Percentage Pay vs Mileage Pay

  • Percentage Pay lets you make MORE money when freight rates are upWith Percentage Pay, drivers make a consistent percentage of the freight cost, and with the overwhelming demand for professional truck drivers, shipping rates are projected to continue to rise. Also, trucking jobs that pay by percentage allow you to take advantage of seasonal upswings in the market, like the holiday season. You will get paid more when your carrier gets paid more. Mileage Pay will pay you the same cents per mile year-round, even when the carrier is charging customers more.
  • With Percentage Pay truck driving jobs, drivers know how much they are getting paid before they pick up the loadWith mileage pay, your truck’s Electronic Logging Device (ELD) will record the actual miles you have driven. But, if the dispatcher has only allowed for you to be paid by the short miles (shortest distance along the necessary route), you may not be paid for the actual, practical miles you drove in order to take the fastest route. When your GPS asks you “Shortest route or Fastest Route,” which do you choose? You don’t want the scenic route, you want the highway! The same applies to flatbed trucking jobs.
  • Percentage Pay has the most potential for income growthFlatbed trucking jobs with Percentage Pay have higher potential for income growth because carriers will be charging customers more each year for the same trips and you will also receive that benefit. With a Mileage Pay job, your cents per mile rate may only increase by one cent or so per year.
  • With Percentage Pay you know you are getting paid fairlyWith Mileage Pay, you know your cents per mile rate and the number of miles you have driven, but will the company give you credit for the full miles or only their “short miles” allowance? If there’s a big difference between your actual miles and the allowed miles, you will not be making as much as you expected!

Trucking jobs with Percentage Pay give you full transparency and you know that your pay is accurate, as long as your company shares with you the rated Bill of Lading.

  • With Percentage Pay you get paid more for valuable loads. With Percentage Pay you will earn more if the truck earns more. If you are involved with a time sensitive delivery, for example, that delivery cost will also be higher. When you are paid by the percentage, if the rates increase then your pay increases.
Highest Paying percentage pay trucking company

PGT Trucking is committed to treating its drivers with integrity, just as we honor your hard-work and dedication to the job. We are invested in maintaining high-quality, safe flatbed transportation services and we want to develop, retain, and reward quality employees. Our Percentage Pay program will reward you, our dedicated driver.

Top 3 Benefits of Percentage Pay https://www.pgttrucking.com/top-3-benefits-of-percentage-pay/ Mon, 01 Feb 2021 17:39:00 +0000 https://pgttrucking1.wpengine.com/?p=8642 For typical over-the-road drivers or owner/operators, the two most common methods are either mileage pay, or percentage pay. So what’s the difference?

The post Top 3 Benefits of Percentage Pay appeared first on PGT Trucking.

]]>

How would you prefer to be paid? Higher of course; but that question was rhetorical. For typical over-the-road drivers or owner/operators, the two most common methods are either mileage pay, or percentage pay.

So what’s the difference? Consider this example:

A customer needs a commodity hauled 1,236 miles and will pay $2,900 for the load to be moved.

  • Mileage Pay is simply what it implies. You are paid a certain dollar amount per mile that you drive. For example, if you are paid 56 cents per mile and you drive 1,236 miles, your pay would look like this:

.56 cents x 1236 miles = $692

  • Percentage Pay is based off a percentage the shipper paid to haul their load. Using the example above, if your percentage is 28% and the shipper paid $2,900 dollars for the load, your pay would look like:

$2,900 x .28 = $812

Now that you know the difference, let’s dive into the Top 3 Benefits of Percentage Pay.

1. No More Mileage Disputes

Whether you’re a new driver or an experienced one, the last thing you want to do is dispute with your employer over whether or not your miles and compensation are fair. Percentage pay is a more transparent, fair pay system. If the owner/operator happens to be one of those who drive excessive extra distances to use their favorite roads, the company doesn’t have to pay for these inefficiencies. As well, periodically, a load paying full freight won’t use up the whole trailer. A percentage paid driver is more likely to be agreeable to the time spent filling the trailer, because more of the additional revenue goes to him.

2. Rates Are Increasing

Based on the industry’s current freight rates, company drivers average approximately $55,000 per year at the starting rate of 25% of the line haul revenue. The percentage pay rate amount for a driver increases, based on tenure and experience with a company. In addition, with the overwhelming demand for professional drivers, shipping rates are projected to continue to increase. According to the October 2017 Kiplinger Report, forecasted trucking rates will grow 5% – 10% in 2018.

3. Statistics Show – Percentage Drivers Are Happier

Truck drivers who receive pay based on a percentage split — a fixed percent of the invoice charged to customers — are generally more satisfied with their jobs than those who are paid based on hourly or mileage pay, according to survey results released by Stay Metrics.

Stay Metrics surveyed more than 4,000 drivers from 31 different carriers.

Drivers receive pay on a percentage split indicated they were 31% more satisfied with their jobs than those who receive hourly pay and 29% more satisfied than those who receive per-mile pay.

In the survey, drivers who receive hourly and per-mile pay said they felt underpaid compared to the responses of drivers who are paid on a percentage split.

PGT Trucking stands firmly behind our pay program, as we feel this is the best way to reward our dedicated drivers. Apply now and find out more!
